Chapter 59 - Ch. 59 Law Cast in Blood

The bell rang at dawn for the fourth time since Wu Chi's reassignment to logistics.

Disciples emerged in silence, forming ranks with mechanical precision born not of training, but of lingering dread. No one spoke. No one lingered.

By the time the incense at the plaza entrance burned halfway, the outer grounds were filled.

Tan Wei stood at the head of the formation, his posture upright, hands clasped behind his back, his expression composed but strained beneath the surface.

Beside him stood Elder Xu, masked and motionless, his presence pressing down upon the plaza with invisible weight. Between them knelt two figures dragged from their quarters before dawn.

Their bodies were rigid.

Their limbs refused to tremble, not because they were calm, but because their muscles no longer belonged to them. Their eyes were stretched wide in silent agony, tear tracks cutting raw lines down their cheeks.

Their mouths opened and closed in frantic motion, throats convulsing, yet not a single sound escaped their sealed lungs.

Fear had locked them in place.

The crowd did not need to be told who they were. Word had already traveled through whispers during the night.

The two kneeling disciples were the ones who had crept into the wounded hall after dusk, the ones who had slipped spirit recovery pills from beneath the cots of the broken and dying, the ones who had thought the chaos left them unseen.

They had been wrong.

Elder Xu stepped forward, the faint scrape of his boots against the stone echoing unnaturally loud in the suffocating quiet. Every disciple in the first rows felt their chests tighten as his masked gaze swept across them, slow and methodical, as if weighing each life by measure rather than by worth.

"Their crime is not complex..."

He said calmly.

"They stole medical pills designated for wounded disciples. They concealed the theft. They repeated it."

No rage entered his voice, yet every syllable carried finality.

"They took survival from those who had already paid in blood."

One of the frozen thieves attempted to shake his head in denial, but his neck did not respond. His chest heaved violently, eyes bulging as terror crushed what little composure remained within him.

"The sect's law regarding theft is clear,"

Elder Xu continued, turning his mask slightly so that its hollow gaze passed unhurriedly across the formation.

"The penalty is death."

A sound escaped someone in the rear ranks before it could be swallowed, half gasp, half sob. Tan Wei did not move to interrupt. He did not turn to look at the kneeling figures. His silence alone confirmed the sentence.

The two condemned disciples finally understood in full.

Their eyes flooded with terror so raw it shook their entire bodies. Tears poured freely now, their chests convulsing with silent screams as their minds clawed desperately for mercy that would never come. They could not beg. They could not crawl. They could not even faint.

They were trapped inside their fear and forced to watch their end approach.

Then Elder Xu turned.

Not toward the condemned.

Toward Wu Chi.

"Wu Chi."

The name struck like a blade.

Wu Chi, standing in the front logistics row, stepped forward instantly, his movements crisp with instinctive obedience. He knelt before Elder Xu without waiting for instruction, his spine rigid, his gaze lowered just enough to show acknowledgment without submission.

"The moment you reported their actions..."

Elder Xu said evenly,

"Their lives were already sealed."

Wu Chi's breath caught for an instant before steadying again under visible effort. He neither denied nor questioned the statement.

"You serve as an extension of sect law,"

Elder Xu continued.

"The law does not execute with its own hands."

His gaze shifted back to the kneeling thieves.

The entire plaza understood the implication at once.

Wu Chi did not move immediately. The realization struck him a heartbeat later, sharp and heavy, as the weight of what was being placed upon him fully settled into his bones. He was not being ordered to witness death. He was being commanded to become it.

Elder Xu extended his hand slightly.

A dagger slid across the stone floor and came to rest precisely at Wu Chi's knees.

The weapon's edge gleamed faintly in the pale dawn light.

Wu Chi's fingers trembled for the briefest instant as they closed around the hilt. Then the tremor vanished, locked away behind discipline and authority both. He rose to his feet slowly, the weight of the dagger grounding him in reality.

The two condemned disciples saw the movement and broke in silent terror.

Their bodies convulsed violently within the invisible restraints, tears pouring freely, throats shredding themselves against sealed air. One of them tried to force his voice through at last, veins bulging along his neck, but only a wet, broken wheeze escaped.

"Proceed," Elder Xu said calmly.

Wu Chi stepped forward.

Each step felt like crossing through thick mud, not from fear, but from the sheer gravity of the moment. He stopped before the first thief, a disciple he had eaten beside only days ago, a disciple whose eyes now reflected Wu Chi's own face like a mirror of approaching doom.

Wu Chi lifted the dagger.

For a fraction of a moment, his arm hesitated.

Not from mercy.

From calculation.

A poorly placed strike would stain the law with mess instead of precision.

Elder Xu tilted his head slightly.

The invisible pressure increased by a hair's breadth.

Wu Chi's muscles steadied instantly.

The blade descended in a clean arc.

The sound was wet and short, the impact final. The body crumpled forward as if its strings had been cut, blood spilling across the stone in a silent, spreading sheet.

The second thief witnessed his own death unfold second.

His eyes rolled back, foam gathering at the corners of his mouth as terror overwhelmed whatever sanity remained. He tried to faint, but fear would not grant him that escape.

Wu Chi turned without hesitation.

The second strike was even cleaner than the first.

The head rolled across the plaza stones and came to rest near the edge of Tan Wei's boots, blood pooling outward in dark arcs.

For several long seconds, not a single sound existed within the plaza. Even the wind that threaded through the mountain terraces seemed to falter.

Then Elder Xu spoke again.

"Let this be remembered."

He turned his masked gaze back to the formation.

"Law does not require hatred. Discipline does not require cruelty. But order is purchased only through obedience."

His attention returned to Wu Chi.

"You have obeyed."

Wu Chi dropped to one knee at once, blood still dripping slowly from the dagger in his grasp, his breathing steady despite the crimson tide at his feet.

"I will be expecting you in the library. Tonight.."

No rank was announced. No title spoken. None was needed.

Every disciple understood what had just occurred.

Wu Chi had crossed a threshold that could never be uncrossed.

The pressure receded.

Breathing returned to the plaza in staggered, trembling waves. Several disciples sagged where they stood, muscles unlocking as delayed shock rippled through their bodies.

Tan Wei finally moved.

"Dispose of the bodies," he ordered quietly.

Disciples rushed forward at once, lifting the corpses in rigid silence, avoiding Wu Chi's gaze as they carried death away.

Only the blood remained.

Elder Xu turned and walked from the plaza without another word.

Behind him, the entire sect watched Wu Chi rise from the stained stone.

Not as a disciple.

But as the first sharpened blade of terror.
