Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

Adam remained crouched in the bushes his sharp blue eyes fixed on BlockHead in the clearing. The player's fighting style was simple basic sword swings with predictable movements.

It was efficient for a beginner but it reinforced Adam's feeling that he was on a completely different level. His unique Administrator class and his new Mark and Attack skill meant he could achieve so much more in a fraction of the time. There was no reason for him to waste valuable hours slowly grinding weak creatures like slimes for meager experience. Slimes were for players who knew nothing.

"Slimes are just stepping stones," Adam thought. He quietly stepped away from the tree leaving BlockHead to his slow grind. His true targets were much larger more dangerous and deeper within the forest. That was where he would find significant experience and valuable loot.

As he ventured further into the woods the vegetation grew denser. The trees towered high into the sky their branches intertwining to form a thick canopy. The dense roof of leaves filtered the sunlight into soft dappled patches on the forest floor. The air here was rich and earthy carrying the strong scent of damp wood and fresh leaves. The distant chirping of crickets was replaced by the constant soft rustling of foliage in the wind.

Adam moved quickly and carefully his steps light and quiet on the soft earth. His black outfit designed for stealth made him difficult to see. Unlike other players who were still clumsy in the new VR environment Adam's movements were fluid and precise. This grace was a result of his real-life fitness combined with the thousands of hours of muscle memory from the original game.

His mind quickly reviewed his knowledge of the creatures in this beginner area. This was his greatest advantage. He had all the facts stored in his memory. Slimes were Level 1-2 predictable and perfect for beginners.

Fang Rabbits were Level 3-5 a step up known for their speed and agility. Red Wolves were Level 5-10 the true predators of this forest. They were fierce fast and highly aggressive attacking players on sight. They were far beyond the abilities of most new players.

Adam smirked a look of confidence and arrogance. "Well I'm not an ordinary player" he thought. He would go straight for the most dangerous prey. If he wanted to level up quickly he had to take bigger risks and fight stronger monsters. Risk equaled reward.

As he moved deeper into the woods memories of his past life surfaced. He remembered the powerful guilds that controlled all the important hunting grounds even in these beginner zones. They charged weaker players fees just to be allowed to farm monsters. If a player refused the guilds would hunt them down relentlessly until they were forced to quit. Adam had once been one of those weak players forced to grind under the oppressive rules of others. He remembered the anger and the powerlessness.

He clenched his fist the memory fueling his resolve. "Never again," he thought fiercely. He would never be weak again. He would be the one with the power. The guilds thought they controlled the game but they had never accounted for an Administrator.

He adjusted his hood. He suddenly realized the full benefit of his stealth gear. The game had not stripped this property from his character. If the powerful guilds of the future tried to track AlphaBoss they would fail. He could move through the world like a ghost building his power in secret.

The forest grew dimmer as he moved deeper. His sharp blue eyes constantly scanned the dense foliage for any sign of movement. He heard it then a faint rustling noise in the distance that was not the wind. A low deep growl followed. It was the sound of a predator.

Adam's lips curved into the smirk of a predator who had found his prey. His fingers instinctively brushed the hilt of his knife. His body tensed preparing for action. He crouched low behind a massive tree trunk his breathing steady and controlled. The rustling grew louder.

He peered carefully past the edge of the tree. His gaze focused on a small pack of monsters in a tiny break in the trees ahead. It was a pack of five Fang Wolves. Their sleek muscular bodies moved with quiet power. Their sharp fangs glistened in the filtered sunlight.

At the front of the pack stood the leader a striking female wolf. Her piercing yellow eyes constantly scanned her surroundings. Her body was noticeably larger than the others her posture radiating dominance. Adam's smirk widened. This was his first real target.

He had fought Fang Wolves many times before. He knew their patterns their weaknesses and the best way to take them down. A Level 1 player would have no chance against a pack of Level 5-10 wolves in a direct fight. But Adam was not just any player.

He was AlphaBoss an Administrator armed with future knowledge and impossible skills. His fingers tightened around the hilt of his knife. He had to be careful. If the pack sensed him before he struck they would tear him apart in seconds. Holding his breath he activated his newest skill Mark and Attack. He directed his gaze at the female wolf leader. A faint glow visible only to him surrounded her body. His skill had locked on.

He exhaled slowly steadying himself. "One shot," he thought. "I have to make it count." With a swift movement born from countless hours of practice he pulled his arm back and launched the knife. The blade flew through the air with unnatural speed guided by the Mark. It embedded itself deep into the female wolf's skull. Blood splattered onto the forest floor. The wolf let out a sharp cry of pain staggered for a moment then collapsed with a heavy thud.

A system notification appeared before him.

[Critical Hit! 100 Damage. Level 5 Fang Wolf defeated]

He let out a slow breath. He was not finished. The remaining four wolves froze shocked by the sudden death of their leader.

Their ears perked up. Then as one they turned towards Adam's hiding spot. A low menacing growl rumbled from their chests. Adam's smirk remained.

"Oh? You're angry now huh?" he muttered stepping out from behind the tree. "Good. Come at me."

The largest of the remaining wolves snarled and lunged straight at him. Its sharp fangs gleamed as it closed the distance in a heartbeat.

Adam was ready.

He waited until the last second then sidestepped with an unnatural grace. The wolf's attack missed by inches. Before it could recover Adam struck a quick powerful punch from his bare fist connecting with its ribs.

[ -15 HP ]

The wolf howled in pain stumbling back. Adam gave it no time to recover. He dashed forward his movements precise and relentless. His knife which had returned to his hand automatically flashed as he stabbed.

[ -20 HP ]

The second wolf collapsed. Another system notification popped up.

[Level 4 Fang Wolf defeated!]

Adam barely glanced at it. His focus had already shifted to the next target. The last two wolves hesitated their instincts warring between fight and flight. Adam gave them no choice.

He lunged at the nearest one his knife a blur as it slashed through its throat. The wolf made a gurgling sound then dropped to the ground. Only one Fang Wolf remained.

The final wolf whimpered a sound of fear and sadness. Its ears flattened against its head. It took a shaky step back. "Running away?" Adam asked quietly his voice calm.

"Can't blame you." The wolf let out one last low growl of defeat then spun and bolted disappearing into the dense forest. Adam watched it go. He had gotten what he needed.

A blue system prompt appeared giving him his reward.

[Congratulations! You have defeated a Level 5 enemy as a Level 1 player. Bonus experience awarded]

His experience bar instantly filled. A new notification popped up.

[Your required experience points have been met for a level upgrade. Do you wish to level up?]

[Yes/No]

Adam stared at the prompt. This was where his system modification came into play. Without hesitation he selected "No." He was not leveling up yet. "This system is broken," he muttered a hint of a smile on his face "in all the right ways for me." He could now stack his potential gathering massive amounts of hidden experience. He would appear weak to others but secretly hold enough power to jump many levels at once.

Hidden in the forest among the bodies of the monsters he had just defeated Adam felt the weight of his knowledge and his unique powers. The game system might try to restrict him but he was already finding ways to gain incredible advantages.

He stood there for a moment longer watching the last of the wolf bodies disappear. His eyes gleamed with quiet determination. The path ahead was clear.
