Chapter 4 - Teeth Beneath the Moonlight

The alley was too quiet.

Ren shouldn't have come this way, but something had pulled him—an invisible thread twisting around his chest, tugging him from the safety of his routine and guiding him down a narrow street lined with broken lamps and old walls that leaned like drunks.

A strange compulsion had led him away from the main roads, past the rust-colored fences, and into the mouth of this forgotten alley.

Now he was alone.

But not for long.

He heard it—a footstep. Too soft to be human.

Ren turned just as a figure stepped from the shadows. Young. Male. Hoodie soaked from the fading mist. His grin was too wide, too calm, like he'd already decided what would happen next.

Red eyes glowed beneath the streetlight.

Vampire.

Ren didn't flinch. His hand hovered near the blade hidden inside his coat, though he already knew it wouldn't help.

"Well, well," the vampire said, licking his lips. "Ren Tsurugi in the flesh. Your sister's made quite a name for herself. It's cute that she thinks she can keep you safe."

Ren said nothing.

"Oh, don't be like that," the vampire chuckled, stepping closer. "You're always so quiet. Guess you're the soft one. The weak one."

Ren's voice came low and calm. "Try me."

The vampire grinned wider. "Gladly."

He moved—but he didn't reach Ren.

A blur of white and black dropped between them like a thunderclap. The air cracked with pressure as the attacker slammed into the vampire, hurling him across the alley into the brick wall with a force that left cracks behind.

The vampire crumpled, stunned.

Ren blinked. His heart stopped.

The boy who had haunted him from rooftops and dreams now stood just feet away, back to him, shoulders tense, coat fluttering in the wind.

White hair.

Gold eyes.

Cold like the moon.

Kazuki.

Ren whispered his name before even knowing he knew it.

Kazuki turned slowly, and for the first time, Ren saw his face clearly. Pale skin. Sharp cheekbones. Lips slightly parted like he had forgotten how to breathe. And eyes—those fierce, golden eyes that had stared at him through rain and silence—softened when they met his.

They just stood there.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

Until the vampire behind Kazuki groaned.

Kazuki turned, gaze sharpening. In one swift motion, he gripped the vampire by the throat and pinned him to the wall with a strength that made Ren flinch.

"Leave him," Kazuki said, voice calm but deadly, "or I'll tear you apart."

The vampire snarled. "You're protecting a hunter's brother now?"

Kazuki's grip tightened. "I don't belong to your clan anymore. Tell them if they come near him again, I'll end them."

The vampire stared, then vanished into mist, slipping into the night like a curse lifted too late.

And then it was only the two of them again.

Ren. Kazuki.

Silence.

"You… saved me," Ren said, his voice unsteady.

Kazuki didn't meet his eyes. "You shouldn't have been here."

"You were following me."

Kazuki hesitated. "I didn't plan to."

"But you're always there. Watching."

"I couldn't help it," Kazuki admitted. "You looked like you were falling. I wanted to see if you hit the ground."

Ren blinked. "And if I did?"

Kazuki finally met his gaze. "Then I'd have caught you."

The words stunned them both.

Kazuki stepped back quickly, as if the space between them had caught fire. "I don't know why I'm drawn to you. I just am. But I shouldn't be."

Ren took a step closer. "You're not going to hurt me."

"You don't know that."

"But you've had chances. And you didn't."

Kazuki's voice dropped. "You don't understand. I'm not safe. I'm not—"

Ren touched his wrist.

Kazuki flinched like he'd been burned. "Don't—"

But Ren didn't pull away. "I'm not afraid of you."

"Then you're a fool."

"Maybe."

Kazuki's breathing was shallow, ragged. "I haven't felt this in a long time. This… ache. This hunger that has nothing to do with blood."

Ren whispered, "Then what's it for?"

Kazuki looked at him—truly looked. "For something I thought I couldn't feel anymore."

A pause. The alley was so still it felt like time had stopped.

Kazuki's hand twitched toward Ren, like he wanted to reach for him—and couldn't.

"I should go," he said.

"You don't have to."

"I do. Because if I don't, I'll stay."

And just like that—he was gone.

The air rushed back around Ren like a breath he'd forgotten to take. He stood there in the echo of it all, wind brushing his hair, his fingers still tingling from where they touched cold skin.

For the first time in years, he felt something powerful rise in his chest.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

But something wild and dangerous.

Longing.
