Chapter 702 - 702: Fragmented World

"D…"

Several pairs of eyes instantly shifted, their expressions deepening with emotion.

"D…"

"So he's already uncovered that secret?"

What appeared to be an ordinary letter to most people now stirred something profound in those who understood its hidden significance.

"…."

Red-Haired Shanks' expression remained unreadable. Neither joy nor sorrow showed, only a heavy stillness, like a storm hidden beneath a vast ocean.

"Gol D. Roger… our captain was the most well known among those who inherited the Will of D," Shanks said quietly, his voice carrying a restrained weight.

A faint sigh escaped him and dissolved into the air.

"Maybe it was because he went too far in uncovering the truth the World Government wanted buried, and understood the meaning behind the name D, that he became a direct threat to their foundation."

"That's why he had to die."

"And why they made sure he died by their hands."

"A warning to anyone still chasing the meaning of D despite the purges and the silence they enforce."

"The D Clan…"

Jinbe's expression tightened slightly as he repeated the words.

It was not unfamiliar to him. He had heard it before during his time with Whitebeard, often in moments of drunken reflection.

After all, two members of Whitebeard's crew carried that middle name.

Fire Fist, Portgas D. Ace.

Blackbeard, Marshall D. Teach.

"Whitebeard, my father…"

A trace of sadness surfaced in Jinbe's eyes as memories returned.

"Gurarararara… Roger that fool really told me something interesting before he went out. About the meaning of D in his name…"

Even hooked up to an IV, Whitebeard would ignore the nurses' protests and drink freely from massive bowls of sake.

"Father, that kind of thing isn't important," Jinbe had said back then, seated formally in his yukata and geta. A full bowl of sake sat untouched in front of him.

"Your health matters more. You've been getting weaker. Drinking like this will only make things worse."

Even the strongest body in the world could not escape time.

It was a blade no one could deflect.

"Gulp… gulp…"

Whitebeard finished another bowl and exhaled deeply.

"Refreshing!!!"

Even as age and illness eroded him, his presence remained overwhelming. He set the empty bowl down and laughed heartily.

"Jinbe, if I can't even drink anymore, what's the point of living like a broken old man?"

"Gurarararara!!!"

"I'd rather burn everything I have in one final fight than rot away quietly for a hundred years in a bed."

A faint, almost bitter smile crossed his face.

"Maybe that's why that fool chose to die the way he did…"

"Roger… that damned man."

"Even in death, he made sure the whole world saw it. He burned everything just to open a new path, to give people a different choice in this suffocating world."

"Are all the people who carry the Will of D like that… stubborn beyond reason?"

"…."

"Ah! D, the D Clan?!"

Usopp's voice suddenly cracked as he stared at Shirogai with wide eyes, his tongue trembling slightly.

"Wait, isn't that the same letter in Luffy's name? Don't tell me Luffy is actually connected to some legendary, super famous, barely-known legendary clan?!"

"Hehe, that's right, Usopp," Shirogai replied casually.

"When we talked at night, I mentioned it. Luffy is indeed one of the inheritors of the Will of D. The thing is, many of them don't even know what it truly means."

He smiled faintly, as if revealing something the World Government would erase without hesitation.

"To them, it's just a name. A meaningless D they carry without understanding it. That ignorance lets them walk freely under the World Government's eyes."

"The Celestial Dragons are arrogant."

"In their eyes, as long as those people don't understand the meaning behind D, they're just ants with a letter in their name."

"Luffy's name is Monkey D. Luffy…"

Robin's gaze lowered slightly as she thought.

"His grandfather is Monkey D. Garp, and his father is Monkey D. Dragon…"

"They likely don't know the true meaning of D either."

"That's why the World Government allows them to live."

"But that also means there are far more D bearers than we think…"

Her thoughts darkened for a moment as memories resurfaced.

Explosions.

Fire.

Entire islands erased.

Pain tightened in her chest.

The World Government never hesitated.

Not when erasing history.

Not when erasing people.

"After all," Shirogai's voice continued, interrupting her thoughts, "if there were only a few of them, they would have been wiped out completely already."

"Even if they don't understand the meaning of D, it doesn't matter to the World Government."

"They cut everything at the root."

BOOM.

BOOM.

The memory of ships exploding echoed in Robin's mind like it had happened yesterday.

She closed her eyes briefly, biting her lip.

"They are very efficient at erasing things."

"Even if innocent people are caught in it, they don't hesitate."

"Only when the number of D bearers becomes too large to erase completely do they shift away from mass slaughter."

She paused.

Then shook her head slightly.

"No…"

"Maybe they already did erase many of them."

"Maybe the ones left are already what survived that purge."

Usopp scratched his head, looking confused.

"So Luffy doesn't even know what it means?"

He glanced toward the distance where Luffy was still engaged in battle.

"Should I go call him? This sounds like something he should hear, right?"

Shirogai shook his head lightly.

"No need. It's not difficult to explain."

"Let him finish what he's doing first."

"Alright! Then just tell me quickly!" Usopp leaned in immediately.

"This D thing, or Will of D, what is it exactly?!"

Under the attention of everyone present, Shirogai looked upward slightly and smiled.

"In the long course of history, people have given the Will of D many meanings."

"The courage to resist without compromise."

"The will to stand back up again and again."

"The refusal to retreat."

"The justice of the weak challenging oppression."

"But those are interpretations created later by people."

"The original meaning is much simpler."

He raised his hand.

A glowing blue sphere formed in the air above them, suspended like a living world.

It rotated slowly, perfect and whole.

Then, with a sharp fracture sound, a dark force split it cleanly into two halves.

The sphere shattered into a broken world.

"This is what D represents."

Shirogai's voice lowered, steady and clear.

"The inheritors of D carry a warning within their names."

"This world… is incomplete."

"All who bear D are also incomplete."

"Their existence reflects a fractured world."

"Their purpose is to restore it."

"To bring what was split apart back together."

"To defeat division itself."

"To remove the fractures that separate everything."

"Their goal…"

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"…is reunion."

A brief silence followed.

Then his voice concluded with finality.

"To take this broken world…"

"This home they live in…"

"And make it whole again."
