Chapter 10 - The Sect’s Shadow

The valley was alive with voices. From the ridge, Long Chen descended into a town pressed against the Azure Cloud Sect's outer gates. It was no ordinary settlement—Aspire Town, known as the gathering place for all who dreamed of entering the sect.

Its streets were lined with stalls selling talismans, pills, and spirit beast hides. Hawkers shouted loudly:

"Spirit-enhancing talismans! One silver each!"

"Qi recovery pills! Restore energy instantly!"

"Registration papers for the Azure Cloud Sect trials!"

Long Chen's golden eyes swept across the crowd. Cultivators in plain robes mingled with hopeful mortals, their faces filled with equal parts excitement and fear.

At a teahouse near the plaza, a group of youths whispered loudly, their voices carrying.

"I heard this year's test will be harsher. They say the Azure Cloud Sect lost face recently."

"Lost face? How?"

"Three disciples were beaten by some rogue brat in a backwater village. They limped home in shame. Now the elders want to tighten the trials."

Long Chen paused at the threshold. His lips curved faintly. So word spread that quickly.

He entered the teahouse quietly, choosing a corner seat. A server approached nervously, placing tea before him.

As he sipped, the door opened. A young man in coarse linen walked in, his back straight despite his plain clothes. His aura was faint but steady, and his eyes carried a sharpness that reminded Long Chen of tempered steel.

Behind him trailed a girl, perhaps sixteen, carrying a basket of herbs. Her features were ordinary, but her presence calm, soothing like flowing water.

They sat near Long Chen. After a moment, the youth leaned over.

"You're here for the Azure Cloud Sect trials too?"

Long Chen nodded slightly.

The youth smiled. "Name's Zhang Mu. That's my sister, Zhang Wei. We came from Green River Village. You?"

Long Chen placed his cup down, voice calm. "Long Chen."

The girl blinked at the name, then lowered her gaze, muttering softly, "A strong name…"

Their conversation was cut short by laughter. A group of richly dressed youths strode in, their Azure-blue robes marked with embroidered clouds. Outer disciples of the sect.

Their leader sneered at the gathered hopefuls. "Trash from villages and slums, dreaming of becoming disciples? Don't make me laugh."

He cast his gaze around, then stopped when it fell on Long Chen. His eyes narrowed.

"You. Stand up."

The hall quieted. All eyes turned to Long Chen.

Long Chen lifted his teacup slowly, sipping, unbothered. "Why?"

The youth's face twisted. "Because I said so. In front of Azure Cloud disciples, you kneel. That's the rule."

Zhang Mu tensed, hand inching toward the dagger at his waist. His sister grabbed his sleeve, fear flashing in her eyes.

The disciple smirked. "Or perhaps you're the brat who shamed my juniors weeks ago. I'd enjoy cutting you down here."

Long Chen finally set his cup down. His golden gaze pierced the arrogant youth, sharp as a blade.

"Rules?" His voice was quiet, but carried weight. "The only rule I follow… is my own."

The hall trembled as silence thickened. The disciple's hand twitched toward his sword.

But before steel could flash, a stern voice rang out:

"Enough."

An elder of the sect had entered, his aura like a mountain. All disciples bowed instantly, fear in their eyes.

The elder's gaze swept the hall, lingering briefly on Long Chen. For an instant, his brow furrowed—as if sensing something unfathomable.

"Save your arrogance for the trial tomorrow. If you can't even pass the outer gate, you're not worthy of Azure Cloud Sect."

The disciples paled, bowing deeply. "Yes, Elder!"

With a wave of his sleeve, the elder left. The hall breathed again.

The arrogant disciple glared at Long Chen one last time, hatred etched into his face. "Tomorrow, the trial will decide. Don't die too quickly, brat."

They stormed out.

Zhang Mu exhaled shakily. "You didn't even flinch. Do you not fear offending them?"

Long Chen stood, tying his blade strap tighter. "Fear? No. A dragon doesn't bow to chickens."

Zhang Mu stared, then grinned. "Then tomorrow, let's see who soars highest."

The healer girl, Zhang Wei, looked at Long Chen quietly, her eyes soft yet unreadable.

Long Chen walked into the night. The town glowed with lanterns, the mountain looming above like a sleeping dragon.

Tomorrow, I step into the sect. Not as a servant. Not as prey. But as the storm that changes it.
