The lingering aftermath of Gray's latest public humiliation still hung heavy in the air. Across the tavern hall, the rest of the guild was slowly, reluctantly, picking up the pieces of the shattered battlefield.
Lucy Heartfilia sat perched at the bar, her fingers tightly cupped around a fresh, sparkling drink Mirajane had slid her way to "steady the shaking soul."
Because honestly... her soul was currently vibrating on a frequency of pure panic. She needed this. She needed a lot of things, and a reality check was prime among them.
Kai—Kairos Sunveil—was leaning casually against a nearby pillar. He idly flicked a silver coin back and forth across his knuckles, a lazy, rhythmically metallic clink-clink-clink that seemed to dictate the heartbeat of the room.
The rest of the guild was actively trying not to look at him too directly. It wasn't born out of raw terror; it was more akin to the instinctive, evolutionary respect a traveler gives a casually sleeping tiger.
Lucy watched him from the absolute corner of her eye. She hadn't actually spoken to him properly yet.
He seemed entirely relaxed, almost aggressively lazy. Yet beneath that slouched, fluid posture lay a coiled, terrifying strength—movements so quiet and weightless that he practically dissolved into the shadows when he didn't want the spotlight.
Also, he had just stolen Gray Fullbuster's underwear mid-sentence without anyone noticing.
Lucy swallowed hard, her throat dry. I should introduce myself... maybe. It's the polite thing to do. Right?
Before she could even begin to gather the necessary courage, Kai's golden eyes shifted. They locked directly onto her.
She froze solid.
His head tilted slightly, his pupils narrowing as if he were studying her. Scanning her. Calculating her exact weight, mass, and threat level.
Then, he pushed off the pillar and began to stroll over.
Lucy felt her heartbeat violently accelerate. Okay, okay—stay calm. He's just another wizard. Just another eccentric guildmate. Just—
"Hey," Kai said, his voice a lazy drawl. He stopped a mere foot away from her stool, hands buried deep in his pockets. "You're the new girl."
Lucy instantly straightened her spine, her voice pitching an octave higher than intended. "Ah—yes! I'm Lucy Heartfilia. It's really, really nice to meet you!"
Kai blinked once. Then, with agonizing slowness, his eyes drifted downward toward her hip. Specifically, they locked onto the leather belt where her set of Celestial Spirit keys hung.
Lucy's survival instincts flared, and she instinctively took a half-step back. "Uh—?"
Kai hummed, a low sound of pure, clinical interest. "Those are... fascinating."
Behind the bar, Mirajane's eyes widened. "Kai!" she shouted, her voice laced with a sharp, maternal warning. "Don't you even think about touching Lucy's—"
Kai was already gone.
It wasn't a blur. It wasn't a flashy burst of speed or a magic circle.
He was just gone.
Lucy blinked, looked down at her empty hip, and let out a horrified gasp.
Her keys were missing.
Instantly, the entire guildhall erupted into absolute chaos.
"DON'T LET HIM TOUCH THEM!!" Macao roared.
"HE'LL TAKE THEM APART FOR SCRAP!!" Wakaba screamed, dropping his pipe.
Kai materialized instantly atop a nearby wooden table, Lucy's ornate keyring dangling carelessly from his index finger. He twirled it like a cheap toy, examining each shimmering key with a hyper-focused fascination that bordered on the deeply obsessive.
"These are... ancient craftsmanship," he muttered to himself, holding a golden key up to the light. "Rough tolerances, under-optimized magical conduits. The gold ones are decent, though. But these silver ones? Man, the mana-flow could definitely be improved with a little bore-tuning..."
Lucy panicked, her hands flying to her hair. "G-Give them back!! Please!! Those are my—!"
He didn't even seem to hear her. Instead, his other hand dipped into his hip pouch, pulling out a chaotic handful of... things.
Wires? Strange metal scraps? A glowing, pulsing etherano crystal? Did the man carry an entire magitech workshop inside a pocket-sized pouch?
