Chapter 6: Harwin

Notes:

I have no idea how the timeline really works in the show as its kinda all over the place just like the ages so I'm just sorta fumbling with some stuff. Don't worry about it lol

Chapter Text

As Princess Rhaenyra's swornshield, it fell upon Ser Harwin Strong to teach her sons the way of battle and swordsplay. He had many years as commander of the goldcloaks of King's Landing where he would spend many a day sparring with the recruits, so when his princess asked he took leave for Dragonstone to begin their lessons personally.

However in a more discrete way, it allowed him to spend time with the two and help guide them into adulthood where they would be men worthy of their House. To see them grow from small babes to toddlers, to young boys and hopefully into adulthood as King Viserys's lasting peace still held true over the land. Yet even in peacetime a man must know how to wield a weapon and war could leap from unexpected places.

Jacaerys favoured the sword, the most commonly taught of weaponry. It made sense as Princess Rhaenyra's heir, due to Blackfyre no doubt being passed down to him when King Viserys passed as befitting the future king of Westeros. Jacaerys was a steady student, quick on his feet and eager to learn. A fine warrior in the making.

Yet still completely fumbling and lacking compared to his twin.

Ikit favoured poleaxes and halberds, and he adapted to the fighting style of such long, gangly weapons with a swiftness that took Harwin aback. He knew the term 'prodigy' was brandied about by any master-at-arms seeking to compliment the lordling they were tutoring, but Ikit's swift mastering of the halberd was beyond impressive. He fought like someone with years of experience even at the tender age of eight, something that grew even more pronounced as his body adapted to the weapon, to the point Harwin began to have trouble actually defeating him in spars.

Still, despite his skills there was an attitude in his fighting that bothered Harwin. Ikit's fighting style was sharp and vicious; he aimed for the eyes, the throat, the groin. All targets intended to mutilate, debilitate an opponent instead of a clean kill. Almost as if he wanted them disfigured, in addition to being dead.

He would also use his teeth, his nails, whatever was on hand if it came to trying to defeat his opponent, and Harwin got several bite marks over it when teaching the two on how to escape enemy grips and holds. It was an effective tactic admittedly, but there was a savagery to Ikit's fighting style that Harwin disliked. The way he'd try to instantly trip over an opponent so he could gore them while grounded, the way he'd slash for their eyes and bite at them if within reach.

That combined with the boy's natural aptitude for the halberd made Harwin of the opinion he would be one of the greatest warriors in Westeros, even moreso than the elusive Rogue Prince. Even without being bonded to a dragon like his brother, but there was a streak of cruelty in Ikit's fighting style that concerned Harwin.

Harwin had tried over the years to instill a sense of honour into Ikit yet the boy scoffed at each and every attempt.

"Every noble house had its words and actions that follow them through the ages," Harwin had lectured, "As family mottoes, wisdom, touchstones, great battles and victories. They are a prayers of sorts, to tell your children and grandchildren as years go past. Many stories boast of honor and glory, promised loyalty and truth, swore faith and courage. You must uphold that, my prince. The whole realm will look to you as an example, you and your brother. An example of honour and justice, of fairness and nobility."

"What does it matter in the way you kill-kill your enemies as long as they are dead in the end?" Ikit had retorted. "Slice their throats in their sleep, seal doors and light their burrows on fire, cut them open on battlefield or in the workshop. Long as they are slain-dead, how does it matter they get that way. Clan Targaryen words have the words of Fire and Blood. Good words, about killing your enemies and burning them to death as you should. Not about begging to the lesser things. Such useless words like honour. Bah. Go talk to littermate with such nonsense."

It displeased Harwin, and also worried him. Yet with how sweet natured both Jacaerys and Lucerys were, Harwin had to make an allowance for Ikit's more ruthless way of seeing things. If anything it reminded him of a certain wayward Rogue Prince. The blood of the dragon ran hot, after all.

And he would be lying if he claimed to not be disappointed that Jacaerys and Ikit weren't of his seed; Princess Rhaenyra would always be his lady, he was devoted to her through and through. At her command he would give his life to her, freely and without hesitation. So when she tentatively came to him, several moons after her marriage to Laenor and confessed her fears of being akin to Queen Aemma as her womb remained empty despite the couples various uncomfortable attempts, he did not hesitate to comfort her. He had loved her and would always do so. And not long after they lain together did Rhaenyra announce her pregnancy.

