By afternoon the rumor began leaking toward the other major hidden villages—Konoha had plenty of spies, and this kind of news didn't require deep digging to verify.
In Amegakure, in the Land of Rain, White Zetsu's report reached Konan. She made her way to the high tower where Deva Path Pain waited.
"The Nine-Tails Jinchuriki is Uzumaki Naruto," Deva Path Pain said, getting straight to the point.
"How do you know?"
Konan's pupils tightened; the question slipped out before she could stop it.
"The news just came in. Sasori has been captured."
The Deva Path of Pain paused. "The ones who caught him were Kitazawa and Uzumaki Naruto."
"What?"
Konan's heart skipped. Surprise washed across her face.
"Although Kitazawa was there, he didn't make the catch. It was Uzumaki Naruto who used a partial tailed beast transformation to take Sasori down."
Hearing that, Konan immediately understood why Pain knew Naruto was the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki.
"Since we now know Uzumaki Naruto is the Nine-Tails' Jinchūriki, don't return to Konoha," the Deva Path said calmly. "They'll start another round of arrests right away. At that point, the Akatsuki will become the enemy of the shinobi world."
Konan ground her teeth. For a moment her thoughts scattered; she didn't know how to answer. Plans couldn't keep pace with such sudden changes. She had intended to use the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki to stall for another half year so she could stay with Kitazawa and savor their last moments. She hadn't expected Kitazawa to bring Naruto against Sasori.
"What's wrong?" Pain asked again, noting her silence.
"Nothing." Konan shook her head. "Go then."
Pain didn't press it. "Notify me immediately if there's any news about capturing the Tailed Beasts."
"I understand," Konan replied and turned to leave.
Outside, as she walked down the street, the cool composure she usually wore peeled away into a dazed expression. The next time she saw Kitazawa, they might be facing each other with blades drawn. She sighed and made for her room.
She opened the door and froze for a moment. Then her face shifted, and worry creased her brow.
"I used the Flying Thunder God ," Kitazawa chuckled. "Don't worry, no one can find me."
Nagato's sensory jutsu required rain, but Kitazawa's Flying Thunder God could bypass that constraint. Konan felt faint relief—she had thought of that too.
"Come here," Kitazawa beckoned.
She went to him and sat on his lap, leaning against his chest. She tucked her long legs close, pressing sideways into him.
"You look like you have something on your mind," he said, catching a faint scent from her.
"I... my mission is complete. I won't be returning to Konoha anymore." Konan hesitated two seconds, then spoke honestly.
"It's fine. I can come here." Kitazawa patted her thigh. "You don't need to worry about such things."
"Thank you." The words lifted something inside Konan; she felt lighter.
"Is your Akatsuki going to move against all the jinchūriki next?" Kitazawa's right hand slid up her thigh.
"Mm." She felt a chill across her chest but kept her expression steady.
"After you've captured the first eight jinchūriki, help me arrange a duel with your leader." Kitazawa's fingers toyed with the skin between them.
"What?" Konan trembled.
"I'm straightforward," Kitazawa said casually. "If your leader is truly powerful, I'll surrender."
"Really?" Konan looked at him, disbelief plain in her eyes. Kitazawa didn't seem the kind to give up easily.
"Why would I lie to you?" he asked. "Our Akatsuki's goal isn't to destroy the shinobi world."
"If Konoha hands over the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki, I can guarantee your safety," Konan said impatiently. It wasn't a lie. Nagato's Eye of the Moon Plan differed from Obito's—Nagato's plan, more accurately the Tailed Beast Deterrence Plan, was to gather the tailed beasts as a deterrent so nations would think twice before starting wars. Compared to Obito's plan to trap the world in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Nagato's idea was less monstrous. It was difficult to realize, though—unless Obito and Black Zetsu were dealt with. Nagato alone couldn't handle them, but Kitazawa could. Kitazawa had his own plan: take control of Akatsuki, collect the nine tailed beasts, then deal with the other hidden villages.
