Chapter 94 - Chapter 94 — The Second Betrayal

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The red notification remained suspended in my vision.

[ WORLD EVENT INITIATED ]

[ THE SECOND BETRAYAL ]

Time Remaining: 48:00:00

The words felt heavier than any objective the system had ever given me.

Because this wasn't about survival.

This wasn't about escaping the Council.

This wasn't even about my seal.

This was about history repeating itself.

And history had a habit of killing everyone caught beneath it.

"Explain."

The word left my mouth like a command.

Not to Mira.

Not to Ryn.

Not to Loran.

To Veyr.

The Agent stared toward the distant Council Halls.

Toward the source of the pulse that had shaken the city.

For once, he didn't dodge the question.

For once, he didn't smile.

"Aric wasn't supposed to move yet."

The answer made my chest tighten.

"Meaning?"

Veyr's eyes narrowed.

"Meaning someone forced his hand."

Loran wiped blood from his cheek.

"I feel like that's bad."

"It's catastrophic."

That got everyone's attention.

Even the retreating Purge Units paused.

The leader's expression remained carefully neutral, but I could see it now.

Concern.

Real concern.

Not for himself.

For the city.

For the Council.

For whatever had just happened.

Ryn stepped forward.

"What is the Second Betrayal?"

Veyr looked at her.

Then at me.

Then toward the harbor.

As if deciding whether there was any point in keeping secrets anymore.

Finally—

"It's a contingency."

The words landed heavily.

"A plan created after the First Sealing."

The system flickered.

[ MEMORY RESONANCE DETECTED ]

Veyr continued.

"If the seal ever weakened beyond recovery..."

His gaze settled on me.

"...certain individuals were authorized to act."

"Authorized by who?" Mira asked.

Veyr laughed once.

There wasn't any humor in it.

"That's the problem."

A pause.

Then—

"No one remembers."

Silence.

Cold silence.

The kind that settles when something impossible is said.

Loran frowned.

"What does that even mean?"

"It means records were erased."

Veyr's voice grew quieter.

"Names deleted."

"Memories altered."

"Entire generations manipulated."

He looked directly at me.

"Even yours."

The truth of that hit harder now than it would have hours ago.

Because I had seen enough of the seal to know it was possible.

Someone had rewritten history.

Not hidden it.

Rewritten it.

And whatever had happened during the First Sealing was important enough that entire civilizations had agreed to forget.

A distant explosion echoed across Valenport.

Everyone turned.

A column of blue light erupted from somewhere near the Council Halls.

It pierced the clouds.

The sky itself rippled.

The system immediately reacted.

[ HIGH-ENERGY RESONANCE EVENT DETECTED ]

[ SOURCE CONFIRMED: COUNCIL HALLS ]

The Purge leader's expression darkened.

"No."

Veyr muttered the same word.

That scared me more than the explosion.

Because Veyr wasn't a man who startled easily.

"What is it?" I demanded.

His jaw tightened.

"He's opening the Archive."

Ryn's eyes widened.

"The Archive is real?"

"Unfortunately."

The answer carried genuine irritation.

Mira looked between them.

"What archive?"

Neither answered immediately.

That told me everything.

Whatever this Archive was...

It mattered.

A lot.

Finally Veyr spoke.

"The Council Archive contains every restricted record in Valenport."

Loran shrugged.

"So?"

Veyr looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"You don't understand."

"The real Archive."

The room fell silent again.

"Not books."

"Not documents."

His gaze drifted toward the blue pillar.

"Memories."

That changed everything.

The system flashed again.

[ QUEST UPDATED ]

[ THE SECOND BETRAYAL ]

Primary Objective:

Reach the Council Archive

Failure Condition:

Unknown

Potential Consequences:

Catastrophic

Mira exhaled slowly.

"Of course."

Loran groaned.

"Oh good."

"Another ancient secret."

"Because the last five have gone so well."

Nobody laughed.