He remained vigilant and steadfast and a part of his heart soared when he was introduced to Jacaerys's small form with the dark brown hair and eyes. Then it just as quickly settled as he beheld Aenar, with his thick silver hair that was traditional of Velaryons. Even the brilliant green eyes Corlys explained were most likely from that side of his seafaring blood, citing the many times sailors had left Driftmark to explore the vast seas only to return with an exotic bride from a faraway land. It most likely was such a rare hue it had simply skipped countless generations only to abruptly reappear, much like how Jacaerys favoured the dark hair of his Baratheon or Arryn blood over that of traditional pale Targaryen colouring his mother held.

Then Aenar renamed himself, which was rather strange, but King Viserys was a doting grandsire and seemed to ignore any rumours of the tantrum that had resulted in the toddler being renamed to Ikit. A strange name that Hawin never knew the origin of but it was easily passed over when the festivities began. The tourney at King's Landing in celebration of the twin sons was long and boisterous even if Rhaenyra postponed it as long as she could, citing the vulnerabilities of infants.

"Such a brilliant stare, such a wondrous hue," the king had praised even as the little boy squinted up at him from Rhaenyra's arms. Then the princess showed the king how Ikit could already take a few steps before even being a year old and there was yet another feast thrown in honour of the prodigy.

Harwin was nonetheless glad to see the ship disappear in the distance from the walls of King's Landing as he remained as Commander of the City Watch, for Queen Alicent had wasted no time in spreading rumours the moment she could. Harwin could not provide proof it was her, yet everyone knew the queen's bitterness that King Viserys had ignored her multiple attempts to have Aegon named heir to the point her father Otto got banished as Hand for failing to drop the issue. Even the birth of yet another son did nothing to persuade King Viserys to put his daughter aside. So it was no doubt her venom that caused the spread of such rumours, even if Harwin had seen many nobles outright laugh at the claims Jacaerys and Ikit were not Laenor's the instant they saw that silver hair and odd coloured eyes. At the very least that was one that would not stick, and dismissed as folly.

As he visited Dragonstone as oft as his duties allowed he was careful in telling the princess of the rumours surrounding her children but Rhaenyra simply scoffed, not at all concerned.

Then Lucerys was born and it tried to stick again. However with Jacaerys as living proof of the persistence of dark hair with Baratheon and Arryn blood, it seemed to surge and flow like the tides. Many scoffed, others listened, in the end Harwin did not care for it. Rhaenyra never once said she had stopped sharing a bed with Laenor in his trips between Dragonstone and Driftmark, just as Harwin never asked. The two dragonriders were friends and companions to one another, even if their marriage would never grow passionate.

As the boys grew Harwin remained attentive and loyal, even if his concerns over Ikit remained as he split his time between King's Landing and Dragonstone. He knew far better than to voice them to Rhaenyra as she had proven to be merciless when it came to her children. Her handmaiden Elinda had brought word to the princess of a kitchen maid gossiping about Ikit, calling him 'a rat prince' in an obvious insult to Ikit's strangely sharp, oversized front teeth. The kitchen maid was then dragged up into Dragonstone's courtyard and unceremoniously thrown from the keep. Last Harwin knew she managed to beg her way onto a ship back to King's Landing, since all other possessions beyond those upon her body were kept by the keep for the insult. She was only lucky she did not lose her tongue for spreading such things as well.

Ikit cared nothing for the insult, if anything the boy found it amusing. Harwin did note how he had far sharper features than his twin, who retained a more rounded, soft face, but Ikit's was the sharply ethereal beauty of a Targaryen that was not marred by his sharp teeth and burning green eyes. If anything the hue more oft reminded Harwin of Syrax's own gaze, and was just as piercing.

He was also as antisocial as a dragon. While the wyrms would occasionally tolerate one another they hardly spent days in each others company. Ikit was much the same, spending most of his time trying to read his way through the entire collection of books and scrolls upon Dragonstone while ignoring the majority in the castle. He only ever seemed interested in interacting with his family. His hostile attitude towards everyone else also made them not have much desire to interact with the young prince, even if he seemed oddly dedicated to sending letters to the king.

Of course King Viserys seemed determined to embrace that, as Princess Rhaenyra finally had to bow to her father's repeated requests that she join him at King's Landing to the point Harwin was there to personally escort the princess. She had visited sporadically over the years for months at a time until returning to her seat as Princess of Dragonstone, but with the princess's third pregnancy the king wished for his daughter to be close in the last few months of it.

As much as Rhaenyra was favoured by her father she could still not deny an outright summons by the king so before the week finished they were leaving Dragonstone and sailing for the capital.