"Thank you." Kitazawa squeezed her toned ass. Konan's breath hitched, and a flush rose to her cheeks. She suddenly straightened, clothes falling to the floor and leaving her exposed to the air. Instinctively, she sat on his lap facing him and hugged Kitazawa's head to her chest. He felt soft, warm, and fragrant. He placed his hands at her waist as he lowered Konan onto the bed and got out of his clothes.
The next day, Kitazawa returned to Konoha. Naruto's fame had already eclipsed that of Sasori of the Red Sand. More surprising was the new title circulating—the Dragon of Konoha—no doubt born from the terrifying sight of that swarm of green, giant dragons tied to the Konoha Dragon God. Kitazawa resolved to get his other two students known quickly; otherwise, producing a new Konoha Sannin might not happen.
January drew to a close.
The past fortnight had left the Ninja World anything but calm. First came the Hidden Sand: Fourth Kazekage Rasa lay gravely wounded, and the One-Tail Jinchūriki Gaara had been captured. Had Kitazawa and Uzumaki Naruto not intervened in time, Chiyo and Gaara would have fallen too. News of Uzumaki Naruto's victory over Sasori spread across the shinobi nations like wildfire.
Next was the Hidden Mist. The village had two Jinchūriki—Three-Tails' host Yagura and Six-Tails' host Utakata—and the Akatsuki sent four members to take them; after a fierce battle, both were seized. Finally, the Hidden Stone: Four-Tails' Jinchūriki Roshi had been returned to Iwagakure after Kitazawa's capture of him, but ongoing conflict with Ōnoki drove him from the village, and the Akatsuki took him that same week.
The Akatsuki's relentless hunts for the Tailed Beasts laid bare their intentions and put every major village on high alert. They rushed to protect their Jinchūriki and prepared for war, but no one wanted to expose themselves—none truly knew the Akatsuki's strength. All the Great Ninja Villages flooded the shadows with spies to learn more. Only Konoha stood still—on Kitazawa's orders.
That turmoil never reached the Ninja Academy. The Genius Class attended lessons as usual; only Naruto had changed. His sudden fame left Sasuke and the others bristling with envy.
In Konoha's Forest of Death, Kitazawa trained the Wood Release: Golem. Footsteps came up behind him.
"Lord Kitazawa," ANBU Antelope bowed slightly. "We've just received word from Director Yakushi Nono: Gaara has regained consciousness."
"Understood. Dismissed." Kitazawa nodded.
The moment Antelope left, Kitazawa vanished with the Flying Thunder God and reappeared at Konoha Hospital. A sharp, murderous intent greeted him outside Gaara's ward. He pushed the door open without hurry.
Gaara was strapped to the bed, eyes bloodshot, thrashing against his bindings. The murderous aura was locked on Yakushi Nono, who was treating him. When Gaara saw Kitazawa, that same bloodthirst turned toward him.
"Nono-senpai, I'll handle this," Kitazawa smiled.
Nono gave a small nod and left.
"You want to kill me? I went to great lengths to save you," Kitazawa asked.
Gaara met his gaze, calm. "I live to kill!"
"So you're confident in your strength?"
Gaara showed no change. "Absolutely."
"Then how did you end up like this? Even Shukaku was extracted." Kitazawa pressed the point.
Gaara froze, words failing him.
"Your strength is nothing special," Kitazawa chuckled. "In Konoha, plenty of your age can beat you."
"Impossible!" Gaara snapped. Losing to Sasori was one thing—Sasori was stronger, more experienced, and had the Third Kazekage's backup. Losing to peers, he refused to accept.
Kitazawa saw the bait set. "What if you lose?"
"Do what you want with me!" Gaara answered at once.
"Good." Kitazawa stepped forward and released his restraints.
"Where are they?" Gaara leapt from the bed, eager.
"You've just recovered; for fairness, I'll restore your chakra first." Kitazawa extended a hand.
