Chapter 9 - STAY SHARP

Ted let the silence breathe for a few more seconds before finally moving. He pulled out a chair from the row directly across from Kruel and sat down, heavy and deliberate, as if he had decided this was his table now. Nobody protested. A few kids peeked in from the doorway, but once they saw Ted had settled, they melted back into the hallway.

Mike's jaw nearly hit the floor. "He's.. uh… he's sitting here?" he whispered loudly, as if Ted wouldn't hear.

Ted ignored him. His gaze landed squarely on Kruel again, steady and unnerving. "You've grown."

Kruel blinked. "What?"

"Last year," Ted said, leaning an elbow on the desk. "You couldn't even look people in the eye. Now you sit there staring at me like you're not afraid. I notice things like that."

Kruel's face warmed, though he wasn't sure if it was embarrassment or something else. He wanted to say he wasn't afraid because he couldn't be hurt ...not really...but that was a truth he could never tell. So instead he muttered, "Guess people change."

Ted's mouth curved slightly, not quite a smile, more like acknowledgment.

Across from them, Nira stood silently, arms crossed. She hadn't sat back down; instead, she lingered just a step back, her expression unreadable. Her eyes, though, were steady, on Kruel. She didn't say anything, didn't interrupt, but the weight of her attention pressed against him all the same. It wasn't judgment, not exactly. More like she was measuring him, testing him without words.

Kruel shifted under the quiet of her gaze, fighting the urge to look away.

Mike, still recovering, threw his hands up. "Okay, hold on. Can somebody explain what's happening here? Because two minutes ago this was just me and Kruel, and now suddenly it's like I don't even exist at this table!"

Nira didn't respond. She only tilted her head slightly, as though Mike's voice was background noise she didn't care to acknowledge.

Kruel almost laughed at the look on Mike's face, but he swallowed it down quickly, tension buzzing in his chest.

Ted leaned back in his chair, arms folding. "This is interesting," he murmured. "Haven't seen a group like this in a while."

Kruel looked at him warily. "What do you mean?"

Ted's eyes flicked between the three of them. "You. Him. Her. Different pieces. Doesn't look like it should fit… but maybe it does."

The weight of his words sank into Kruel's chest. For some reason, it felt like Ted wasn't just talking about friendship or classmates. It was bigger than that, though Kruel couldn't put his finger on it.

The bell rang then, shrill and jarring, but nobody at their table moved right away. Around them, students rushed for the doors, chatter flooding the halls again, but the four of them stayed in their small corner of stillness.

Finally, Ted stood. His presence seemed to fill the space even more when he rose to his full height. He glanced down at Kruel. "Stay sharp. People are watching you, even if you don't realize it."

Before Kruel could respond, Ted walked off, disappearing into the crowd with the same steady stride he had entered with. The tension he left behind lingered like smoke after a fire.

Mike blew out a breath, shaking his head. "What… just happened? Did Ted Post actually just sit with us? This is insane."

Nira slid back into her seat, her expression calm again, as if nothing unusual had occurred. She pulled her notebook onto the desk, flipping it open to a new page. She didn't look at either of them, but Kruel still felt her attention, silent and sharp, as if she was filing away her own conclusions.

He stared at her, a shiver crawling up his spine.

And for the first time, he wondered if Mike was right. Maybe something was shifting. Maybe his quiet days of being ignored were finally over.