It was there Harwin found himself in conversation with a morose Jacaerys, having found the lad sitting against the cabin of ship and plucking at his tunic in fidgeting movements. The boy's face was far too somber for one so young.

"I know the capital can not to be everyone's tastes, yet you seem more eager to jump into the Blackwater," Harwin jested lightly.

The boy blinked up at him, brown eyes large like a startled doe. Still, he made no protest as Harwin sat down next to him with a rattle of armour.

"I suppose it's nice to visit," Jacaerys said slowly. His fingers twisted at the hem of his tunic, jittery and unsure.

"It still has its smell," Harwin jested lightly. "But the city is well kept, and the Red Keep you have not visited in some time. You will be able to spend time with your uncles and aunt, along with the king himself, as the princess sees through the last month of her pregnancy in the greatest of safety."

"I want Mother to be comfortable," Jace said. "Of course we do. It's just...It's stupid."

"What ails you? I am the princess's swornshield, I will not violate your confidence regardless of how foolish you believe it is," Harwin said gently even as he placed a calloused hand on the prince's shoulder. It did not matter if Jacaerys wasn't his, Harwin would not hesitate to give his life in an instant for any of Rhaenyra's children.

"My brother is so much better than me," Jacaerys confessed. "He's so smart, Maester Gerardys said he's never heard of anyone advancing as quickly. Same with mathematics, writing, High Valyrian, even swordsplay he's so much better. I bet the king thinks so as well."

"Yes, your brother is the best student I've ever had," Harwin agreed. "I do believe he'll become one of the greatest warriors Westeros has ever seen or ever will see."

Jace's face fell.

"But that isn't the most important aspect of your brother," Harwin continued. "He may be immensely gifted in so many aspects, but he lacks one key thing you have in ample qualities."

"What's that?"

"In being good with people," Harwin said while looking directly at Jacaerys, one hand on his shoulder. "That is one of the greatest traits a king, a lord, or any ruler, can have. King Jaehaerys was known as the Conciliator for bringing the Seven Kingdoms together. Aegon the Conqueror may have drawn them into his court with fire and blood yet King Jaehaerys was the one to sooth the wounds and truly make us a united kingdom. Both he and his wife, Alysanne the Good Queen, would always use their words first. They were the bond that held true for the great peace which has spread over the lands, a peace King Viserys inherited. Your brother may be an exemplary warrior and immensely intelligence, yet we all know he detests the company of most. You can exceed in some places and fall short in others, for this matter you and your brother compliment one another."

Harwin squeezed Jace's shoulder as he continued, "He is your brother- even more than that, he is your twin. Do not see him as an adversary or someone to compare yourself to. You see all his strength, yet forget his weaknesses. Just as you have strengths and weaknesses. See him and think of how you can aid him, just as he would aid you. Prince Ikit does not have a dragon yet you do. Does that mean you think lesser of him, because his egg did not hatch whilst yours did?"

Jace's expression grew thoughtful, with guilt now tugging at the corners of his mouth.

After a moment Harwin dared to push forward with, "I would hate to see a schism grow between you two, akin to the likes that ails King Viserys and Prince Daemon."

"The Rogue Prince?"

"Just so," Harwin nodded. "They were much close in their youth. Yet life in King's Landing pushed them apart, the whispers and rumours and nudges by others. He was the Commander of the City Watch before me, and many still hold loyal to him, speak well of his ferocity and charisma. Prince Daemon was considered a vicious man with just as sharp a tongue, and it is why he has not been seen in Westeros for many years for the quarrel between himself and King Viserys. Yet I always thought how much stronger they would be if they remained together. Brothers guarding brothers, dragons guarding dragons. Instead they were shuffled as rivals to one another by insidious whispers and their relationship faltered and fell. Something which still causes the king great grief."

That was not a lie; while Harwin had not been close with the Rogue Prince, he knew enough King Viserys still missed his short tempered brother regardless of their past fighting. And for all of Otto Hightower's warnings to the king for his brother's ambition for the Iron Throne and accusing him of being another Maegor the Cruel, the Rogue Prince gave over his crown of the Stepstones and King Viserys allowed Daemon to present his daughters with Lady Laena to court. Even now with Daemon close with Westeros the tension between the two brothers did not cease and Harwin had no wish for such a thing to return with Jacaerys and Ikit. He knew those who sided Green would want such a thing.

"So I'm being silly," Jace muttered, scrubbing at his face. Guilt was now wrought upon it.