The moment he pressed a piece of jagged scrap metal against her keys, Lucy felt the strength entirely leave her knees.
"Oh no, oh no, oh no—!!"
Cana Alberona stood up from her barrel, slamming her mug down. "LUCY, RUN! THAT'S HIS TINKER LOOK! GET OUT OF THE BLAST RADIUS!"
From across the room, Levy McGarden screamed in absolute terror, "THE LAST TIME HE USED THAT FACE, HE MADE A COMPACT BOMB OUT OF A TOASTER!"
Kai turned slightly, his golden eyes entirely blown out with manic engineering excitement. "You are exaggerating, besides perfection requires trials," he murmured, his fingers moving at superhuman speeds.
Lucy looked ready to burst into actual tears. "T-TRIALS?! ON MY LIVES?! ON MY FRIENDS?!"
With a desperate cry, she lunged toward him to snatch her property back. But the moment her fingers closed on the air, Kai moved like pure smoke. It was that terrifying, fluid shadow-monk agility that made him feel entirely intangible. One second he was perched on the table; the next, he was standing directly behind Lucy's left shoulder, his hands a blur of clinking metal.
"No, no, stay still," Kai muttered absently, entirely in the zone. "You're shaking my workspace. If I lose my grip, I might permanently fuse an accidental combustion trigger into the loop."
"THAT MAKES IT A MILLION TIMES WORSE!!" Lucy wailed, her voice cracking as genuine, terrified tears welled in her eyes. "Please, Kai, don't break them! Those are my friends... they're the only thing I have left of my mom!"
The words cut through the tavern's roar.
Kai paused.
His frantic hands instantly stilled. He blinked once, twice, and finally pulled his gaze away from the metal to actually look at her face. He saw the trembling lip. The wide, tear-filled eyes. The raw, genuine terror of a girl about to lose her family.
His intense, manic expression softened into something resembling human empathy.
Slowly—and with deliberate care—he stopped whatever mad science project he was seconds away from executing. His posture relaxed, losing its predatory edge.
With a flick of his wrist, the scraps, wires, and crystals vanished back into the dark recesses of his pouch.
He reached out, gently placing the keyring back into her open, trembling palms.
"Here."
Lucy clutched the cool metal to her chest, letting out a massive, shuddering gasp of pure relief.
Kai shrugged, shoving his hands back into his pockets. "Didn't touch the internal matrix. Just looked."
"Y-You terrified me..." Lucy whispered, aggressively wiping her eyes with her sleeve.
Kai offered her a lopsided, crooked smile—a perfect blend of buried guilt and playful bravado. "Sorry about that. Sometimes I forget normal people don't like their prized possessions casually exploding."
"That is not a valid apology!!" Lucy shouted, her tears instantly converting into exasperated rage.
The guild hall instantly exploded into a unified roar of mocking laughter, the tension evaporating in a heartbeat.
But before Lucy could scold the rogue tinker any further—
BOOM.
The massive front doors of the guild hall were slammed open with such immense force that the hinges groaned in agony.
Loke stumbled inside, his face pale, his sunglasses crooked, shouting at the top of his lungs: "Everyone! Erza is back!"
Instantly, a heavy, suffocating wave of pure magical presence rolled through the hall. It was powerful, commanding, and utterly unmistakable. In a fraction of a second, the entire atmosphere shifted. Natsu and Gray froze mid-snarl, all fighting instantly ceasing.
Lucy turned toward the entrance and felt her breath hitch. She saw the flash of vibrant crimson hair—the gleaming, polished silver armor—and a glare that could freeze a volcano.
Erza Scarlet had returned.
She strode into the hall with absolute authority, effortlessly dragging a massive, horned monster appendage behind her like it weighed less than a feather.
Conversations died on the spot. Veteran wizards froze like statues. Natsu actively tried to compress his entire body behind Happy, while Gray frantically scrambled across the floor in search of his missing trousers.
