"Mrs. Kane, I brought a gift for Miss Monroe." Serena Sullivan finished speaking and turned to leave.
Left alone with Claire Sullivan, Mrs. Kane's voice became softer and gentler.
"Claire." She looked at Claire Sullivan very seriously, and Claire grew puzzled, not knowing what kind of secrets two classmates who hadn't seen each other in years could possibly have to share.
"How are things between you and Felix Lockwood?"
"Felix Lockwood?" Claire Sullivan froze for a moment. Why bring him up out of nowhere?
"What about him and me?" Claire countered. She had already made things very clear to Felix Lockwood: she hadn't chosen him before, and she certainly wouldn't now.
"Felix has always loved you very deeply." Mrs. Kane said solemnly. "You're divorced now—wouldn't it be good to give him a chance?"
"You're not seriously thinking of getting back together with Simon Sterling!" Mrs. Kane said, turning her head to look at Simon, who was chatting with some people not far away.
