Chapter 80 - chapter 77: familiar eyes

The snow outside the den had melted into soft puddles, and the morning light spilled warmly across the wooden floor. The pups were busy building a small fort with cushions, giggling as they shoved each other into the makeshift walls.

Theron watched them quietly from the doorway, arms crossed, a soft smile tugging at his lips. Aiden was kneeling beside Kael, tying a tiny piece of string around his wrist like a "wolf bracelet" the toddler had demanded.

"Hold still," Aiden muttered. "This is a temporary masterpiece."

Kael's tail flicked in approval.

The sound of crunching snow at the entrance made both adults tense slightly. The pups paused mid-giggle, heads tilting.

"Visitors?" Aiden whispered.

Theron's gaze shifted, narrowing subtly.

A figure stepped into the den—a tall man with ash-blond hair tied low at the neck and calm grey eyes that seemed to see everything. Eirik.

The moment Eirik's gaze landed on Aiden, something unspoken flickered. A slow, deliberate smile curved his lips, warm and faintly dangerous, like a wolf lurking at the edge of the forest.

Theron noticed it immediately.

That look.

The way Eirik's eyes lingered just a second too long. The subtle tilt of his head, the quiet confidence. Even after all this time, it was the same gaze he had given Aiden years ago, long before the bond was ever discovered.

Theron's tail flicked slightly, almost involuntarily. Calm… until the faint stirrings of possessive instinct rolled under his skin.

Aiden, of course, remained blissfully oblivious. He laughed at Kael's wiggling arms, tying the string too tightly around the tiny wrist. "You're going to strangle yourself with this," he said, gently tugging.

Eirik's smile softened as he stepped fully into the room. He crouched slightly to meet the pups' eye level.

"Good morning, little wolves," he said gently, and Ryn immediately clutched his coat with both hands. Lior crawled over, curious and unafraid, sniffing his hair. Kael, ever cautious, studied him like a tiny judge before finally giving a tentative paw.

Theron's eyes followed every move, carefully noting how Eirik interacted with the toddlers. Protective instinct flared, but he kept it buried behind calm. For now.

Aiden finally looked up from Kael's "wolf bracelet."

"Eirik!" he said casually. "You're here early."

Eirik's smile widened faintly, almost imperceptibly, as he held Aiden's gaze.

"Just passing through," he said, voice smooth. "Thought I'd check in… see how our stubborn little omega is doing."

Aiden blinked, completely oblivious to the subtle undertone, and grinned. "You mean me?"

"Yes… you," Eirik replied, letting his eyes linger a beat longer than necessary.

Theron's jaw tightened ever so slightly. He shifted his stance, stepping subtly closer to Aiden without making it obvious, like a shadow protecting the center of his territory.

Aiden glanced between them. "Everything okay?"

Theron's lips curved faintly. "Everything's fine."

Eirik chuckled softly, crouching to give Lior a gentle pat on the head. "I see the pups are as… energetic as their parents."

"They are," Aiden agreed proudly, ruffling Ryn's hair. "Kael's a copy of his father, obviously. Ryn… a balance between both. And Lior…" He paused, glancing down at his youngest. "Well… he's mine entirely."

Theron's gaze flicked to Aiden, noting the pride in his voice, the way Aiden stood just a little straighter when claiming Lior. Eirik's eyes lingered on Aiden for just a heartbeat too long again, subtle, like a wolf scent marking—affection mixed with lingering longing.

Theron didn't comment. Not yet.

He simply crossed his arms, watching, his amber eyes sharp and alert. He would wait. He always waited.

For now, the room stayed calm—tense, but calm. The pups continued to play in their fort, blissfully unaware of the silent battle of gazes between three adults.

And Aiden? He laughed at a small tumble Kael took, still completely unaware of the undercurrent in the room, and leaned casually against Theron.

"…Family breakfast is going to be interesting," Theron muttered under his breath, tail flicking almost imperceptibly.

Eirik's lips twitched in a smile. "…As always."

The pups cheered as Kael staged a dramatic rescue from the pillow fort, and the unspoken tension in the air shifted… for now, contained beneath layers of warmth, laughter, and snow-flecked sunlight streaming into the den.

