Chapter 13 - chapter 13

Balcony Night – Love Between the Lines

Location: Stark Tower – Executive Penthouse Balcony

Time: Four weeks after rescue

The New York skyline shimmered in the dark like a sea of stars reflected in concrete. Wind whispered across the balcony as Toni Stark stood barefoot, sipping scotch from a crystal glass, arc reactor glowing faintly under a silk blouse.

Behind her, the doors slid open.

Lance. Dressed in black. Golden curls tousled. His white-and-gold suit—the one she was designing—rested on a nearby mannequin, the prototype gleaming in the moonlight.

He didn't speak immediately. He stood next to her, hands behind his back, as if he might scare her with too much presence.

Toni (quietly):

"I can't sleep. Every time I close my eyes, I hear the sound of hammers on scrap metal… and screaming."

Lance:

"You don't have to talk about it if it hurts."

She turned to face him, her eyes glassy but defiant.

Toni:

"Pain makes it real. You saved me… again. And all I did was fight you on everything for years. My pride. My fear. My walls."

She stepped closer, setting the glass down. Her hand reached for his chest—just above his heart.

Toni:

"Why did you come for me, Lance? Not just as the President. As you."

His jaw tightened. He looked away, then back at her, fiercely.

Lance:

"Because when the world burns, your voice is the one I want calling my name. Because I can't breathe when you're not in it."

She leaned in—hesitated—then kissed him softly. Their lips brushed like paper before catching fire.

Their bodies pressed together, urgent but careful.

Toni (between kisses):

"I always said I liked girls… but maybe I was lying to myself."

Lance:

"I don't care who you thought you were. I care who you are… now."

She pulled him down, their foreheads resting together, breathless.

Toni:

"If we go further tonight… you need to know something."

He nodded.

Toni:

"I'm not okay yet. I'm still broken in places. But when I look at you—I want to believe I can heal."

He cupped her cheek gently, eyes burning with quiet reverence.

Lance:

"Then let me be your peace."

She kissed him again—slower this time. Not lust. Something raw. Something real.

And in the stillness of that kiss, they both understood: they weren't alone anymore.

🧠 Scene 5: The Psychic Mirror – Therapy With Charles Xavier

Location: X-Mansion – Charles Xavier's Private Study

Time: Six weeks after rescue

Toni Stark sat stiffly across from Professor Charles Xavier, his warm, paternal eyes taking her in as he sipped tea.

The room smelled like leather and books, ancient wisdom grounded in familiarity.

Charles Xavier:

"You haven't truly stopped moving since your return. Building, designing, deflecting. Avoidance is a valid trauma response… but unsustainable."

Toni (biting):

"Let me guess—you want me to lie down and talk about my father?"

Charles (softly):

"I want you to talk about you. The you who was locked in a cave. The you who lost control. The you who's afraid to look in the mirror."

She looked away, then back at him, eyes fierce—but crumbling.

Toni:

"Fine. I'll tell you what I see: a woman who sold weapons to monsters. Who thought she was too smart to get hurt. Who now jumps at the sound of a wrench."

She leaned forward, breathing hard.

Toni:

"I panic in elevators. I can't stand the dark. I flinch when someone raises their voice. And Lance… he looks at me like I'm a goddess, but I feel like a rusted-out husk."

Xavier nodded slowly.

Charles:

"That's not weakness. That's trauma. And trauma doesn't disqualify you from love. It means you survived something that should've killed you."

Tears welled in her eyes, unbidden. She didn't stop them.

Toni (whispers):

"I thought I was going to die. Alone. Unloved. And all I could think about… was him. Not the company. Not the armor. Just… Lance."

Charles:

"Then let that love be a lighthouse. Not a burden."

He reached out, gently touching her temple.

Charles (telepathically):

You're not broken, Toni. You're rebuilding. And there is strength in rebuilding yourself by choice, not fear.

The connection ended. She gasped softly, eyes wide.

Toni:

"...Thank you, Charles."

Charles (smiling):

"Go home, Toni. Build your armor. Build your heart. And let someone hold it without needing to fix it."
