Chapter 158 - Chapter 158: Meredy

The Council members had their procedures. They always did. A survivor from an incident of this scale needed to be documented, questioned, placed somewhere appropriate while the paperwork caught up with the situation. The representative approached Meredy with the practiced manner of someone who did this regularly and considered it a kindness.

Meredy pressed herself against Erza's side and grabbed her clothes with both hands.

The tears came back immediately, not loudly, not performed, just there, running down her face over the dust that hadn't fully been cleaned off yet. Her expression was the specific expression of someone who had already lost everything they knew today and was now being told the two people they'd attached themselves to were about to be replaced by strangers with forms.

The Council representative looked at Erza.

Erza looked at Ultear.

Neither of them had the ability to say no to that face. They didn't particularly try.

"She stays with us," Erza said, in the tone she used when something had been decided.

The representative made a note of this and moved on to other matters.

That left the practical question of what came next, and both Erza and Ultear turned to Noah with the shared understanding that this was his area.

Noah was already crouching down, bringing himself to eye level with the small figure half-hidden behind Erza's hip. He looked at her carefully.

He'd caught her name during the Council's earlier attempt at questioning. Meredy. Short pink hair, red headphones pushed back off her ears, clothes that had started the day as ordinary casual wear and had accumulated a significant amount of the city's destruction over the course of the last several hours. Tear tracks had cut clean lines through the dust on her face, and more tears were replacing them in a steady quiet flow that she kept wiping at with the back of her hand without it making much difference.

Her eyes moved to his, then away, then back. Alert, underneath everything else. Still watching, still processing, even through all of it.

Noah took out a tissue and reached toward her slowly. She didn't pull back. He cleaned her face with the same careful attention he gave to things that required not making sudden movements, wiping away the grime until her face was clear.

Then he just looked at her for a moment.

That morning she had woken up with a home. With parents. With a place she belonged to and people who belonged to her. All of it was gone now, reduced to rubble and ash by two people who had made a decision that her city needed to stop existing and carried it out without particular difficulty. The scale of what she was processing was not something a person moved through quickly. She was still inside it, would be inside it for a long time, and the tears were the smallest visible part of something much larger.

One hand still had Erza's clothes in it. She wasn't letting go.

Noah kept his voice gentle and his posture open.

"Do you want to join Fairy Tail?"

Meredy blinked. The directness of it had caught her off guard.

"Sorry, I didn't explain that properly first." He kept the same tone. "My name is Noah. The sister with the scarlet hair is Erza. The other one with black hair is Ultear. All three of us are Mages from a guild called Fairy Tail." He paused. "So I want to ask if you'd like to join us."

The word that had caught was not Fairy Tail. It was the confirmation that both older sisters, the two people who had pulled her out of the wreckage and stayed with her through everything since, were part of the same place.

"I want to join," Meredy said, without any hesitation at all.

Behind him, Erza's voice came with a note in it that was half surprise and half something warmer.

"You want Meredy to join the guild?"

The question landed on Meredy like a cold hand around her heart. Her grip on Erza's clothes tightened. She looked up at Erza with an expression that was braced for the wrong answer.

Noah glanced back at Erza.

"You joined because I asked you to," he said simply. "So did Ultear. So did Sorano. All of you came to the guild after things fell apart, and the guild gave you somewhere to land." He looked at Meredy again. "This isn't different from that."

Erza was quiet for a moment. She looked down at the small hand still wrapped in her clothing, and then she looked at Meredy's face, and whatever residual uncertainty had been in her expression finished resolving itself.

"I have no objection," she said.

"Neither do I," Ultear said, then added, with the precision she applied to most things: "The Master's approval is still required."

"He'll approve," Noah said. He knew Makarov well enough to know exactly how this went. A child who had lost everything, brought in by guild members who vouched for her, asking to join. Makarov would probably cry. He would definitely approve.

"Then let's go home," Erza said.

Noah crossed to the Council representative, exchanged a few brief words, and returned. Everything substantive had already been covered. This was just courtesy.

Meredy led them to where her home had been.