Erza's sharp eyes scanned the room, taking in the broken tables, the shattered kegs, and the spilled liquor.
"I was gone for a mere few days," Erza began, her voice ringing like a funeral bell, "and I have already received a mountain of complaints on my way back. Property destruction, beating the clients, stealing the local liquor... the list goes on and on."
Her piercing glare swept across the room, pinpointing individuals with surgical precision.
"Elfman, sit down in one place. Macao, Wakaba, stop your incessant drinking and actually take a job to pay your tabs. Loke, cease harassing the local maidens. And Natsu... Gray... where are you?"
"Right here, ma'am!"
Two voices chimed in perfect, terrified unison. To Lucy's absolute, jaw-dropping shock, Natsu and Gray were sitting side-by-side on a bench, smiles plastered onto their faces, their arms wrapped around each other's shoulders like lifelong best friends.
Erza nodded once, a proud, maternal approval softening her stern face. "Good. I see you have finally put a stop to your childish bickering."
Then, inevitably, her eyes locked onto the pillar where Kai was standing.
"Kai."
"Red."
Erza's brow twitched violently, a dangerous vein throbbing near her temple. "Do not call me that."
Kai shrugged, entirely unbothered by the impending doom. "You don't like 'Red'? Come on, it suits you. Fiery. Aggressive. Highly visible in the dark. Great for tactical avoidance."
Erza's glare sharpened into lethal daggers as she took a commanding step forward. "I have told you to use my proper name countless times, yet you deliberately choose to flout protocol. Am I to take this disrespect as a formal challenge, Kairos?"
Kai stretched his arms above his head, letting out a loud, dramatic yawn. "Can we please schedule this argument for later? I already burned through my Delayed Magic allotment for the morning, and my brain is fried."
"You will answer for your attitude now," Erza countered, her heavy boots clicking against the floorboards. "And from what I can gather from the wreckage, you managed to destroy a good half of the guild hall before noon."
"Not a half," Kai corrected casually, wagging a finger. "A third, tops. And honestly, half of that damage was Gray freezing the support beams, and Natsu trying to act like a glorified flamethrower."
The two boys instantly broke their fake friendship pact, leaping to their feet.
"You stole my damn underwear, you absolute freak!" Gray shouted, pointing an accusatory finger.
Natsu growled, his fists igniting. "Yeah! And then you shoved his dirty, unwashed briefs right into my mouth!"
Gray's head snapped toward Natsu, his eyes wild with offense. He immediately slammed his forehead against Natsu's. "What the hell did you just say, flame-brain?! I wash my underwear every single day!"
Natsu shoved back, their teeth gnashing. "Oh yeah?! Then why did it taste like rotten sulfur?! Maybe you should wash your actual body more, you ice stripper!"
"ENOUGH, YOU TWO!" Erza's voice thundered, instantly silencing the duo. "I have heard more than enough to deduce the sequence of events. Kai... are you going to utilize your magic to fix the structural damage you caused, or are you going to shirk your duties?"
Kai ignored her completely, pulling out a handful of brass gears from his pouch and clicking them together, casually waving her off with his free hand. "Yeah, yeah, I'll get to it later. Like I just told you, my Delay Magic is on cooldown."
"Then you will rebuild it with your bare hands, right now," Erza demanded, her hand dropping to the hilt of her sword. "Or else we can settle this the old-fashioned way."
Shiiiing.
The unmistakable sound of drawing steel echoed through the silent hall.
Kai paused his tinkering. He let out a long, dramatic sigh. Then, a slow, incredibly lazy grin spread across his face.
"Fine. But let's keep it sporting. Hand-to-hand. No magical weapons, no fancy requip armor tricks." His golden eyes gleamed with pure, teasing provocation. "Unless, of course... you feel like you need them to keep up with me? If so, I won't judge."
Erza's entire body stiffened.
The surrounding guild members collectively winced, drawing in sharp breaths.
