Chapter 90 - 90

"Apprentice John," Torren's voice carried an edge of curiosity. "Why have you broken your mission objective?"

In response, John didn't speak. He simply hoisted the heavy, cloth-wrapped bundle and tossed it forward. The driver caught it mid-air with practiced ease. A heavy silence settled over the car as the ninja began to methodically unwrap the layers of fabric. When the final layer fell away, the severed head of John's mentor was revealed, pale and sightless in the dim light of the cabin.

"I completed my mission," John said, his voice flat. "I found no further need to waste time in the city. Since I had no way to contact get in contact directly, I forced your hand. I knew you would come to me."

Having delivered his report, John leaned back into the leather seat and closed his eyes, the exhaustion of the week finally catching up to him.

"I see," Torren replied through the speakers.

There were no further questions. The tinted glass partition slid back up, once again isolating John in the rear of the vehicle. He remained motionless, showing no reaction even as a thick, sweet-smelling white smoke began to hiss from the vents, rapidly filling the back seat.

John briefly considered resisting the sedative's effects, his mind was already sharp enough to fight it but he ultimately found the effort unnecessary. There was no point in struggling against the inevitable. As his consciousness began to fray at the edges, he felt the heavy vibration of the limousine's engine as it pulled away, merging into the city traffic.

When John finally opened his eyes, his expression remained characteristically calm. He expected the cold, familiar stone of a cell within the League's subterranean compound, but the reality was jarringly different. He was lying in a sprawling, five-star Japanese suite. The air smelled of polished cedar and expensive incense.

Looking down at the silk sheets, his brow furrowed. There, curled up and sleeping soundly beside him, was Dog.

Stunned by the domesticity of the scene, John stood up, his mind racing to reconcile his expectations with this luxury. He began to pace through the suite, his footsteps silent on the tatami mats. His first instinct was to confirm his location, and he moved toward the far window with a sense of dread.

He hesitated before pulling back the screen. He wasn't sure he could handle the psychological blow of being dumped in yet another unfamiliar city.

Taking a breath, he slid the window open. To his immense relief, he wasn't in a foreign land. He was looking out from a high-altitude pagoda, perched over a landscape he knew by heart.

Far below, he could see the sprawling dirt and stone of his former training grounds. As he panned his gaze across the horizon, he realized where he was, he had been brought to the towering, elite structures that loomed behind the compound, the buildings he had only been able to catch glimpses of during his grueling years as a low-level recruit.

"Woof!"

The sharp bark broke the silence of the suite. Dog, no longer the small pup John remembered, but a lean, powerful animal sprinted toward him, his tail thumping against the floor in a frantic rhythm of recognition. John stared at the animal for a long moment, a flicker of hesitation crossing his face. Slowly, he sank to one knee and reached out, his hand finally meeting the coarse fur. A rare, genuine smile broke through his usual mask as he patted the dog's head.

"Let's go," John said.

Dog seemed to understand perfectly, immediately falling into step at his side as John stood and moved toward the exit. He reached the sliding shoji doors and pushed them aside, stepping out into a wide, polished corridor.

The change in his status was immediate and visible. Every few yards, ninjas stood like statues, their presence silent and imposing. They didn't move to intercept him or demand a password, they simply remained at attention as he passed.

John kept his muscles tense, his senses dialed to their highest frequency, half-expecting a sudden test or an ambush. But the further he walked, the more the pieces of the puzzle clicked into place.

The League wasn't stupid. By now, they would have analyzed his performance, his efficiency, and the trophy he had brought back. They had likely deduced that he had reached the level of a Grandmaster.

Logically, his days as a disposable apprentice were over. This luxury, this height, and the lack of shackles all pointed to a new reality.

He wouldn't be surprised if his next destination wasn't a debriefing room, but a direct audience with Ra's al Ghul himself. The League was ready to discuss his future and exactly what path they expected him to carve for them.

The thought of this made him pause. He knew the inner workings of the League better than most, every ninja they trained underwent a rigorous, years-long process of indoctrination. It was a systematic breaking of the will, designed to ensure absolute, unquestioning loyalty to the League and the Demon's Head.

But John was an anomaly. His growth had been too explosive, his ascent too rapid for that slow-dripping poison of brainwashing to take hold. He had surpassed the "apprentice" stage before they could even finish his initial conditioning.

That left the League with a very different set of options.

He realized he was being moved into the same tier as the top-level contractors, elite masters like Lady Shiva or Deathstroke. They were legends who operated within the League's orbit but were never truly "owned" by it. Their loyalty only manifested when their personal goals aligned with the League's, or when the price was right.

It was a path of cooperation rather than servitude. It meant he would be a free agent under the League's banner, occasionally stepping in to solve their most impossible problems, but ultimately remaining the master of his own life and path.

John mused, his hand resting on Dog's head as they continued down the silent hallway.

If this was the hand he was being dealt, he would play it. He would take the autonomy they were offering and use the League's vast resources to further his own ends, just as they intended to use him for theirs.

John's steady pace came to a sudden halt at the sound of multiple soft, synchronized footsteps approaching from around the corner. The ninja guards remained like statues, their lack of reaction signaling that those approaching were authorized personnel. A moment later, a small group of maids appeared.

They were the same women who had attended to the recruits during the earliest, most grueling days of his training. When they saw John standing there, their professional masks slipped into expressions of genuine surprise.

"You are awake, Master John," one of them said, bowing low.

John offered no verbal reply, his gaze cold and observant as he tracked their movements.

The head maid looked him up and down, noting the alertness in his stature. "We were assigned to attend to you, Master, and were on our way to your quarters." She gestured to the folded silks and fine linens carried by the others. "We have fresh clothes for you and were ordered to brief you on your upcoming meeting with the Demon's Head."
