Chapter 93 - 93

John moved low, his center of gravity shifting. He transitioned from a Crane-style snap-kick into a grounded Tiger-sweep, his blood pressure spiking in his legs to provide the torque needed to shatter stone. When Ra's leaped over the sweep, John used the centrifugal force to spring upward, his palm hot with a faint, internal heat as he aimed a heart-stopping strike at Ra's mid-air.

"Impressive," Ra's breathed, his own hand snapping out to catch John's wrist. The impact rang out loud.

John didn't respond with words. He used the momentum of the caught wrist to pivot his entire body, his free hand slicing through the air in a spear-hand strike that stopped a mere hair's breadth from Ra's jugular.

They stood frozen for a heartbeat, the new Grandmaster and the Demon Head. John's breathing hadn't even quickened. His eyes remained as cold and clear as a pond, his body perfectly regulated and ready for the next hundred moves.

Ra's looked at the hand at his throat, then up at John. A slow, genuine smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth.

"You have surpassed the assessment, John. You are no longer just a weapon of the League. You are becoming a master of yourself."

John drew his hand back, the hum of his Chi receding into a calm, internal reservoir. He settled into a neutral stance at the side of the room, "You flatter me," he said, his voice a steady. "I still have much to learn."

"That you do," Ra's replied, his gaze finally softening to that of a mentor. "But you have years, perhaps centuries, if you play your cards right, to do exactly that."

Ra's raised a hand in a slow, commanding gesture. Even in his serene state, John felt a flicker of genuine shock. Without Ra's touching it, the discarded silk cloak on the floor stirred, lifting into the air as if caught in a localized gale. It floated gracefully back to his hand, and he draped it over his scarred shoulders with the ease.

"As I said, you have surpassed the League's assessments," Ra's continued, the fabric of his robe settling around him. "We can no longer justify treating you as a trainee, nor as some average grunt. A Grandmaster is a rare commodity, John. To treat you as anything less would be a waste of your potential and mine."

He turned fully toward John, his presence filling the empty room. "The League would like to establish a formal cooperation with you. A partnership of equals where both sides can benefit from the other's strengths. You must have goals, and I have the resources to see them realized."

Ra's stepped closer, his eyes searching John's. "What do you think of this proposal?"

The temptation to decline was a sharp, cold itch in the back of John's mind. Part of him wanted to walk out those doors and never look back, to sever his ties with the League's bloody shadow once and for all. But he wasn't a fool. The moment he uttered a refusal would be the moment his life expectancy dropped to zero. If he fell here, his secret, his nature as an Ajin would be dissected and exposed to a world that would never let him be free again.

Besides, the League was a mountain of resources. The capital, the influence, and the sheer reach of Ra's al Ghul's empire were assets he could use to fuel his own endgame.

"My loyalty lies with the League," John said in a practiced tone. "I will assist in whatever way I can."

Ra's met his statement with an unblinking stare. It wasn't a look of belief or disbelief, it was the look of a man who saw through the bullshit said.

"Your metahuman gift has been thoroughly assessed," Ra's said, moving back toward the balcony. "It is a variable that the League finds... highly advantageous."

John felt a slight tightening in his chest. He had been careful, or so he thought.

"We have observed your pastinteractions with your fellow apprentices," Ra's continued, his back to John once more. "We saw how you used your gift to give them an edge, pushing their limits so they could grasp the complexities of our martial arts at an accelerated rate."

He turned his head slightly, a smile appearing. "Because of your guidance, the percentage of apprentices showing elite potential has spiked. You are inadvertently creating a new foundation for my future inner circle." as he said this words, he kept his eyes on John looking for something.

Ra's remained silent for a beat, his frustration simmering just beneath his composed exterior. He found it increasingly vexing that he could find no crack in John's armor, the boy's constant state of adrenal-enforced serenity made him unreadable. It was a perfect tactical defense, one that even the Demon Head found difficult to pierce.

Perhaps sensing the weight of Ra's prolonged, searching stare, John finally broke the silence. "Your observations hold true, Demon Head," he said, his voice smooth. "However, I should mention that this "guidance" comes at a heavy physiological cost. The energy drain on the subject is immense."

Ra's dismissed the concern with a sharp, impatient wave of his hand. "We are well aware of the toll," he countered. "The League is more than capable of providing the necessary resources, energy-rich diets and alchemical supplements in exchange for elite ninjas who can suddenly glimpse the profound mysteries of Chi through your lens."

He turned fully toward John, his eyes burning with a sudden, dark intensity.

"Which is why, boy, I am appointing you to take over Torren's position. You will serve as the High Instructor. You will lead and guide the new generations to come, forging the sharpest blades the League has ever known."

Ra's voice, usually cold and calculating, took on a rare, passionate edge as he spoke the final words. "You will be the architect of the strength the League needs for its ultimate growth. You will create an army of masters."

John didn't care for the grand speeches or the "destiny" of the League. Instead, he cleared his throat with a slight, awkward cough that broke the heavy atmosphere of the room. "I would like to know... if the pay is good."

In a practiced bid to mask his true intentions with a layer of relatable loyalty, he added, "I will do my best for the League, of course. But I have a dog to feed, and he has an expensive appetite. I would also like to eventually find my own place, something beyond the borders of this island..."

"Half a million every week," Ra's said, cutting John off before he could trail off into any more fabricated excuses.

The words hit John like a physical force. Without a second of hesitation, he dropped back down to one knee. "When do I start?" he asked, his voice remaining its signature, icy monotone despite his current reaction.

Ra's looked down at the kneeling boy, a flicker of genuine bewilderment crossing his ancient features. This was a child who had just fought the Demon Head to a standstill, a Grandmaster of the martial arts, and yet he was moved so easily by currency? "You may start whenever you feel you are ready," Ra's replied slowly.
