Chapter 89 - 89 - The Living Dead

They'd been traveling for two hours when Kenji called for a halt.

"We'll rest here for a bit," he said quietly, scanning the small clearing they'd entered. "The Konoha camp is still several hours away, and we need to coordinate our story before we arrive."

Kakashi nodded, his eye showing exhaustion despite the adrenaline that had been keeping him going. Rin didn't respond vocally, just shifted the weight of her "corpse" on her back and moved to sit against a tree.

Kenji's sensory techniques detected no nearby threats. They were alone in this patch of forest, surrounded by the sounds of night insects and the occasional rustle of leaves. Safe enough for a brief stop.

"I'll set up a small fire," Kakashi said, already gathering dry wood from the forest floor. "We should eat something."

"Keep it small," Kenji cautioned. "We don't want to attract attention."

While Kakashi worked on the fire, Kenji watched Rin from the corner of his eye. She'd set the mimic corpse down, leaning it against the tree beside her, and now she sat staring at it with an expression he couldn't quite read through the mask.

The fire caught, small flames licking at the kindling. The warm light pushed back the darkness in their area.

Kakashi pulled out ration bars from his pack and distributed them. None of them had much appetite, but they needed the energy. For several minutes, the only sounds were the crackling fire and the rustle of ration bar wrappers.

Then Rin spoke "What's it like? Being dead?"

Kakashi froze mid-chew, his eye darting to her. Kenji set down his ration bar and waited.

"I mean..." she continued, gesturing toward the mimic corpse beside her. "That's supposed to be me. Nohara Rin, dead. Killed by Kakashi's Chidori. Everyone will believe it. My friends, my family, everyone I trained with at the Academy. They'll all think I'm gone. And I'll just... what? Disappear? Become someone else? Live in ANBU and never be Rin again?"

Kakashi looked away, clearly not knowing what to say. The guilt that had been eating at him since he'd pierced her chest with his Chidori resurfaced. Even knowing she was alive now, the memory of that moment was too vivid.

Kenji considered his words before responding.

"You'll be Rin. Your identity doesn't come from other people recognizing you. It comes from knowing who you are yourself."

Rin's head turned toward him, and though he couldn't see her expression behind the mask, he could feel her attention.

"That's easy to say," she said, and there was an edge to her voice. Not quite bitter, but heading that direction. "You still get to be Yamanaka Kenji. You didn't die today."

"No," Kenji agreed. "But I've killed enough people to know something about death and identity."

He paused, organizing his thoughts. This wasn't something he talked about often.

"Every person you kill leaves a mark. Not visible, but you feel it. And after enough marks, you start wondering if the person you were before still exists, or if they died somewhere along the way and got replaced by whoever you are now."

Kakashi's eye was back on him now.

"The difference is that you get to choose. Nohara Rin, the medical-nin died today. But the person wearing that mask gets to decide who she becomes next. That's more agency than most people have."

Rin was quiet for a long moment. Then she reached up and slowly removed her mask.

Her face was pale in the firelight, eyes red from crying earlier. But her expression was thoughtful rather than despairing.

"I don't want to stop being a medic. Even if I'm in ANBU, I still want to help people. That's... that's who I am. Not just what I do."

"Then keep doing it," Kenji said simply. "ANBU needs medics too."

"And you won't lose yourself," Kakashi added quietly. "I'll make sure of it. I failed Obito, and I almost failed you. I won't fail again."

"Kakashi..." Rin started to protest, but he cut her off.

"I mean it. Whatever you need, whatever help you need staying yourself while everyone thinks you're dead, I'll be there."

Rin looked between them both.

"Okay," she said. "Okay. I can do this."

She picked up her mask and turned it over in her hands, examining the plain white surface with its cat features.

"It's strange," she said after a moment. "I spent my whole life trying to prove I was good enough to be a kunoichi despite being a civilian-born orphan. Training harder, studying more, volunteering for every mission to show I could keep up. And now I'm being told the best way to serve Konoha is to disappear. To let everyone think I died. It feels like... like everything I worked for just got erased."

"It didn't get erased," Kenji said. "It's just not visible anymore. Some of the most important work happens in shadows. Ask anyone in ANBU."

"I know. I know that. It's just hard."

Rin looked at her "corpse" again.

"At least I get a second chance. Obito didn't. All those ninjas who died in this war didn't. I'm alive, even if I have to hide it."

Kakashi flinched at Obito's name but didn't look away.

The fire crackled, sending up a small shower of sparks that disappeared into the night sky.

Kenji stood and stretched, signaling it was time to move. "We should reach the camp before dawn. That gives us a few hours to finalize our story."

As they packed up and prepared to continue, Rin secured her mask back in place and lifted her "corpse" again. But her posture was more certain. Less like she was carrying a burden and more like she was carrying evidence of a mission completed.

