Misty did not know these Pokémon. She took out her Pokédex and pointed it at Solrock first.
Solrock looked like an orange meteorite. Its body was round and uneven. Eight yellow rocky spikes grew from its sides. It had a strange black pattern around its eyes.
The Pokédex spoke quickly. "Solrock, the Meteorite Pokémon. A Rock and Psychic type. Some say it fell from space. It gets power from the sun. On sunny days, Solrock stands in a line to absorb solar energy. This makes it very strong during the day. It floats and can read an opponent's mind. When it spins its body, it emits a bright light that can blind enemies."
After learning about Solrock, Misty pointed her Pokédex at Lunatone.
Lunatone was also a strange meteorite Pokémon. It looked like a tan moon. Its style was very similar to Solrock.
The Pokédex spoke again. "Lunatone, the Meteorite Pokémon. A Rock and Psychic type. It was first found 40 years ago where a meteorite crashed. Because of this, some think it comes from space. Scientists found that the moon's phases affect its power. It becomes active and full of energy under a full moon. Its red eyes can be intimidating. It can put enemies to sleep with its gaze."
Together, these two Pokémon resembled the sun and the moon.
With the model planets hanging from the ceiling, the gym looked like a small solar system.
Natsui looked at the floating Pokémon. He reached for the bags on his belt.
This battle would be hard. Even though it was only one round, he was facing twins. They had fought together for a long time and had perfect teamwork. Natsui had to choose his Pokémon carefully.
After thinking for a moment, he made his choice.
He threw two Poké Balls and shouted, "Go, Metang! Milotic!"
Two blue lights flashed. Metang and Milotic appeared in front of Solrock and Lunatone.
Milotic was a pure Water type. Metang was a Steel and Psychic type. Both had an advantage over Rock types. On paper, Natsui had a big lead.
But things are not always as they seem.
As Gym Leader Pokémon, Solrock and Lunatone were strong. They worked together well in this special room. They would not be easy to beat.
Natsui's Pokémon were different. They had evolved recently and were still growing. They also had never fought in a double battle before. Because they lacked experience, the fight was more dangerous than it looked.
Also, Solrock and Lunatone were Psychic types. These Pokémon are always tricky in a real fight.
Natsui thought he had a fifty-fifty chance to win.
But he would only know for sure once the battle started. He wanted to see how his Pokémon performed.
Rachael saw that both sides were ready. she signaled for the match to begin!
Tate attacked first.
"Solrock, use Tackle!"
Solrock was fast. It crossed the field quickly and charged toward Milotic.
Natsui saw Tate's plan right away.
Tate did not use a Psychic move. He used Tackle to test Natsui's strength.
Using such a simple attack against Natsui was a mistake. It might work on new trainers, but not on him.
"Milotic, use Water Gun!" Natsui shouted.
Milotic opened its mouth and fired a long stream of water. It hit Solrock directly. The water caused damage and stopped Solrock's charge.
At the same time, Lunatone used Tackle on Metang from the other side.
Natsui did not tell Metang to hide. "Metang, use Take Down!"
Metang charged forward and hit Lunatone head-on.
Bang!
The two Pokémon crashed together. Take Down hurt Metang a little, but it was much stronger. Metang won the collision.
Natsui won the first exchange. Tate and Liza looked at each other. They became more serious.
This challenger was strong.
In past gym battles, they always used these quick attacks to test opponents. Their Solrock and Lunatone were very fast and powerful. Most trainers could not block them so easily.
They realized Natsui was a dangerous enemy.
The twins stopped holding back. They decided to use their full power.
"Lunatone, use Ice Beam!" Liza yelled.
"Solrock, use Solar Beam!" Tate shouted.
Both Pokémon began to gather energy. A second later, two bright beams of light shot toward their targets!
The blue Ice Beam and the yellow Solar Beam stood out in the dark room.
Natsui did not wait to be hit.
He gave two quick orders. He told Metang to use Psychic and Milotic to use Hydro Pump.
The four attacks crashed in the middle of the field. There was a loud explosion. The heat from the moves turned the water into steam. Soon, thick mist covered most of the field.
The steam blocked everyone's vision. No one could see what the other side was doing.
Natsui was careful. He did not let his Pokémon enter the steam. He waited for it to clear.
When the steam finally vanished, Solrock and Lunatone were gone!
Natsui was surprised for a second.
But he reacted fast. He knew where they were hiding.
He looked up at the ceiling. He saw the two Pokémon hiding behind a large model planet!
"There they are!"
The twins used the steam to hide. They wanted to attack from above.
But Natsui found them.
Tate and Liza were shocked. Natsui had found them so quickly.
They used this trick often. Most trainers are not used to fighting in 3D spaces. Even if they are warned, they often forget to look up at the hanging planets.
Since Natsui saw them, the surprise attack failed.
The battle became a direct fight again. In just a short time, all of the twins' best tricks had failed.
Now, it was Natsui's turn to counterattack!
"Metang, use Flash Cannon!"
Flash Cannon was a strong Steel move. It was very effective against Rock types.
Energy gathered in front of Metang's chest. It fired a beam at the two Pokémon.
Solrock and Lunatone knew this room well. They did not wait for an order. They moved behind the model planet to hide from the beam.
The beam missed the Pokémon, but it hit the model planet!
The powerful move punched a huge hole through the model. It broke the metal wires holding the planet up. A second later, the heavy planet crashed onto the battlefield below.
This shocked the twins. Their Pokémon were now exposed again.
They looked at the broken pieces of the planet. They wondered if Natsui hit it by accident or if he did it on purpose to destroy their hiding spot.
They shook their heads and focused. "Use Psychic!" they both shouted.
The two Pokémon used their strongest Psychic attacks.
Natsui stayed calm. "Metang, use Psychic too! Create a shield in front of you!"
Metang was not strong enough to block two Psychic moves alone. But Natsui had a plan.
After Metang started its move, Natsui looked at Milotic. "Now! Get behind Metang and use Surf!"
Surf is a very powerful Water move. Even if there is no water nearby, the Pokémon creates a giant wave that crashes into the enemy.
The invisible Psychic powers hit Metang's shield. The force was so strong that Metang was pushed back slowly.
Then, a huge amount of water exploded from Milotic. The situation changed instantly.
The wave crashed across the uneven floor. It even picked up the broken pieces of the model planet and carried them toward Solrock and Lunatone.
Tate and Liza were worried. Water moves did double damage to their Pokémon. They could not ignore this.
They stopped attacking Metang and told their Pokémon to fly higher. This was exactly what Natsui wanted!
A twister suddenly rose from the water.
Solrock and Lunatone could not escape. They were pulled into the wind. Because they were small and could only float, they could not fight the strong air.
Metang began to charge energy while the enemies were trapped. It waited for the wind to stop so it could finish the fight.
Tate and Liza were very nervous. They watched their Pokémon spin in the wind.
Solrock and Lunatone were tough because they were made of rock. They survived the Twister, but they were weak when they finally came out.
The twins saw Metang aiming at them.
"Get out of the way!" they yelled.
But it was too late. Metang's attack was already there!
Flash Cannon shot through the air and exploded right between the two Pokémon before they could move.
Boom!
The entire space-themed battlefield lit up.
