Chapter 52 - – The Predator and the Phoenix

"Not every monster is born in darkness… some are forged by it."

📍 Main Hall — Phoenix Guild

The hall was packed.

Not a single empty space remained.

Members from every squad—veterans, recruits, instructors—formed a wide circle around the central training arena.

But what stood out most…

Was the silence.

It wasn't respect.

It was tension.

At the center, walking with steady, controlled steps, stood Darius Valtier.

His presence imposed order effortlessly. Even the sound of his boots against the polished floor was enough to keep everyone focused.

He stopped.

Turned slowly.

Then spoke:

— "Very well."

His voice cut through the hall like a blade.

— "Now you will formally introduce yourself, Zen."

A pause.

— "State your name… your abilities…"

His gaze sharpened slightly.

— "And what you bring to this guild."

All eyes turned.

Without exception.

Zen Kagetsune.

The name alone carried weight.

The man who nearly killed Ethan Stormbreak.

The mercenary who kidnapped Eliara.

The predator who hunted heroes… for money.

And now—

He stood there.

Wearing the black uniform of the Phoenix Guild.

Zen exhaled slowly.

His hands rested in his pockets.

Relaxed posture.

But it wasn't arrogance.

It was exhaustion.

His dark hair was loosely tied back. The scars across his face and neck were more visible than ever.

There was no pride in them.

Only history.

He lifted his gaze.

Golden eyes—sharp, instinctive—scanned the crowd.

Reading.

Measuring.

Like a predator…

Who no longer knew if he still was one.

— "My name is Zen Kagetsune."

His voice was calm.

Controlled.

— "I'm 25 years old."

A brief pause.

A faint smirk touched his lips.

— "I like gambling… bets… sake…"

He tilted his head slightly.

— "And money."

A few members exchanged glances.

Others let out uneasy chuckles.

Zen exhaled lightly through his nose.

— "At least… I used to."

The faint humor faded.

— "As for my powers…"

He hesitated.

Just for a second.

— "I'm not sure I'll ever fully recover them."

Silence returned.

Heavier now.

— "But before…"

He raised his chin.

— "I was known as…"

A pause.

— "The Absolute Predator."

A chill ran through the hall.

Whispers spread among the recruits.

Zen continued:

— "That state pushed my body beyond its limits."

His tone grew colder.

More distant.

— "My hearing could detect heartbeats from miles away."

— "My vision could read movement before it happened."

— "My speed…"

He glanced down briefly.

— "Made time feel slow."

A pause.

— "And my strength…"

His eyes hardened.

— "Was too destructive to be used without consequences."

The entire hall stood in absolute silence.

— "I had no aura."

He looked up again.

— "And even so… I hunted heroes."

A slow breath.

— "I was the monster you feared encountering."

No sound.

No reaction.

— "A devourer of heroes."

Silence.

Darius crossed his arms, studying the guild's reaction.

— "Impressive."

He stepped forward.

— "Then, as leader of the Phoenix Guild…"

A pause.

— "I officially welcome you, Zen Kagetsune."

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then…

Applause.

Weak.

Hesitant.

Divided.

Some smiled.

Others remained still.

Suspicious.

But all acknowledged him.

All… except one.

Ethan Stormbreak.

He didn't move.

Didn't clap.

Didn't speak.

He simply looked away.

But his eyes…

Burned.

Zen noticed.

Of course he did.

But he didn't react.

He simply… accepted it.

📍 Strategy Room — Moments Later

The door shut with a sharp sound.

The space was smaller.

More enclosed.

More honest.

Ryan, Ryu, and Ethan stood before Darius.

The silence here was different.

Not collective.

Personal.

Darius rested his hands on the table.

— "I know."

His voice was lower now.

— "This feels strange."

He looked at them.

— "Too fast."

A pause.

— "Maybe even wrong."

Ethan stepped forward.

His aura flickered.

Unstable.

— "It's not 'maybe,' sensei."

His voice was tight.

— "It is wrong."

The air vibrated faintly around him.

— "What if he betrays us?"

Another step.

— "What if this is all part of a plan?"

His fists clenched.

— "He nearly killed us… for money."

His eyes locked onto Darius.

— "Do you really believe someone like that has changed?"

Silence.

Darius didn't look away.

— "If he tries anything…"

His voice turned colder.

Sharper.

— "Kelvin and I will deal with him."

A pause.

— "Not with words."

Another.

— "With force."

Then—

— "If necessary…"

His gaze hardened.

— "I will end him myself."

Ethan froze.

The answer came without hesitation.

Without doubt.

Without emotion.

It didn't calm him.

But it stopped him.

For now.

Ryu crossed his arms, breaking the tension with a half-smile.

— "So… it was my father, wasn't it?"

He raised a brow.

— "The one who suggested bringing Zen in."

Darius sighed.

— "I've told you not to call me 'uncle' at work."

Ryu chuckled.

— "Sorry… habit."

He gave a mock bow.

— "Sensei."

Ryan, silent until now, finally spoke.

His voice was calm.

But firm.

— "I think… he deserves a second chance."

Both turned to him.

— "When I fought him…"

Ryan clenched his fist slightly.

— "My Reversum… purified something."

A pause.

— "It wasn't just energy."

— "It felt like something trapped inside him."

His eyes deepened.

— "A curse."

— "A spirit."

He took a breath.

— "And when it disappeared…"

— "He regained his aura."

Silence.

— "That fight…"

Ryan looked up.

— "Wasn't just a battle."

— "It was a release."

Darius nodded slowly.

— "Exactly."

He crossed his arms.

— "And if anyone understands that…"

— "It's Kelvin."

A pause.

— "He saw something in Zen that most didn't."

His gaze sharpened.

— "A weapon."

— "That can finally be aimed at the right enemy."

The air grew heavy again.

Ethan lifted his head.

Still conflicted.

— "Eliara…"

His voice was quieter now.

— "She's alive?"

Darius closed his eyes briefly.

Then answered:

— "Yes."

Ethan's heart raced.

— "And according to Zen…"

His tone hardened again.

— "The Renegades are using her Singularity."

Ryan clenched his fists.

Ryu's smile vanished.

Ethan froze.

— "As an energy source."

A pause.

— "To destabilize the balance of the world."

Silence.

— "If things spiral out of control…"

Darius continued:

— "There will be direct intervention."

— "From me."

— "From Kelvin."

A pause.

— "Or from Inavy."

The name lingered heavily in the air.

Then—

Darius looked directly at Ryan.

— "But before that…"

A faint smirk appeared.

— "You need to learn something essential."

Ryan frowned.

— "What?"

Darius tilted his head slightly.

— "How to disappear."

A pause.

— "How to completely hide your aura."

🔥 The Doors Open

BOOM.

The arena doors burst open.

Heavy footsteps echoed.

Precise.

Measured.

A presence entered—

And the air changed.

A woman.

Radiant crimson armor.

Red hair tied into a tight military bun.

Eyes burning with fierce determination.

Like a living flame.

Diana Flamesoul.

She didn't need to raise her voice.

Her presence alone dominated the room.

— "Training time."

Her tone was cold.

Direct.

— "Like the old days."

Ryan swallowed hard.

Ryu straightened instinctively.

Ethan… simply watched.

Darius crossed his arms, pride flickering in his eyes.

— "She's going to make you bleed…"

A pause.

— "Until you learn how to disappear."

He looked at the three of them.

— "Because the rescue mission…"

His voice grew heavier.

— "Will take place in enemy territory."

Silence.

— "Prepare yourselves."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

— "For real training."