Which, in a way, she was.

The three of them resumed their journey through the forest, moving in practiced silence. Above them, clouds drifted across the moon, and somewhere in the distance, an owl called out into the darkness.

Nohara Rin had died today. The woman wearing her face had survived.

Whether those were the same person or not... well, that was a question that would take time to answer. But at least she'd have the chance to find out.

---

The Kiri forces withdrew from the Land of Fire shortly after Rin's apparent death. Within days, they'd signed a ceasefire agreement with Konoha.

Not long after Kenji returned to the village with Kakashi and the disguised Rin, Iwa also capitulated. With Suna already allied with Konoha and applying diplomatic pressure, they had little choice. The treaty was signed quickly, with minimal negotiation.

The Third Great Ninja War was over.

---

Today, Minato and Kushina's home was unusually lively.

The apartment wasn't huge, but it had a warm, lived-in feel that made guests comfortable. Kushina had insisted on hosting a celebration dinner for everyone who'd made it back alive, and the low table in their main room was practically sagging under the weight of food.

Grilled meat, skewered dango in three colors, rice balls, tempura vegetables, and what looked like enough sake to get a small army drunk. Kushina had gone all out.

Gathered around the table were Kenji, Honoka, Jiraiya, and Kakashi and Rin still adjusting to being back in the village. Minato sat at the head of the table with Kushina beside him, her energy filling the room even when she wasn't talking.

"So that's basically what happened," Kenji said, biting into a tri-color dango. "Rin almost died. There's clearly some kind of shadowy organization pulling strings behind the scenes."

He turned to Jiraiya, who was sampling his sake with the critical eye of a connoisseur.

"Jiraiya-sama, you've traveled all over the shinobi world for years. Ever heard any rumors about this kind of... mastermind?"

He wanted to plant seeds of suspicion about Madara and Black Zetsu without revealing how much he knew. If he could get Minato and Jiraiya thinking about hidden threats, maybe they'd be more alert when the Nine-Tails attack came. Besides, the Third Great Ninja War really had been suspicious as hell. Villages attacking each other with unusual aggression, conflicts erupting over minimal provocation, and now sudden ceasefires after years of bloodshed. Looking at the pattern, outside manipulation seemed obvious.

Jiraiya set down his sake cup.

"Now that you mention it, yeah. The whole war was weird." He frowned, clearly working through something in his head. "Every village went at each other like they'd lost their minds. In hindsight, it wouldn't surprise me if someone was stirring the pot from the shadows. Take Kiri, for example. They invaded the Land of Fire with no warning or clear objective. Now they're pulling out just as suddenly and agreeing to peace terms? That doesn't track."

"To think someone would use an entire war to pursue some secret agenda..." Minato's frown deepened. He looked toward Kakashi and Rin. "I'm sorry. I wasn't there when you needed me. I failed to save Obito, and I almost let Rin fall victim to this conspiracy."

"Sensei, please don't," Kakashi said immediately, waving his hand. "Nobody could have predicted something like this."

Rin nodded agreement. "And Kenji-senpai saved me." Her tone was warm with gratitude.

Kenji shifted uncomfortably but didn't respond. He didn't deserve thanks.

"Exactly!" Kushina suddenly threw an arm around Rin's shoulders, pulling her close and rubbing their cheeks together affectionately. "We have to thank Kenji for saving such a cute girl! If something had happened to her, I'd never forgive the bastard who put that curse mark on her! If I ever get my hands on them...!"

She rubbed Rin's cheek again, making the younger girl laugh helplessly. Kushina's affection was always direct and overwhelming, but undeniably genuine.

"Speaking of the ceasefire," Jiraiya said, clearly trying to lighten the mood that had gotten too heavy. "The treaty Iwa signed with Konoha includes something interesting. Sensei agreed to give up reparations entirely. Apparently he wants the war to end as quickly as possible."

"WHAT?!" Kushina slammed her hand on the table hard enough to make the dishes rattle. "He agreed to that? Has he lost his mind?! That's admitting we lost! All the sacrifices... Obito and so many others... are their deaths supposed to mean nothing?!"

Most ninjas in the village only knew the war had ended. The treaty details were being kept quiet for obvious reasons. If the general population found out Konoha had waived reparations after winning, there would be riots.

"He has his reasons," Jiraiya said with a sigh. He refilled his sake cup before continuing. "He's planning to take all the blame for the war onto himself, then resign as Hokage to make way for the Fourth."

It was also unavoidable. If the full treaty details became public knowledge, Hiruzen would be crucified by popular opinion. Better to step down voluntarily, preserve some dignity, and let a new Hokage start fresh without that baggage.

