Chapter 88 - Chapter 85: Three Hearts

The fever broke quietly.

Not all at once.

Not dramatically.

Just… slowly.

Like a storm losing strength.

Kael's breathing eased first.

Less sharp.

Less strained.

Aiden noticed immediately.

Of course he did.

He had been watching every breath for days.

"…Theron," he whispered, voice hoarse from exhaustion. "His breathing—"

Theron was already there.

Kneeling.

Watching.

Kael shifted slightly in Aiden's arms, his small face still flushed—but no longer burning.

The heat was fading.

"…it's going down," Theron said, softer than Aiden had ever heard him.

Relief didn't come all at once.

It crept in.

Careful.

Fragile.

Like neither of them trusted it yet.

Aiden's shoulders sagged slightly.

Just a little.

The first crack in days.

Ryn stirred beside him, blinking sleepily.

"…Mama?"

Aiden brushed his hair back gently.

"It's okay," he murmured. "He's okay."

Lior made a small sound, crawling closer, pressing into Aiden's side like he always did when something felt off.

The nest was quieter now.

Warmer in a different way.

Not tense.

Not sharp.

Just… tired.

Kael shifted again.

This time—

His eyes opened.

Slowly.

Unfocused at first.

Then—

They found Aiden.

"Mama…"

Aiden let out a breath that felt like it had been trapped in his chest for days.

"Hey," he whispered, voice breaking slightly. "Hey, you're back."

Kael blinked slowly.

Then frowned.

Like something was missing.

His gaze drifted.

Searching.

Until—

It landed on Theron.

There was a pause.

Small.

But heavy.

Then Kael's hand lifted weakly.

Reaching.

"…papa…"

The word was soft.

Barely there.

But it hit like a storm.

Theron froze.

Completely.

For a moment, he didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

As if the word itself had rooted him in place.

Then—

Slowly—

Carefully—

He leaned closer.

Not as a king.

Not as a god.

But as something else entirely.

"…I'm here," he said quietly.

Kael's small hand curled into his fingers.

Weak.

But certain.

Theron's chest tightened.

Something deep inside him—

Shifted.

Not power.

Not control.

Something softer.

Stronger in a different way.

He lowered his head slightly, pressing his forehead gently against Kael's.

Not trying to fix anything.

Not trying to change anything.

Just—

Being there.

A father.

Aiden watched them.

Silent.

Tired.

But something in his gaze softened.

Ryn crawled closer, pressing into Theron's side now too, as if drawn in by the calm.

Lior followed, climbing half into Aiden's lap and half toward Theron, not wanting to choose.

Three small bodies.

One space.

No distance.

No fear.

Just warmth.

Just family.

Aiden shifted slightly, adjusting the blankets around them all.

His movements were slower now.

Heavy.

But gentle.

Always gentle.

Theron noticed.

Of course he did.

"You should rest," he said quietly.

Aiden huffed softly.

"I've heard that one before."

"You need it."

Aiden didn't argue this time.

Didn't fight.

But he didn't let go either.

His hand rested over Kael.

Over all of them.

As if he still needed to feel them there.

To know they were okay.

"I will," he murmured. "Later."

Theron didn't push.

Didn't try to force it.

He just stayed.

Kael's breathing steadied further.

Ryn's eyes began to close again.

Lior yawned, small ears twitching.

The worst had passed.

For now.

Aiden's gaze drifted downward.

To the small space just beneath his ribs.

His hand moved there without thinking.

Resting lightly.

Just for a moment.

A faint flicker.

Not pain.

Not even discomfort.

Just…

Awareness.

His wolf stirred quietly.

Soft.

Protective.

Different.

Aiden stilled.

Just for a second.

Then—

He exhaled.

Slow.

Quiet.

His hand shifted back to Kael.

Nothing said.

Nothing explained.

Just a small, hidden knowing tucked beneath everything else.

Theron glanced at him.

Not missing the movement.

But not understanding it either.

Not yet.

"…everything okay?" he asked quietly.

Aiden nodded.

"Yeah."

And for now—

That was true.

Kael slept again.

Peacefully this time.

Ryn and Lior curled close.

Theron remained beside them.

Not watching like before.

Not tense.

Just present.

And Aiden—

Finally—

Let his eyes close.

Still surrounded.

Still holding on.

Three small heartbeats close to his own.

And one more…

So quiet.

So new.

It barely made a sound at all.