The bait had been perfectly set. The hook had been expertly baited. And Erza Scarlet bit down with the force of a kraken.
"You arrogant, insufferable fool! You think I cannot—?!"
In a flash of blinding light, she requipped instantly into her standard Heart Kreuz armor, lunging forward with a ferocious, blinding down-slash of her blade.
Kai's grin sharpened into a razor's edge.
The fight was on.
The Red Knight vs. The Shadow Monk
Erza swung with terrifying, lethal velocity, but before the edge of her blade could even nick his clothes, Kai's hand blurred. He whipped two tiny, marble-sized pellets from his pouch directly into her path.
"What—?!" Erza growled, her warrior instincts forcing her to leap backward.
The pellets detonated instantly.
The first burst into a blinding, localized flash of pure magnesium-white light, scorching the vision of anyone looking directly at it.
The second detonated not with fire, but with a massive, high-frequency shockwave of concentrated sonic vibrations. The blast rattled Erza's steel breastplate like a struck cathedral gong.
The very air trembled.
Erza's flawless stance broke, her equilibrium shattered as her vision blurred from the ringing in her ears. "W-What—? My balance—!!"
"Improvised gadgetry," Kai's voice echoed smoothly. Suddenly, he was already right in front of her. "I call them Disruption Pellets. patent pending."
Erza's teeth clenched. Relying purely on raw martial instinct, she forced her blurring eyes to lock onto his silhouette, swinging her sword through the haze in a desperate arc.
But Kai was a shadow monk; he didn't fight lines, he fought spaces. He slipped right inside her guard with effortless, liquid fluidity.
Her massive blade descended—only for Kai's left hand to shoot out, perfectly catching her sword-wrist mid-swing, halting its momentum entirely.
Reacting instantly, Erza pivoted her hips, driving her off-hand fist straight toward his jaw.
Clack.
Kai's right hand snapped up, flawlessly snatching that wrist too.
In a single, seamless, devastatingly efficient motion, he stepped deep behind her planted leg and swept her off balance. Erza gasped as the floor disappeared beneath her, her body toppling backward toward the shattered wood.
But she didn't hit the ground.
Kai's iron grip on her wrists held her suspended, pinned safely but firmly, her arched back resting directly against his thigh. They were completely locked in place, faces mere inches apart.
The entire guild hall watched in utterly stunned, breathless silence.
At the bar, Mirajane clasped her hands together, her eyes sparkling. "Oh, my! So romantic!"
Kai barked out a sudden laugh. "Don't make this weird, White!"
Erza's face flushed a deep, furious crimson. "Get off me, you absolute idiot!"
She didn't waste a single millisecond of his distraction. Her armored leg shot upward like a coiled spring, a brutal, heavy kick connecting squarely with Kai's chest.
The sheer kinetic force launched Kai backward across the room, his arms flailing wildly. But instead of crashing into the structural pillars, he twisted his body flawlessly midair. He seemed to defy gravity itself, his form suddenly floating and drifting through the air as weightless as a feather.
He landed softly, tapping his chest to wipe away the dust, a smug smirk on his face.
"Feather Fall enchantment for the win."
He touched down on the floorboards as silently as a piece of falling paper.
The guild instantly cheered at the display of high-tier acrobatics.
Erza stood up, quickly regaining her balance and preparing to lunge again—only to suddenly tilt to the right. She paused, looked down, and realized with a jolt that her entire right armored boot was completely missing.
Across the room, Kai was casually twirling the heavy steel boot around his index finger.
"You know, you really fight a lot better barefoot," he observed helpfully. "Better traction."
Erza's magical aura spiked, a dark, murderous red pressure radiating from her body.
Beside the bar, Lucy grabbed Mirajane's apron, whispering in pure terror, "Who on earth is that woman?!"
Mirajane smiled calmly, wiping down a glass. "That's Erza. One of our elite S-Class mages. She's easily the strongest female wizard in the guild. She utilizes Requip Magic, allowing her to instantly summon and swap between various magical armors and weapons that drastically enhance her physical capabilities."