"The Fourth Hokage?" Kakashi and Rin both looked up from their food.

"That's right," Jiraiya confirmed with a nod. "The main candidates are Minato and Orochimaru."

"Eh? Minato-sensei?" Rin turned to stare at her teacher, shock giving way to excitement. She might actually be the student of a future Hokage?

Minato smiled gently, not denying it. "It's not finalized yet. The decision has to go through the daimyō's court and the village advisors. It only becomes official once the appointment scroll is issued."

He was being modest, but everyone at the table could read between the lines. The decision was probably already made.

"In my opinion, it's definitely going to be Minato," Kenji said, passing Honoka a red bean dango she'd been eyeing.

"Orochimaru is one of the Sannin, sure. But when it comes to popularity and reputation among the troops? He can't compete with the 'Yellow Flash' who made his name in the Third War. Plus... Orochimaru's personality is better suited to leading something like ANBU. Minato's warm and reliable nature, the way people naturally trust him... that's what a Hokage should be."

"Right, right! Minato-sensei is perfect for it!" Rin chimed in immediately, her eyes shining with admiration.

"Haha, thank you all for believing in me so much." Minato scratched his head. "But we'll see what happens."

"I think you'll be chosen," Jiraiya said with confidence. "You've earned it, Minato. The village needs someone like you."

"Great!" Kushina jumped to her feet, hands on her hips, laughing boldly. "That means I'll be the Hokage's wife! Let's see anyone try to stop me after that!"

The table erupted in laughter, the earlier tension dissolving completely.

---

A few days later, the announcement went up.

Kenji was passing through the village center when he noticed the crowd gathering in front of the Hokage Building. The bulletin board that usually posted mission assignments and public notices had a new document prominently displayed.

He moved closer to read it, though he already knew what it would say.

[Effective immediately, Sarutobi Hiruzen steps down as Third Hokage. Namikaze Minato will succeed him as Fourth Hokage. The inauguration ceremony will be held...]

The crowd around him buzzed with speculation. Some people looked thrilled. Others seemed uncertain about such a young Hokage. A few were clearly disappointed that their preferred candidate hadn't been chosen. But overall, the mood was positive. Minato was well-liked, and after years of war, people wanted change.

---

On the day of Minato's inauguration, the area in front of the Hokage Building was packed.

Villagers and ninjas crowded every available space, craning their necks to see the ceremony. Kenji stood toward the back with Kaede, Haruto, and Honoka, content to watch from a distance rather than pushing forward for a better view.

The ceremony itself was relatively simple. No excessive pomp or lengthy speeches.

Hiruzen stood on the raised platform, looking older than Kenji remembered. The war had worn him down. He held the Hokage's ceremonial hat in both hands.

"Konoha is in your hands now." His voice carried across the plaza, amplified by a basic technique. He extended the hat toward Minato with both hands.

Minato stepped forward and accepted it.

"To protect Konoha, I am willing to give my life."

His voice was clear, carrying conviction. He placed the hat firmly on his head, then turned to face the assembled crowd. The ceremonial robe with "Fourth Hokage" emblazoned across the back shifted as he moved, catching the sunlight.

The crowd erupted in cheers.

Minato wave to the villagers, projecting confidence and warmth despite probably being nervous as hell inside. The era of the Fourth Hokage had officially begun.

Which meant the Nine-Tails attack was coming closer.

The question that nagged at Kenji's mind was simple: would Obito still trigger it?

Rin was alive. If Obito somehow discovered that truth, would it change his plans?

---

A few days after the inauguration, three figures stood atop the Hokage Rock.

Minato stood at the front, looking down at the village spread out below them. Kakashi and Rin stood slightly behind him.

"Kakashi. Rin." He turned to face them. "We still don't know who was behind the manipulation. We don't know their goals or what they might try next. I'm concerned that if you continue operating under your original identities, you'll be exposed to danger again. So I've decided to transfer you both into my direct ANBU unit. From now on, you'll carry out missions under ANBU identities exclusively. No public appearances as yourselves. Is that clear?"

"Yes, Minato-sensei!" Rin replied loudly, without a trace of hesitation.

"Yes, Minato-sensei... no, Fourth Hokage." Kakashi caught himself mid-sentence, correcting to the proper form of address.

"Just call me Minato-sensei," Minato said with a slight laugh, waving off the formality. "Besides, there are still people in the village who object to me being Hokage. They say I'm too young. So let's keep things familiar among us."

He stepped forward and placed a hand on each of their shoulders.

"From here on out, you two are my right and left hands. Together, we'll protect this village. No matter what threats come, we'll face them as a team."

Kakashi and Rin exchanged glances, each seeing resolve in the other's eyes.

They would protect Konoha. Just like Obito would have wanted.
