Chapter 44 - Chapter 44: A Silent Banter

Hae-in sat at the head of the conference table, a spreadsheet projected onto the screen before her. The finance team, a collection of solemn-faced men and women, presented their quarterly reports on the performance of the department stores. Hae-in listened intently, her face a mask of cool, professional detachment. She asked sharp, pointed questions, her mind meticulously analyzing every figure and projection. She was in her element, the indomitable CEO, the master of her domain.

The meeting was a serious affair, a world away from the emotional and personal dramas that had consumed her life just a week ago. But even in this highly professional setting, a part of her was now attuned to a different, more personal frequency. Her gaze, which had been fixed on the screen, drifted to the glass wall of the conference room. A familiar figure stood in the hallway.

Hyun-woo, having just returned from a meeting with the legal team, was leaning against the wall, a stack of files in his arms. He was on a break, and he was watching her. The stern, professional look he had maintained during his own meeting was gone, replaced by a soft, affectionate smile. His eyes, fixed on her, were filled with a profound, unwavering love that was so deep it almost made her heart ache.

He saw her eyes flicker toward him, and his smile widened. He gave her a small, almost imperceptible nod, a silent message that he was here, that he was her anchor. The finance team, engrossed in their numbers, was completely unaware of the silent, powerful exchange happening right outside the room.

Hae-in's composure, which had been so absolute just a moment ago, began to waver. She tried to refocus, but her eyes kept drifting back to him. The two of them, in their separate worlds, began a silent conversation through the glass.

Hyun-woo, seeing the serious expression on her face, decided it was time to change the atmosphere. He slowly, deliberately, put down his files. He then pulled out his phone and held it up to the glass, a single text message on the screen. It was a picture of him, his lips curved in a funny, playful pout. The message below it read: "Are you having fun yet? You look so serious, my dear CEO."

Hae-in's lips, which had been set in a thin, serious line, twitched. She fought the smile, but the corners of her mouth began to lift. She shook her head, a silent message to him that she was not going to give in to his silly antics. She looked at the finance team, who were still talking, oblivious to the drama unfolding just a few feet away.

Hyun-woo, however, was a man on a mission. He wasn't going to let her win this one. He put his phone back in his pocket and, with a subtle movement of his face, began to act out a silent, exaggerated story. He mimed a person struggling to carry a heavy weight, his face scrunched up in a comical expression of pain. He then pretended to drop the weight, his arms flailing in a dramatic, over-the-top display of defeat.

Hae-in's composure was crumbling. She bit her lip to keep from laughing, her shoulders shaking with a suppressed giggle. She tried to look angry at him, but her eyes, filled with a loving amusement, betrayed her. She shook her head again, a silent command for him to stop.

But he just continued, his silent theatrics getting more and more ridiculous. He pretended to pull a giant, invisible rope, his face a comical mask of intense effort. He then pretended to collapse from exhaustion, his body sliding down the wall.

Hae-in couldn't take it anymore. A snort, a small, unladylike sound, escaped her lips. The finance representatives, startled by the sudden noise, stopped talking and looked at her, a confused expression on their faces.

Hae-in quickly regained her composure, her face flushing with embarrassment. "I apologize," she said, her voice a little strained. "Please, continue."

But the damage was done. The team, confused and curious, began to look around, trying to figure out what had made their CEO laugh. Their eyes, one by one, landed on the glass wall. They saw Hyun-woo standing there, now with a wide, triumphant grin on his face. He saw them looking, and without a single shred of shame, he raised a hand and gave them a playful wave, a gesture that seemed to say, "Yes, I did that. And I'm proud of it."

The finance team, a collection of serious, no-nonsense professionals, could only stare in utter disbelief. Their stoic, unapproachable CEO was in a silent banter with her husband, and he had made her laugh so hard she had snorted. The world, it seemed, had officially gone mad.

Unbeknownst to them all, Secretary Na was walking down the hallway, her phone discreetly out and recording. She had seen the entire exchange. The silent banter, the exaggerated theatrics, the snort of laughter, the triumphant wave—she had it all on video. A small, knowing smile played on her lips.

This was a treasure trove of information, a secret weapon in her arsenal. It was a beautiful, funny, and utterly perfect display of their love, and she knew it would make the perfect bribe for any future requests. After all, a person who could make the CEO of Queens Group snort with laughter was a person with an immense amount of power. And a video of that moment was a power all its own.
