NIGHTFALL: THE SILENT BLADE
BOOK ONE: THE EMERALD DYNASTY
CHAPTER FOUR: THE SECRET OF THE ANCIENT ARCHIVES
Night fell completely across the capital, painting the sky in deep shades of indigo and violet. High above the sleeping city, the floating mountains shimmered like suspended moons, their crystalline foundations casting a soft, greenish-purple aura over the marble towers of the Emerald Palace.
While the rest of the palace slept, the lower subterranean levels were far from quiet.
Prince Rain walked softly down a long, spiraling staircase carved directly into the bedrock beneath the palace. Unlike the illuminated corridors above, this lower passageway was dimly lit by narrow strips of embedded emerald crystal that hummed at a low, deep frequency. Rain was dressed in a dark green hooded tunic and soft leather boots that muffled his footsteps against the cold stone floor.
He knew he was breaking palace protocol by leaving his quarters past midnight, but he could not sleep. The image of the dying energy conduit on Commander Kael's map kept repeating in his mind, accompanied by an unsettling, phantom chill in his palms.
At the bottom of the staircase stood a massive double door made of black iron and reinforced with braided silver bands. Carved across the center of the doors was the full royal seal: the golden tree with seven leaves surrounded by an intricate circular network of geometric lines.
Standing before the doors was Master Vance.
The grand scholar had laid his heavy navy robes aside, wearing a simple dark tunic as he hovered over an open stone console. A floating crystalline orb hovered between his hands, spinning slowly as he projected ancient holographic diagrams into the air.
Rain stopped several paces back, his boot clicking lightly against a loose stone.
Vance did not turn around, but his voice echoed calmly in the quiet hall. "Pacing back and forth in your bedchamber will not yield answers, Prince Rain. Nor will creeping down the royal stairwells at midnight."
Rain paused, pulling down his hood. "You knew I was following you?"
"I knew the moment your energy signature crossed the lower threshold," Vance said, turning around with a calm, analytical expression. "Your physical movement is quiet, but your internal kinetic footprint is distinct. You walk with a heavy heel when your mind is preoccupied."
Rain stepped up beside the scholar, looking down at the ancient console. "Father told you to check the sealed archives for records of energy decay. Did you find anything?"
Vance looked at the young prince for a long moment. He seemed to weigh the propriety of dismissing the heir to his bed against the sharp, unyielding curiosity in Rain's emerald eyes. Finally, the scholar let out a quiet breath and tapped the floating orb.
"The imperial histories recorded in the public archives are complete, yet sanitized," Vance began, his voice dropping to a low, reverent murmur. "They detail three thousand years of peace, prosperity, and ecological harmony under the Emerald Dynasty. But harmony is not an accident of nature; it is a balance maintained against an opposing force."
The floating orb expanded, casting a wide holographic map of Elarion into the center of the dark hall. The map did not just show the surface landscape; it revealed deep, glowing root systems of energy extending far beneath the oceans and mountain ranges.
"During the First Age," Vance explained, pointing to the base of the diagram, "the world was not unified. The natural energy of Elarion—what we call the **Emerald Resonance**—was contested. Another force existed alongside it: a dense, non-vibrational mass known in the oldest records as **The Ashen Core**."
Rain leaned closer, staring at the dark spots on the holographic map. "What is non-vibrational mass?"
"Standard energy flows in waves," Vance said, shaping his hands to demonstrate. "It moves, transfers, and transforms. That is how our technology works, how your sword strikes discharge, and how the floating mountains remain buoyant. But The Ashen Core does not vibrate. It absorbs. It takes kinetic energy, light, and elemental magic, and locks them into an absolute state of stasis. Where Ashen energy touches an emerald conduit, the conduit does not break—it simply ceases to exist as an active channel."
"Like the conduit on the cliffside today," Rain realized, his breath catching. "It didn't shatter. It turned grey."
"Precisely," Vance said grimly. "Three thousand years ago, the first Emperor sealed the primary entrance of the Ashen Core beneath the Eastern Quadrant using seven master key crystals. For three millennia, those seals have remained untouched. But a seal is only as strong as the integrity of the network feeding it."
Vance stepped up to the massive black iron doors, placing his right palm flat against the central crest.
The silver bands along the iron frame began to glow with a sharp, pale-green light. Internal mechanical gears clicked in a rapid, rhythmic sequence, heavy locks sliding back one by one. With a deep, groaning sound, the massive vault doors swung inward, revealing a vast, subterranean chamber filled with thousands of glowing crystal tablets, ancient stone slabs, and forgotten relics of the First Age.
Rain stepped across the threshold, feeling a strange, heavy pressure in the air. The atmospheric energy here was dense, almost thick enough to feel against his skin.
In the very center of the secret vault stood a single pedestal made of polished obsidian. Resting upon it was an ancient weapon sheath crafted from black steel and gold thread, completely empty.
Rain stopped in front of the pedestal, drawn to it by a subtle pull in his bloodstream. "What was stored here?"
"The primary relic of the First Emperor," Vance said, walking up beside him. "A weapon engineered not to release energy, but to channel both Emerald Resonance and Ashen stasis without shattering the wielder. It was known as *The Silent Blade*."
Rain reached out his hand toward the empty pedestal, stopping his fingers an inch above the cold stone. As he did, the pale scar above his right eyebrow throbbed with a brief, sudden warmth—a tiny pulse that matched the distant rhythm of the eastern mountains.
Vance noticed the movement, his eyes narrowing slightly, but he said nothing.
"If the blade is gone," Rain asked, pulling his hand back, "where is it now?"
"It is not lost," Vance answered quietly, turning back toward the library shelves. "It resides where it has always belonged: in the private armory of the reigning Emperor. Your father carries the key to its lock."
Vance pulled a thick, stone-bound ledger from the shelf, setting it down on a reading altar. "Now, Prince Rain. You have seen what lies beneath the surface of our history. But knowledge without discipline is a dangerous burden. If you intend to stay down here, you will assist me in translating these First Age operational records before morning."
Rain looked from the empty obsidian pedestal back to the scholar, his posture straightening instantly.
"I'm ready, Master Vance," Rain said.
Through the rest of the night, deep beneath the silent marble palace, the young prince and the grand scholar worked side by side in the green glow of the ancient vault, translating records of a long-forgotten war while the world above slept in unsuspecting peace.