Lucy's jaw hit the floor. "She's S-Class?! Then... then what about Kai?! Is he an S-Class wizard too?!"
"Oh, goodness no," Mirajane giggled. "Kai isn't S-Class. Rank-wise, he's in the same bracket as Natsu and Gray. He uses a rare form of Tinkering Magic, which allows him to engineer, modify, and construct complex magical gadgets on the fly using whatever materials he has on hand. He's one of the last true Tinker Mages left, which is probably why you've never heard of it. It's also exactly why he was so obsessive about your keys."
Lucy blinked, trying to process the information. "He's... he's not a frontline powerhouse? He's a magical engineer type?"
"Not quite," Mirajane corrected, her smile turning a bit wry. "He was heavily trained in traditional shadow monk styles and clandestine assassin arts. Though, he was officially kicked out of both hidden schools after he broke practically every ancient rule they had, destroying multiple sacred training grounds during his 'product testing' and pranks. Because of that chaotic streak, Master Makarov flatly refuses to promote him to S-Class."
"W-Why?! Is he completely insane?!"
Mirajane let out a soft, fond sigh. "Oh, entirely."
Lucy had absolutely no idea what to do with that information.
"Enough games," Erza growled across the hall. In a brilliant flash of light, a massive ring of gleaming steel swords materialized, orbiting her body like a lethal meat grinder. "I am ending this right now. Requip: Heaven's Wheel!"
She exploded forward, the orbiting swords tracing a deadly storm of steel around her as she closed the distance.
Kai didn't panic. He stepped forward rhythmically, almost dancing, as the heavy cloth wrappings around his forearms began to glow with a faint, abyssal light. They unraveled themselves with a sharp hiss.
"Shadow Style: Wrappings of the Serpent," Kai muttered.
The dark cloth whipped outward, moving like living, flexible vipers. The flying swords clashed violently against the fabric, but instead of shredding the material to ribbons, the blades struck with loud, metallic clangs.
The metal couldn't cut through.
Erza, never one to be easily deterred, immediately adapted. She dove through the swirling vortex of his shadows, intentionally tangling her blades with his rogue fabrics to lock them down. She broke through his defenses, reaching Kai's immediate personal space, and unleashed a ferocious horizontal slash. Kai raised his arms, the remaining wrappings tightening firmly around his forearms as he blocked the razor-sharp edge with a heavy, scraping screech.
Erza's eyes widened in genuine surprise. "I can't slice through cloth?!"
"Shadow Monk wrappings, Red," Kai explained, fluidly weaving through her subsequent follow-up slashes. "As flexible as silk, but woven to be as strong as enchanted diamond-chain mail."
Before Erza could recalculate her strategy, Kai's hand dipped into his pouch again. He mashed several components together in his palm, sparks of unstable magical energy exploding from his knuckles. Erza's combat instincts screamed at her, and she immediately tried to leap backward to establish distance—but she was a fraction of a second too late.
"Tinkering Arts: Improvised Gadgetry—Spring-Coil Binds!"
Kai hurled a cluster of metallic pellets directly at her retreating form.
Erza swung her sword with flawless precision, slicing cleanly through several of the pellets midair before they could deploy. But as she moved to slash the final one, a cold dread washed over her. Her spatial awareness flared.
She spun on her heel, slashing blindly behind her.
CLANG.
Her blade struck Kai's reinforced forearms. He had completely vanished from her front, utilizing the distraction to shadow-step directly into her blind spot.
Kai grinned, genuinely impressed. "You actually sensed my shadow-step. Phenomenal reaction time, Red."
Erza didn't waste breath on banter. She rushed him instantly, bringing her sword down in a brutal, low-angled sweep from the left. Kai dropped his weight entirely, planting his right hand onto the floorboards and throwing his body flat as the blade whistled inches above him.
