The battle was over.
Across Deccounia, the guns finally went quiet. Smoke still rose from the jungle, desert, and mountain fronts, but the demon army had retreated beyond Imperial reach. The soldiers who survived began returning to the capital, to forward bases, and to military stations scattered across the galaxy.
The Empire had taken damage.
But it had held.
For the first time in a long while, the people of Tenrihines saw what happened when a true demon army marched toward the capital, and watched the military, the STF, and the Greats push it back.
That mattered.
But inside STF Headquarters, Ian wasn't celebrating.
He stood in his office, staring over reports from every front. Losses. Damages. Enemy movements. Recovered weapons. Witness accounts. Razor's retreat.
Optimus stood across from him, arms crossed, his usual energy quieter than normal.
Ian finally spoke.
"From the looks of it, Razor wasn't just trying to win."
Optimus looked up. "What do you mean?"
Ian tapped one of the reports. "He was collecting data. Watching how we respond. How we move armies. How we protect supply lines. How the Greats fight together."
Optimus's expression darkened.
"He's going to use that."
Ian nodded. "Adapt. Change tactics. Find weak points."
Optimus leaned back against the wall, thinking.
"And then he mentioned the Ancient Shade."
The room grew heavier.
Ian didn't answer right away.
Optimus continued, "You think he was warning us?"
"No," Ian said quietly. "I think he was hinting at what's coming."
Optimus looked toward the window, where the city lights of Tenrihines glowed in the distance.
"A Fourth Great War."
The words sat in the room like a threat.
Ian's jaw tightened.
"Maybe."
He turned from the reports and looked at Optimus fully.
"But we do everything we can to stop that from happening."
Optimus didn't joke. Didn't grin. He just listened.
Ian's voice lowered.
"The last Great Wars didn't just leave battlefields behind. They left kids without parents. Soldiers with minds they couldn't fix. Addiction. Broken economies. Entire generations born into war like it was normal."
He paused, eyes hard.
"Cities still haven't recovered. Families still haven't recovered. Some planets still look like the war ended yesterday."
Optimus nodded slowly.
"Yeah," he said. "You're right."
Ian looked back down at the reports.
"We can fight battles. We can stop armies. We can destroy portals. But another Great War?"
He shook his head.
"That would break too much."
Optimus stepped closer.
"Then we fight as many large wars as we have to," he said, "to prevent one Great War."
Ian looked at him.
For a moment, neither of them said anything.
Then Ian nodded.
"Yeah."
His voice hardened.
"That's what we do."
In the days that followed, the demons fully withdrew from Deccounia.
The STF and the military continued searching for answers. Recon teams scanned the wilderness. Intelligence units broke down enemy formations. Nightcrew agents chased rumors tied to Razor, the Pale Envoy, and the Ancient Shade.
But for now, the galaxy slowed.
Not peacefully.
Not safely.
Just enough for people to breathe.
The Greats returned to HQ. Soldiers repaired gear. Ships were patched. Commanders reviewed what went wrong and what barely went right.
For once, there were no alarms blaring through the halls.
No immediate invasion.
No demon army on the horizon.
Just tired warriors finally allowed to sit down.
Ian stood near the window of his office that night, looking out over Tenrihines.
The capital still stood.
The Empire still stood.
But somewhere out there, Razor had escaped with what he came for.
And beyond him,
the Ancient Shade was watching.
The Greats could rest for now.
But none of them believed the war was truly over.