Aiden finally stood, stretching his sore back. "Alright, enough fort-building for now. Breakfast is officially over. Clean up, you three."

Kael groaned. Ryn pouted. Lior gave a small squeak, but all three obeyed with tiny grumbles.

Theron moved to help gather the cushions and blankets while Aiden started tidying the small mess on the table.

Eirik lingered near the doorway, casually leaning against the wall. His grey eyes followed Aiden's movements, slow and deliberate, and he let a faint smile linger on his lips. There was admiration in it, yes, but also something… deeper. Something older.

Aiden, oblivious as ever, hummed to himself while wiping up a smear of honey from Lior's sticky fingers.

Theron noticed the way Eirik's gaze lingered a heartbeat too long, the subtle tilt of his head, the soft smile that seemed reserved only for Aiden. Amber eyes flicked to Aiden's relaxed form, then back to Eirik, calculating.

Eirik stepped closer under the guise of helping the pups. He crouched down to pick up a fallen pillow Kael had kicked across the floor. "Need a hand?" he asked softly.

Aiden looked up, a smile spreading across his face. "Thanks, Eirik. That's very… helpful of you."

Theron's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. He didn't move, didn't say anything. He simply shifted slightly closer to Aiden, just enough that his presence was a quiet warning.

Eirik's smile softened, but his gaze didn't leave Aiden. He handed the pillow over with a small bow of his head, then straightened. "You've grown a lot, Aiden. More than I expected."

Aiden blinked. "Oh? How do you mean?"

Eirik's eyes glimmered faintly. "In… everything. Strength, confidence… your pack presence. And… your family." His gaze flicked briefly to the pups before returning to Aiden. "…You've changed in ways that… surprise me."

Aiden shrugged, still completely unaware of the subtle undertones. "Well, life happens, I guess. Kids help a lot with that." He ruffled Kael's hair. "Right, big guy?"

Kael grinned, clinging to Aiden's leg. "Right!"

Theron's amber eyes narrowed slightly, tail flicking just enough to show tension. His hand brushed Aiden's back instinctively, not touching Eirik, just… a quiet mark of protection.

Eirik tilted his head, almost imperceptibly noting the subtle possession in Theron's stance. A slow, calm smile curved his lips again, though now it was edged with something sharper—interest, challenge, and… memory.

He let the moment hang, just long enough for Theron to notice. Then, casually, he straightened, giving Aiden one last lingering look. "I should be going," he said smoothly.

Aiden looked up, puzzled. "Oh… alright. See you later, Eirik."

Theron's tail swished slowly behind him, low but tense. "Yes. Later," he echoed, voice cool but firm.

Eirik stepped toward the door, pausing briefly to glance back at Aiden. His eyes softened, just slightly, but there was still that spark—reminding everyone, especially Theron, of a past affection and a tension that had never truly gone away.

The door closed behind him.

Theron let out a long breath he hadn't realized he was holding and stepped closer to Aiden, lowering his voice. "He didn't just visit for the pups," he said quietly.

Aiden glanced up, oblivious, then leaned casually against Theron. "Probably just checking in. He's friendly."

Theron's amber eyes softened, but the edge didn't leave. "Friendly… yes. But the gaze he gave you just now? That was not just friendship."

Aiden hummed, unconcerned, and started helping Kael pick up the last pillow. "Well, he's allowed to look, isn't he?"

Theron pressed a finger gently against Aiden's side, and Aiden jumped slightly. "Theron," he muttered, grinning.

"No one else touches what's mine," Theron said, voice soft but firm.

Aiden laughed lightly, resting his head against Theron's chest. "I know. You always say that."

The pups, oblivious to the subtle tension, tumbled over each other in the pillows, shrieking and laughing.

Outside, the snow still fell lightly. Inside, warmth filled the room—but a silent storm lingered in amber and grey eyes, just beneath the laughter and domestic chaos.

Theron's tail curled protectively around Aiden's feet. "You won't even notice when the storm comes," he murmured.

Aiden smiled up at him, rubbing Kael's back. "I notice plenty. But I'm not worried. Not with you here."

Theron's amber gaze softened, but the edge of possessiveness never fully disappeared.

And somewhere, quietly, Eirik's shadow lingered at the edges of memory—a reminder that past emotions, no matter how buried, never truly vanished.