The very next millisecond, his left leg shot straight upward in a vicious handstand-kick aimed directly at Erza's jaw. She managed to cross her armored forearms to absorb the blow, but the raw, concentrated force behind the strike violently propelled her backward several feet.
Erza recovered her footing instantly, refusing to give him a single moment to stand up. She surged forward again, but Kai simply chose to remain on the floor, spinning into a vicious sweep-kick aimed at her remaining booted ankle.
Erza leaped clean over the sweeping leg, using her downward momentum to drive her armored heel straight down toward his chest like a pile-driver.
Kai countered instantly, thrusting his own foot upward to meet hers.
BOOM!
The soles of their boots clashed in a devastating explosion of kinetic pressure, shattering the floorboards beneath them. Kai's knee bent slightly under the immense downward weight of her armor, but he expertly channeled the force, rolling backward across the floor and popping back up into a low, agile crouch.
But the moment he rose, Erza was already waiting. She drove a brutal, straight-line kick directly into his ribs. Kai managed to cross his arms over his chest in a desperate guard, but the sheer, unbridled S-Class strength of the blow launched him like a cannonball.
He flew backward, violently plowing through a row of wooden tables before collapsing into a heavy, motionless heap of debris.
Erza stood in the center of the clearing, drawing in a deep, heavy breath, satisfied with finally landing a clean hit. But in her brief moment of recovery, she failed to notice several dark, snake-like cloth wrappings slithering silently across the floor behind her.
Without warning, the cloth coiled tightly around her ankles, snapping shut like steel bear traps.
Erza's eyes went wide. "Tch—!"
She frantically brought her sword down to sever them, but more dark tendrils whipped out from the shadows, wrapping around her wrists and pinning her arms securely to her sides. The bindings didn't cause pain, but they perfectly locked down her muscle groups, entirely cutting off her movement.
"Break—!" Erza strained, her magical aura flaring as she tried to force her way out through sheer strength.
In a literal blink of an eye, the pile of debris exploded, and Kai materialized directly in front of her. His clothes were slightly torn, a few fresh bruises marking his skin, his messy bangs falling wildly over his golden eyes.
He didn't hesitate for a single second. He brought a lightning-fast, rigid knife-hand strike straight down onto her right bicep.
Thud. Her right arm instantly went entirely numb and limp.
Before she could even register the sensation, his left hand blurred, delivering a perfectly placed pressure-point chop to her left bicep, disabling her remaining arm. He followed the flow of motion instantly, pivoting his body to drive a heavy, ringing right elbow strike right near her ear.
Erza's vision violently blurred, her equilibrium completely shot.
Then, Kai's foot rose swiftly from below.
CRACK.
A perfectly executed, clean upward kick connected directly with her chin, launching Erza's armored body high into the air.
The entire guild gasped in collective horror as they watched the unstoppable Titania spin helplessly through the rafters.
In a flash of pure speed, Kai shadow-stepped into the air above her, flipping gracefully through the sky. His right leg extended fully, descending like a falling meteor.
"ECHO STRIKE—AXE KICK!"
His heel landed squarely in her midsection with a hollow, devastating thud, instantly followed by a strange, delayed secondary kinetic shockwave that rippled through her armor out of nowhere.
Erza's body violently spasmed from the numbing, internal resonance of the attack. She shot downward like a crimson missile, crashing violently through a heavy oak table and rattling the literal foundations of the guild hall.
As the thick dust settled over the crater, an anxious, terrified silence fell over the arena. Everyone held their breath, terrified for Erza's well-being.
But within seconds, a hand slammed against the floor. Erza was already pushing herself up out of the wreckage, aggressively shaking the residual numbness out of her limbs with fierce, unbreakable willpower.
Kai descended lightly from the air, landing perfectly beside her crater. He was casually holding her heavy steel sword in his right hand.
"Hmm. Hey, Red," he mused thoughtfully, balancing the blade on his palm. "How much do you think this would fetch on the black market as premium scrap metal?"
