Classification: Four-Tiered Arcane Framework
Foundational Principle: Mana
Mana is the primordial magical essence underlying all magic in Neo Opus's world. It exists independently, as a natural current running through the world, like electricity through a wire. No Peculiar generates mana; they channel it, drawing it through their bodies and shaping it into spells via incantation, gesture, and/or will. Crucially, incantation and gesture are not exclusive to Peculiar-tier magic — they are a universal grammar for directing magic, regardless of whether the source is Ambient Mana, personal mana reserves, or divine channelling. This means the language of magic (Latin-vernacular incantation, precise gesture) is consistent across every tier; what differs is the source being tapped and the cost/limitation structure governing that source.
When a spell is cast, mana is consumed, leaving behind a visible residue at the casting site — trails of iridescent vapour that create a heatless, mirage-like distortion in the air. This residue is visible only to Peculiar eyes; Normies cannot perceive it because, unlike Peculiars, they're not attuned to mana. The residue lingers briefly before dissipating.
The Four Tiers
Tier One — Ambient Mana: The raw magical essence existing freely in the world, belonging to no one by inherent right. It's actively mined and processed to be usable; the substance known as Venerum is the primary conduit through which Ambient Mana is harvested and refined at industrial scale. This tier is defined by extraction and ownership disputes (who controls the mines, who controls Siso Corp) rather than by personal casting.
Tier Two — Peculiar Spellcasting: The use of personal mana reserves, activated through will, incantation, and/or gesture, to produce specific effects. Spells follow a pseudo-Latin vernacular and are formally taught at the Praesidium. This is the most common tier of magic in the world, and it requires effort, skill, and/or cost, meaning practitioners experience fatigue, exertion, and the need for rest/replenishment (demonstrated by Timoth, who nearly breaks a sweat moving a single heavy Strider and visibly strains during more demanding casting).
Tier Three — Mawborn Ability: The channelling of a patron god's limitless mana through a specific human vessel. Categorically different from Peculiar Spellcasting in both source and scale. This is not a bigger personal reserve, but an entirely different kind of supply: one that originates outside the physical plane, is inexhaustible, and does not run on the same depletion/rest cycle Peculiar magic obeys. Mawborn power does not "run out" — it flows continuously from a divine source permanently anchored inside the vessel. This tier is extremely rare, unregistered, and — per Cura policy — deliberately kept off the books, on the reasoning that "it's just better for the world not to know."
The physical evidence of a Mawborn's nature is mana overflow: because the divine supply permanently exceeds what a human body is built to contain, excess mana leaks continuously from the Mawborn's pores, visible only to other Mawborns as glowing footprints or ambient residue trailing their movement — a permanent state of being "above capacity," structurally different from the contained, deploy-and-replenish mana economy of ordinary Peculiars.
Mawborns are physically identifiable by white hair (seen in both Ratelsi and Ryken), and their connection to their patron god is marked by a seal that appears at the corners of the Maw (mouth) — but only at the moment the god is actively being invoked, not as a permanent brand. The mouth is the symbolic site for this because it is the origin point of incantation (the activation mechanism of all spellcasting), the site of breath (the fundamental marker of life), and, for Mawborns specifically, the literal threshold between human and divine, the point at which the patron god crosses into physical expression. Unlike the Arcane Eye, which is imposed permanently from outside as a tool of institutional classification, the Mawborn seal emerges from within and only in the moment of will and circumstance.
Tier Four — Magitech: The seamless fusion of natural mana with mechanical engineering across Argona's urban infrastructure. Rather than magic used by individuals, this tier describes an entire environment infused with mana such that the city itself functions as a reactive, technomantic organism, responding to, powering, and monitoring civil infrastructure. This is the tier that transformed Argona after Venerum's discovery, turning street lighting, transportation, communication (HoloSmarts, the Mesh), and force field maintenance into a single mana-integrated nervous system.
Venerum and Venerite
Venerum is a rare, glowing blue stone that serves as the primary energy source for Argona's technology. Discovered in 2015 in an underground tunnel mapping Zone X, its luminescent glow and faint hum hinted at extraordinary energy potential. Scientists quickly recognized its value, leading to rapid commercialization by corporations like Siso Corp, a key partner of the Cura, whose head is among the Quinque Sapientes.
The mineral's discovery after the Storm of 2010 in Zone X makes it a geological or extraterrestrial anomaly. The mineral's difficulty of extraction makes it a coveted resource, explaining Siso Corp's dominance and the Cura's reliance on corporate funding.
Venerum functions as a natural conduit for Ambient Mana, and its discovery catalysed Argona's entire technological and magical transformation — the shift from ordinary infrastructure to Magitech-integrated urban systems. Venerum's true origin remains entirely unexplained within the story's internal record: "no record of its existence before that excavation" exists, despite Siso Corp's extensive documentation of everything that came after.
Venerite is Venerum's refined form, an exponentially more potent, weaponizable energy crystal capable of vaporizing a target or powering fifty city blocks for a month. It provides immense power, enabling advanced technologies like force field domes, energy weapons and Peculiar branding devices. Extraction and refinement are restricted operations requiring the Primarch's official seal, making legitimate Venerite scarce, tightly controlled, and worth a fortune on the black market (a single crystal fetching up to half a million Aures). Detonator rifles are purpose-built to safely fire Venerite ammunition; improvised use (as Broco demonstrates, fusing a raw crystal directly into a standard sidearm) is extraordinarily dangerous without expert care.
