Chapter 13 - The Winter Blowing Through The Valley

Once the imposing stone tunnel of the Nireskaya Fortress was left behind, the descending caravan traded the narrow paths of the mountain passes for vast plains. However, losing altitude had not softened the weather; on the contrary, the wind howled even more viciously across the open terrain. The chill striking the wagon windows now carried the scent of frozen earth. The approaching harsh winter had painted the sky in a leaden hue.

Akça rubbed her hands together, trying to enjoy the faint warmth inside the wagon as she looked at Kaahn. As the fatigue of the journey settled over them, their usual faces of formality relaxed, giving way to the intimacy of their old, childhood days in Kayşahr.

"This bitter cold reminded me of that day in Kayşahr," Akça said, shaking her head with a slight smile. "You know, back when you were completely fed up with the palace tutors thick philosophy books and never-ending state law lectures."

Kaahn set his notes aside and leaned back, smirking slightly as he crossed his arms behind his head. "Which time are you referring to? I was trying a new way to escape the palace every single week."

"The most embarrassing one, of course," Akça teased, narrowing her eyes. "While the tutors thought you were in your room and stood guard at your door, you sneaked into that large, empty flour barrel sitting idly in the kitchen and had yourself carried right out of the palace gates. When the barrel was unloaded from the cart and the lid opened, you were covered in flour from head to toe. You stepped out of that barrel looking like a white ghost."

Kaahn laughed softly, his hand instinctively going to his chin. "The plan was flawless, but I hadn't factored in the leftover flour residue inside. Besides, walking all the way to the riverbank behind the palace walls in that freezing cold was absolute torture."

"And you got caught by me," Akça said with a mischievous glint in her eye. "To keep me from reporting you to the palace guards, you promised to buy me my favorite honey buns. I'm still waiting for you to keep that promise, Crown Prince."

"By the way," Akça muttered, "your sister was very worried about you when you went missing."

Kaahn's playful expression faded for a brief moment, replaced by a subtle shadow of guilt, but he quickly recovered. "Once the caravan safely reaches its destination, I'll buy you a whole barrel full of buns," Kaahn replied, winking.

A few hours later, the surroundings changed once more. The convoy had altered its route entirely to the outer fringes to avoid being spotted by Kayşehir, the magnificent capital and administrative heart of the kingdom. As the gleaming towers of Kayşeir appeared and disappeared as mere silhouettes behind the distant mountains, the caravan slipped silently through the paths of the quiet, secluded villages surrounding the capital. These six ordinary wagons carrying timber and flour tracked the most covert roads toward Namtab, uninterrupted by the curious glances of the villagers. The temperature dropped further with each passing hour.

The final major natural obstacle of the journey was a wide river known for its rushing waters. Beran slowed his horse as the caravan reached the old but sturdy stone bridge connecting the two riverbanks. While the heavy load of the wagons echoed with thudding sounds against the stones of the bridge, the icy river waters flowing beneath them had begun to carry thin sheets of ice on the surface—a herald of the oncoming winter. The convoy crossed to the other side smoothly and safely.

Right past the bridge, at the foothills of the Namtab slopes, they reached the hidden compound that had been meticulously prepared months in advance. Looking like an ordinary mining site or an abandoned storage facility from the outside, this bunker was the place where the new steps would be taken. As the massive gates slowly groaned open to let the caravan inside, Kaahn and Akça finally exhaled the deep breath that came with reaching their destination. The border had been crossed; the cargo had arrived.

The heavy iron gates shutting with a loud thud behind the caravan felt like a whisper that the tense, days-long journey was finally over. The unforgiving cold and leaden sky outside gave way to the dimness of a colossal, stone-carved bunker illuminated by the flickering light of torches. As the wagons came to a halt one after another, the final heavy roll of the wheels echoed and faded beneath the high ceiling of the bunker.

Kaahn stepped out of the wagon, drawing the sharp scent of metal and gunpowder deep into his lungs. This old mining site beneath the Namtab slopes had practically been turned into an underground city, thanks to months of covert operations.

"The palace ceilings in Kayşeir were lined with gold leaf, but I must admit," Kaahn said, smirking as he brushed the dust off his coat, "the smell of dampness and rust here is far more refreshing than those never-ending law lectures."

Akça stepped down from the wagon as well, stomping her boots against the stone to shake off the snow. She couldn't help but roll her eyes slightly at Kaahn's relaxed demeanor. "I wonder if you'll still call it a refreshing scent two days from now when it settles into your lungs, my Prince. And let me warn you in advance; you won't be able to shrug off cleaning your quarters on the lower level of the mine with your flour-barrel tactics. Those tricks won't fly here."

"My barrel experience taught me how to survive in tight spaces, Akça. The size of the room is no concern," Kaahn fired back with a wink.

While their familiar bickering continued, Beran had already dismounted and moved toward the back of the wagons to check the security of the caravan. Footsteps echoing from the deeper sections of the bunker signaled the approach of the dependable engineers and loyal workers who had been preparing the ground for this shipment for months. The heavy industrial parts, hydraulic presses, and mechanical drill bits hidden beneath the flour sacks in the caravan were finally ready to see the light of day.

Far from the watchful eyes of Kayşeir, inside this dark bunker at the foot of the mountain, the first steps to change the grim fate of the kingdom were about to be taken.
