The moment Agent Veyr smiled, every instinct I possessed screamed the same warning.
Run.
Not because he was stronger.
Not because he was faster.
Because he was dangerous in a different way.
Enforcers broke bones.
Assassins cut throats.
Agents broke people.
And according to everything Ryn had ever told us, Veyr was one of the Council's best.
The harbor bells continued ringing across Valenport.
Citizens flooded the streets, desperate to get away from the docks. Merchants abandoned stalls. Sailors cut mooring lines and pushed their vessels into open water.
Fear spread faster than fire.
"Why are they running?" Mira asked.
Ryn's face remained fixed on the black warship.
"Because they know who that is."
The answer alone was enough.
Loran gripped his axe.
"We can take him."
"No."
The word left Ryn instantly.
Too fast.
Too certain.
Loran frowned.
"What do you mean no?"
"I mean no."
For the first time since meeting her, Ryn looked genuinely unsettled.
"Agent Veyr doesn't kill people."
"That's supposed to make me feel better?" Loran asked.
"It should make you feel worse."
Silence followed.
Then the warship's horn sounded.
A deep, unnatural note rolled across the harbor.
The air itself seemed to vibrate.
Suddenly my system flashed.
[ Mental Intrusion Detected ]
[ Defensive Resonance Engaged ]
[ Warning: Psychological Assault Incoming ]
Pain stabbed through my temples.
Beside me, Mira gasped.
Loran staggered.
Even Ryn winced.
Then I heard it.
A voice.
Soft.
Gentle.
Impossible.
"Kael."
My blood froze.
I knew that voice.
I hadn't heard it in years.
Yet I would recognize it anywhere.
My mother.
"No..."
The warehouse vanished.
The harbor vanished.
Valenport vanished.
I stood in a small wooden home.
A place that no longer existed.
Sunlight streamed through a window.
The scent of fresh bread filled the air.
And there she was.
Smiling at me.
Alive.
Exactly as I remembered.
My chest tightened.
For one impossible second, I wanted to believe it.
Wanted to stay.
Wanted to forget everything.
The Council.
The betrayal.
The blood.
The war.
Just stay here.
Just rest.
Then the system screamed.
[ FALSE CONSTRUCT DETECTED ]
[ AGENT VEYR ABILITY IDENTIFIED ]
[ SOUL MIRROR ]
The illusion cracked.
My mother's smile twisted.
Her face melted like wax.
Darkness poured from her eyes.
I drew my sword.
The construct shattered.
Reality returned.
I was back inside the warehouse.
Only a second had passed.
Loran was breathing heavily.
Mira looked horrified.
Ryn's daggers were buried in the floorboards.
She had stabbed them there hard enough to crack the wood.
Everyone had seen something.
Different nightmares.
Different memories.
Different weaknesses.
I immediately understood.
Veyr wasn't attacking our bodies.
He was mapping our minds.
Testing us.
Learning.
The same way the Silent Serpents had tested our combat abilities.
The Council was gathering data.
And that terrified me more than an army.
Outside, Agent Veyr remained standing on the bow of the warship.
Motionless.
Watching.
"He's smiling again," Mira whispered.
None of us looked.
We didn't need to.
We could feel it.
Hours later.
The four of us sat around a crude table in the warehouse's basement.
A single lantern illuminated the room.
The map from the Hidden Quest floated before me.
The Forgotten Vault.
Whatever secrets it contained, the Council clearly didn't want us finding them.
Which meant we had to find them.
Fast.
"The entrance is somewhere beneath the eastern docks," I said.
Loran groaned.
"Wonderful."
"What now?"
"Now we go underground."
"Why does every horrible decision start with those words?"
Mira ignored him.
Her attention remained on the map.
"The markings aren't modern."
"They're old," Ryn agreed.
"Very old."
"How old?"
Ryn hesitated.
"Before the Council."
The room grew quiet.
Again.
The idea still felt wrong.
The Council controlled everything.
The laws.
The ranks.
The guilds.
The military.
Valenport itself.
Thinking about something older than them felt like imagining a world before the sea.
Yet the evidence kept growing.
The symbol.
The vault.
My restored memories.
Something existed beneath the surface of history.
And the Council was terrified of it.
Suddenly a crash echoed above us.
Everyone froze.
Another crash followed.
Closer.
Heavy footsteps.
Multiple.
Loran stood immediately.
"Tell me that's not what I think it is."
A voice answered from upstairs.
Cold.
Calm.
Amused.
"Oh, I suspect it is."
Every muscle in my body tightened.
Ryn cursed.
Mira's face went pale.
Because we all recognized the voice.
Agent Veyr.
The floorboards creaked overhead.
Slow.
Deliberate.
He wasn't searching.
He already knew where we were.
"Interesting little hideout," Veyr called.
"I expected something less depressing."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Veyr chuckled.
"I know you're down there."
The basement suddenly felt very small.
Very confined.
Very vulnerable.
I slowly rose to my feet.
Sword in hand.
Resonance humming beneath my skin.
"Careful," Ryn whispered.
"He wants you angry."
"He wants a lot of things."
Footsteps descended the stairs.
One at a time.
Unhurried.
Like a man entering a tavern.
Not confronting enemies.
Then Agent Veyr appeared.
Dark steel armor.
Silver mask.
No visible weapon.
And somehow that made him even more dangerous.
He glanced around the room.
At Loran.
At Mira.
At Ryn.
Finally at me.
His smile widened.
"You've caused quite a mess."
I said nothing.
Veyr seemed delighted.
"I've heard so much about you, Kael."
His gaze sharpened.
"Though not as much as you think."
Something about the statement bothered me.
He noticed.
Of course he noticed.
"You still don't know, do you?"
I felt my grip tighten.
"Know what?"
Veyr laughed softly.
"The funniest part."
The room darkened.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Like the temperature had dropped.
Like something unpleasant was approaching.
"What part?" I asked.
His silver eyes locked onto mine.
"The Council didn't erase your power."
Silence.
"The Council didn't erase your memories."
A chill raced down my spine.
"What are you talking about?"
Veyr tilted his head.
Genuine curiosity in the gesture.
"As powerful as the Council is..."
His smile slowly disappeared.
"...we weren't the ones who sealed you."
The world stopped.
Ryn stared.
Mira's eyes widened.
Even Loran looked stunned.
Because every step of my life since the betrayal had been built on a single belief.
That the Council had taken everything from me.
Yet Agent Veyr sounded utterly certain.
And somehow...
I believed he wasn't lying.
The system flashed.
[ Memory Fragment Resonating ]
[ Seal Activity Increasing ]
[ Warning ]
[ Warning ]
[ Warning ]
Pain exploded behind my eyes.
Another memory threatened to surface.
Another piece of the truth.
Veyr watched the reaction with fascination.
Then he spoke the words that shattered everything.
"Kael."
For the first time, his voice lost all amusement.
"Who do you think sealed an SSS-rank Resonant powerful enough to terrify entire nations?"
My heartbeat thundered.
Because for the first time...
I realized I didn't know the answer.
And that possibility was far more frightening than any enemy waiting in the dark beneath Valenport.
