Chapter 6 - CHAPTER SIX

Chapter 6: Movie Night

The living room had been transformed into a cozy fortress — blankets and pillows sprawled everywhere, soft glowing fairy lights twinkling overhead. Bowls of popcorn, chips, and candy littered the coffee tables, and the faint scent of caramel and buttery popcorn filled the air.

Lila and Zara were in charge of the snacks and the music, setting the mood with a playlist of slow jams and indie hits between the movie trailers. Jade sprawled across the couch with an exaggerated sigh, clearly unimpressed but determined to be part of the group.

Mia sat cross-legged on the floor, wedged between Eli and Ethan, a blanket loosely draped over her shoulders. The movie flickered on the big screen, casting soft shadows across the room.

She wasn't really watching.

Her attention kept flicking to Ethan — the way his jaw clenched when he laughed, the subtle crease between his brows during the tense scenes, the almost imperceptible way his knee brushed against hers.

It was like a slow burn, that quiet heat between them that neither dared to fully acknowledge.

Eli, sitting on her other side, caught her gaze and grinned.

"You okay?" he whispered, his voice low enough that only she could hear.

Mia nodded, a shy smile tugging at her lips. "Yeah… I'm good."

He nudged her gently with his elbow. "Good. Because I plan on distracting you all night."

She laughed softly, and the sound felt like a secret shared just between them.

Jade, lounging on the couch, caught the exchange and rolled her eyes, flipping her hair dramatically. "You two are like teenagers," she muttered loudly enough to draw a few chuckles.

"Better than being ignored," Eli shot back, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

Mia's cheeks flushed. She looked down, pretending to focus on the movie, but her heart was doing everything but settling.

The movie played on, the romantic tension on screen mirroring the invisible thread pulling her toward Ethan. Then, during a particularly quiet scene, Ethan shifted closer without warning. His knee brushed hers again, firmer this time, sending a jolt through her.

He cleared his throat, trying to seem casual, but the tension was thick enough to slice through.

"You shouldn't be here," he murmured, voice low and rough.

Her breath hitched. "Why not?"

"Because… this isn't just family anymore."

The words hung between them, heavy and charged.

Mia's heart pounded. Before she could respond, Eli, seemingly oblivious, cracked a joke about the movie's plot, breaking the moment but not the electricity lingering in the air.

Minutes passed, and exhaustion tugged at Mia's eyelids. The day's heat, the excitement, the late night catching up with her. Her head drooped, then tilted to the side.

She wasn't aware of the shift until she felt Ethan's arm wrap gently around her shoulders, steady and warm.

Her breath hitched again as she slowly sank into the warmth of his side, her head resting lightly against his chest.

The steady beat of his heart was hypnotic.

She drifted off, the movie's sound fading into a comfortable background hum.

He kept his hands firmly in his lap, determined not to cross any lines. After all, everyone saw them as family, and Ethan wasn't about to ruin that.

But as the minutes passed, Mia shifted. Her eyes fluttered closed, but her body didn't stay still. Slowly, almost shyly, she crawled closer, her hips pressing lightly against his thigh. A soft wiggle, a subtle grind—just enough to make Ethan's breath hitch.

He swallowed hard, trying to ignore the warmth spreading through him. "Mia," he whispered, voice tight, "you're going to wake something ."

But she just smiled sleepily, rubbing gently, her body moving without thinking as she slipped deeper into sleep.

No one else seemed to notice. To them, it was just two siblings watching a movie—nothing more.

Ethan's mind raced—he wanted to pull away, to remind her of the lines between them, but her soft weight, the slow rhythm of her movements, held him captive.

When the credits rolled, voices and movement stirred around her.

Ethan didn't move. Instead, he carefully lifted her into his arms, careful not to wake her.

His gaze softened as he carried her down the hall, past the glow of the hallway lights.

He paused outside her door, gently settling her onto the bed, pulling the blanket up to her chin.

Standing there, watching her sleep, a slow, conflicted smile tugged at his lips.

"Goodnight, Mia," he whispered.

And with that, he quietly left the room, leaving her to dreams full of possibilities.