Gaara blinked. Restore my chakra? The next instant an enormous flow of chakra wrapped around him, like standing before a tailed beast. His pupils constricted. This power was greater than Rasa's. A nagging question forced its way through his shock: as a Jinchūriki, losing a Tailed Beast meant death—so how was he alive?
The answer came with recognition of the chakra: someone had been feeding him energy for the past fortnight. It had been Kitazawa.
"Why did you save me?" Gaara asked, bewildered.
"You'll know soon enough."
Kitazawa withdrew his hand. "Follow me."
Gaara frowned but fell into step.
They reached the Ninja Academy quickly.
"Kitazawa-sensei."
Naruto glanced at Gaara. "New classmate?"
Ino and the others looked him over with interest.
"Not yet," Kitazawa replied and then called, "Sakura, fetch Sasuke."
"On it!" Sakura Haruno spun and dashed off.
"This is Gaara. Naruto, spar with him," Kitazawa said with a smile.
"No problem!" Naruto flashed a thumbs-up. "Gaara, let's have a youthful fight!"
"Nonsense," Gaara said coldly. "I'll kill you."
At that, Yakumo's and the others' expressions shifted.
Kitazawa didn't step in—Gaara would soon pay for that threat.
The Genius Class spread out, leaving the Training Ground to Gaara and Naruto.
"Begin," Kitazawa announced.
Gaara raised a hand coolly. Sand surged from the earth—
Then he froze.
The crimson chakra shot up. Naruto stood rooted, four tails sprouting behind him.
"Nine-Tails Jinchuriki?" Gaara's heart lurched as danger closed in from all sides.
"Multiple Shadow Clone Jutsu!" Naruto roared; over two thousand clones sprang up.
Gaara's face registered confusion. As a Jinchuriki, he'd always overwhelmed Suna shinobi with sheer chakra—never had he been so utterly outclassed in that regard.
Before he could decide, he swept both arms.
"Let's go!" Naruto and his clones charged, shouting about youth.
Sand shaped into shuriken burst outward. "Wind Release: Shuriken!" Naruto countered instantly.
Countless shuriken collided in midair. The Wind Release shuriken proved superior, shredding the sand blades and flying straight for Gaara.
"Shield of Sand!" Gaara instinctively formed his defense. The absolute Shield of Sand—an automatic protection from his mother Karura—rose around him.
"Rasengan!" Naruto slammed his hand forward; nearby clones followed.
Boom!
A dozen Rasengan punched holes through the shield of sand.
"Sand Binding Coffin!" Gaara's expression hardened as he thrust his hand toward Naruto. Grains of sand erupted from the ground, trying to wrap him up.
Cut off the head and the body dies—only by taking out the true body could Gaara end the swarm of clones.
"Konoha Dragon God!" Naruto reacted instantly, spinning. The incoming sand had barely approached when a huge crimson dragon wheeled and knocked it aside.
"What?!" Gaara's pupils trembled.
"Konoha Dragon God!" With that, the other Shadow Clones stopped holding back. Countless green dragons spun through the air and slammed into Gaara.
"Brutal," Shikamaru said, shaking his head.
"Exactly," Neji agreed.
"Still, Gaara's strong—no wonder he was so cocky a minute ago," Kiba remarked as he watched Gaara struggle.
"The Genius Class is never short on strength," Tenten said with a light laugh.
"True enough," Sakura added.
"Who's fighting Naruto?" Sasuke asked, puzzled.
"His name's Gaara. Kitazawa-sensei brought him; that's all I know," Ino explained.
"He was pretty confident earlier," Kiba chimed in with a grin. "Even said he'd kill Naruto."
"Really?" Sasuke narrowed his eyes. "Doesn't look like much. I bet you'll spar with him next," Shikamaru mused. "Otherwise, Kitazawa-sensei wouldn't have called you over."
Sasuke was about to reply when a loud crash cut him off.
Gaara was flung into the air; before he could land, another dragon slammed into him. For a moment he ping-ponged back and forth above the training ground.