I stepped toward the ruined opening in the basement wall.

The city stretched before us.

Valenport.

Broken.

Panicked.

Alive.

And somewhere inside it—

Master Aric.

The man I had hated for years.

The man I believed had betrayed me.

The man who now seemed to be standing at the center of something much larger than revenge.

My thoughts drifted back to the memory fragment.

Aric kneeling.

Aric afraid.

Aric begging.

Not acting like a conqueror.

Acting like a man trying to stop a disaster.

The realization tasted bitter.

Because if Aric wasn't the villain...

Then I still hadn't found one.

A sharp pain shot through my chest.

I staggered.

Mira immediately grabbed my arm.

"Kael."

"I'm fine."

"You say that every time you're absolutely not fine."

I ignored her.

Mostly because the system was flashing again.

[ PRIME RESONANT CORE ACTIVITY INCREASING ]

[ SEAL INTEGRITY: 81% ]

Eighty-one.

The number made my stomach drop.

It had been eighty-seven not long ago.

The seal wasn't cracking slowly anymore.

It was accelerating.

Veyr noticed my expression.

Of course he did.

"How much?"

I hesitated.

Then answered.

"Eighty-one."

His face hardened instantly.

"That's faster than predicted."

Ryn folded her arms.

"How bad?"

Veyr looked away.

Toward the city.

Toward the blue pillar.

"Bad enough that Aric is abandoning protocol."

That wasn't comforting.

Not even slightly.

Suddenly—

A new pulse shook Valenport.

Far stronger than the first.

The harbor water exploded upward in waves.

Windows shattered across entire districts.

Every Resonant in sight froze.

Including me.

Because I recognized the feeling.

Not the source.

The sensation.

A Soul Link.

But impossibly large.

Citywide.

The system erupted.

[ SOUL LINK DETECTED ]

[ SOURCE UNKNOWN ]

[ LINK STRENGTH: IMPOSSIBLE ]

Then a voice echoed through the city.

Not spoken.

Shared.

Directly into every mind.

Every citizen.

Every warrior.

Every living soul in Valenport.

A man's voice.

Old.

Powerful.

Terrified.

"Do not let him reach the Archive."

Silence followed.

Absolute silence.

The city seemed to stop breathing.

Then chaos exploded.

Screams.

Panic.

Confusion.

Thousands of people reacting at once.

But I wasn't focused on them.

Because I recognized the voice.

Not from memory.

From instinct.

From somewhere buried beneath the seal.

Veyr recognized it too.

His eyes widened.

For the first time since meeting him—

I saw genuine fear.

The Purge leader whispered:

"Impossible."

Ryn looked pale.

Mira looked confused.

Loran looked ready to punch reality itself.

And me?

I stared at the horizon.

At the blue pillar.

At the Council Halls.

Because the system had identified the speaker.

And the name made my blood run cold.

[ SOURCE IDENTIFIED ]

[ FIRST COUNCILOR ]

[ STATUS: DECEASED ]

The message remained.

Unchanging.

Impossible.

Terrifying.

[ FIRST COUNCILOR ]

[ STATUS: DECEASED ]

Yet his voice had just spoken.

To the entire city.

And somewhere in the distance—

beneath the pillar of blue light—

something answered.

Not a voice.

Not a signal.

A pulse.

Ancient.

Hungry.

Awake.

The system flashed one final warning.

[ NEW ENTITY DETECTED ]

Designation:

THE ARCHIVIST

Threat Level:

UNKNOWN

Veyr closed his eyes.

"Well."

Loran groaned.

"Every time someone says 'well,' my day gets worse."

Veyr opened his eyes.

For once, there was no sarcasm.

No amusement.

No games.

Only certainty.

"The worst possible person just woke up."

Far across the city—

the blue pillar expanded.

And the countdown continued.

47:58:13

47:58:12

47:58:11

The race for the Archive had begun.

And for the first time—

Kael Draven wasn't the most dangerous thing in Valenport.