Every single vein on Erza Scarlet's forehead violently bulged at the exact same time.
"KAAAAAAAAAIIIIII—!!"
She charged blindly, unleashing a furious, swordless left fist fueled by pure, unadulterated rage. Kai stood perfectly still, not moving an inch until the fist was a mere millimeter from his nose.
Her knuckles punched straight through his face—only for his image to ripple like water.
A shadow?! Erza realized with a jolt of panic.
But she wasn't given a single second to reposition. Kai materialized like a phantom right beside her flank.
His knee shot forward, burying itself deep into her stomach, completely knocking the remaining wind right out of her lungs. Before she could fall, his foot smoothly swept behind her heel, pivoting his hips with flawless martial grace.
He leaned in close, his voice a low, teasing whisper right in her ear.
"Gear up, Red. This one's for the kick you gave me while I was down."
Erza's eyes widened as she realized exactly what was coming.
WHACK.
Kai's heavy boot connected squarely, flawlessly, with the absolute center of her backside.
BOOM!
Erza was launched forward horizontally like a human rocket, tumbling head-over-heels through a consecutive row of tables before finally coming to a halt.
Lucy screamed in terror. Natsu choked on his own spit. Gray winced, covering his own backside out of pure psychological sympathy. Cana roared with triumphant approval, waving her betting slip in the air. Mirajane simply sighed softly, dabbing her face with a pristine white bar towel.
The dust slowly settled.
Erza lay face-down in the ruins of the furniture. Slowly, deliberately, she pushed herself back up to her feet.
In the final split-second before the impact, she had managed to partially requip into a new set of armor, saving herself from any actual injury. But she was entirely barefoot. Her crimson hair was wild and tangled. And the heavy steel plate of her new armor was prominently dented in the unmistakable shape of Kai's boot print.
Her face was an absolute picture of silent, apocalyptic wrath.
Lucy gulped hard, shrinking back. "That... that is the face of a woman actively trying not to commit first-degree murder," she whispered.
Kai simply shoved his hands back into his pockets, completely nonchalant. "Good match."
Erza pointed a trembling, gauntleted finger at him, her voice shaking with pure, unbridled fury. "Kai... you... are... absolutely... insufferable!"
Kai offered his trademark, lazy smile. "Thank you."
"THAT WAS NOT A COMPLIANCE-EARNING COMPLIMENT!"
"I don't know, you sounded pretty impressed to me," Kai said, casually rolling his neck until it popped.
"I WAS NOT—!!" Erza shrieked, looking a single breath away from burning the entire town to ash.
Then, with an immense, monumental effort of self-control, she let out a long, aggressive sigh, brushing the wood shavings off her armor. She turned toward the stairs, her posture rigid. "I am going to take a long, thorough shower before I deal with your punishment properly."
Kai yawned. "Sure thing. We can always go another round later."
Erza froze dead on the steps. She didn't turn around, but her shoulders slumped slightly.
"...I hate how accurately you utilize that word 'later'."
Kai simply winked.
Erza marched up the stairs to the sanctuary of the living quarters, radiating a terrifying aura of barely-contained rage, heavily laced with a reluctant, deeply buried martial respect.
Aftermath
Lucy sank heavily onto her barstool, her hands still clutching her precious Celestial keys tightly to her chest.
"Kai is... he is an absolute lunatic," she whispered to the empty air.
Mirajane let out a soft, melodious giggle, sliding a fresh drink over. "Oh, don't worry about it too much. You get used to him after a while."
Lucy stared blankly at the utter devastation around them. The shattered oak tables. The scattered magical swords. The lingering scent of ozone. She vividly remembered the perfect boot-shaped dent in Erza's armor, and Kai calmly humming to himself as he walked away like nothing had happened.
"No," Lucy said, shaking her head with absolute, unwavering certainty. "No normal human being ever gets used to that."
Mirajane smiled warmly, her eyes crinkling with genuine affection for her chaotic family.
"We all did."