The building had come down like everything else around it. Noah stood in front of the wreckage and extended his Gravity Magic outward, lifting the debris in layers, floating it aside carefully, methodically clearing the space. Meredy moved through what was uncovered and identified things, and Noah packed each one with the same care, storing them for transport. Everything that had belonged to her family, preserved as completely as what remained allowed.

He also collected her parents' remains.

When Meredy understood what he was doing, the quiet crying broke open into something less contained. Erza was beside her immediately, one arm around her, holding her steady, and Ultear moved to her other side. The three of them stayed there until the worst of it had passed and Meredy had come back to something that could keep walking.

Noah finished what he was doing and said nothing. There was nothing useful to say.

When they were certain nothing had been left behind, they left.

Meredy's mental state was too fragile for anything more demanding than getting somewhere safe and stopping. Noah teleported them directly to Magnolia, to his own home, cutting out everything in between.

Erza and Ultear took Meredy upstairs together. Bath, clean clothes, the small practical kindnesses that didn't fix anything but gave the body something to do while everything else was still too large to approach directly. Then they brought her to one of the empty rooms and prepared the bed.

Meredy lay down and immediately grabbed Erza's hem.

She didn't say anything. She didn't need to. The grip said it clearly enough. The room was quiet and unfamiliar and the person she'd attached herself to today was about to leave, and everything that had happened since this morning was still sitting right at the surface.

Erza sat down on the edge of the bed without any indication that she found this inconvenient. She settled in beside Meredy and started talking to her in the low quiet voice she used when something needed to be gently kept at bay rather than confronted directly. Not about what had happened. Just talking. Her voice even, unhurried, present.

Gradually, the grip on her clothes relaxed.

Eventually, Meredy slept.

Ultear came out of the room and found the house had rearranged itself in the interim. Noah was gone, which she had expected. Something of this size needed to be reported to Makarov personally, and with her and Erza occupied, that fell to him. The living room held the Sorano sisters, and Wendy with Carla in her arms, all of them wearing the particular expression of people who had seen something arrive at the house without any explanation and had been quietly waiting for one.

They'd registered that something was wrong from the moment Noah and the others had come through the door. The atmosphere had been clear enough. They'd said nothing, waited, and now all of them looked at Ultear as she came down.

She sat down and told them what had happened.

She kept it accurate and complete. Not softened, not dramatized. Just the facts in sequence: the city, Grimoire Heart, what they'd found when they arrived, what had been done to the people there, and the small pink-haired girl who had been the one person they'd pulled out in time to matter.

The Sorano sisters went quiet in a specific way. Their faces changed. Ultear watched it happen and knew exactly what it was. They'd lived their own version of this. Different details, same shape. A night where everything that had existed became past tense all at once and there was nothing on the other side of it but whatever came next. They hadn't talked about it much since they'd been at the guild, but it was in there, and hearing about Meredy had brought it close to the surface.

Wendy had gone pale. She was holding Carla tighter without having decided to, and tears were tracking down her face quietly. She had lost Grandeeney, had lived with that absence, but Grandeeney's disappearance had left open the possibility of return. What had happened to Meredy's family had no such opening. Hearing about someone roughly her own age going through something like that, without warning, without any chance to prepare, had gotten through her composure entirely.

Carla was still and quiet against Wendy's shoulder. She was usually the composed one of the pair, the one who observed and assessed. Right now she was pressing close to Wendy without comment, and her eyes had the look of someone working through something difficult.

Ultear let them sit with it for a while before she spoke again, keeping her voice gentle, moving through the emotional aftermath the way she'd learned to move through difficult things, steadily and without rushing it.

Slowly, the weight in the room eased.

When everyone had come back to a more even place, someone raised the question of tomorrow, and it developed naturally into a plan. Meredy had nothing here yet. She'd need things. Ordinary things, the small daily necessities that a person accumulated without thinking about it until they didn't have them anymore. They would take her shopping tomorrow, move through the city, let her see Magnolia properly for the first time with people beside her. Not to fix anything. Just to give her something to be inside besides the grief.

It was decided without anyone making it official.

Ultear looked around the room at the people who had all arrived at this house from somewhere difficult and thought that Meredy had landed in a reasonable place, all things considered.