"We all act out of sorts some time," Harwin reassured him. "Doubts, unease, misgivings- they are all a part of growing up. Even moreso for a princeling. Just remember that he is your kin, you are bound to protect one another. Never forget that, regardless of how he may excel and you may not. You are family."

It was a lesson that almost felt woefully inadequate during their stay at King's Landing. Harwin did not think much of Queen Alicent's sons- one, despite only being thirteen years of age, was tipsy and overly fond of wine already. Aemond was more quiet but withdrawn and unsure while Helaena reminded Harwin of the stories about Princess Daella, the simple and dimwitted daughter of King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne.

Ikit was indifferent at best and outright jeering at worst towards his uncles and ignored his aunt entirely. At one point Harwin even caught him hissing at Aegon when his uncle tried to grab at his arm. After that the prince wisely kept his distance from his more temperamental nephew. Jacaerys and Lucerys were far more partial to spending time with their kin even if Harwin worried over Aegon's behaviour and persistent drunkenness. Though through words of Elinda, the princess's handmaiden, he learned that Ikit did seek out family company yet it was only that of the king.

After some thought Harwin could understand why as out of all Rhaenyra's children Ikit had the greatest fascination with Old Valyria and he was already spending long days in the expansive library within the Red Keep. So it stood to reason he would go to his grandsire for ever more knowledge. The king himself seemed overjoyed at the persistent company of his grandson, not at all bothered by Ikit's fairly blunt and irritable personality. Harwin knew it was mostly due to the king's almost overwhelming scent of sickness and medicine that left his other two grandsons rather remiss of his company but Ikit was never bothered.

As Rhaenyra went through the days leading up to birth she still insisted upon a family dinner each night despite her exhaustion. Harwin kept as close as he could without raising eyebrows as it was fitting for a sworn shield to remain close, despite his warring duties to the City Watch.

King's Landing was not a friend to Princess Rhaenyra and, by extension, her sons. So when they took supper it was deep within the guest apartments where Rhaenyra, Laenor and their children stayed.

"Den mother?" Ikit asked, eyeing Harwin with that brilliant green gaze before glancing to the one empty chair at the table.

"Princess Rhaenyra is being seen to by the midwives," Harwin said, "She regrets she will not be attending this dinner."

"So she is birthing the new litter already?"

"She has not gone into labour just yet, it is simply some precautions and preparations," Laenor said, well used to his son's particulars even if Harwin frowned at the odd terms.

Ikit grunted, accepting the explanation before he started to eat. As always, he grasped the fork and knife oddly as if using them for the first time. The boy more oft than not would start eating with his hands if left alone. Laenor certainly encouraged that habit, despite the rows it would start with him and Rhaenyra. Velaryons never pulled faces at eating fish that way, picking at bones and scraping scales between their teeth or using their hands to split open a crab shell. The Sea Snake Corlys certainly found it funny whenever he witnessed it.

When Rhaenyra did return later in the evening long after supper was done, exhausted but healthy, she came bearing the news her labours should start within the week.

"A bit sooner that expected but they say the babe is healthy and large so not one for patience," Rhaenyra said with a wry smile.

Harwin wanted to linger more yet knew he was already pushing the limits of courtly etiquette even as the princess's sworn shield. The following days Rhaenyra was tired and pained, her army of maids and midwives an attentive throng about her. Her sons were a mixture of intrigued and nervous, or apathetic like Ikit who was more interested in reading his various books.

When Rhaenyra did fall into her labours Harwin took it upon himself to keep Jace, Ikit and Luke company while Laenor remained at the birthing apartments where Rhaenyra was. As husband, it was tradition he be the first man to lay eyes upon the newborn and then they would bless the babe with a name, after guarding his wife through her labours.

The trio spent their time in the private guest apartments, Lucerys and Jacaerys playing with their various toys while Ikit was writing in one of his numerous books. Harwin tried to look over what the princeling was writing about, but he could not read the foreign language. Ikit did not join his brothers even as time passed, simply content with his scribbling while Jace and Luke chattered and played. All three were wearing the deep blue of House Velaryon, with silver accents that matched Ikit's hair.

"We should get an egg for the baby," Jacaerys then suggested, even as the sun passed noon and there was no sign of Rhaenyra.

Lucerys immediately jumped onto that suggestion, with the two begging and pleading to Harwin until he gave in. They could not help Rhaenyra while she was in her labours as it was a battle for women alone, and while they had been patient thus far Harwin knew some women would spend days in their birthing bed. Keeping the trio distracted would allow the princess to focus upon her duty and with the imminent newborn Harwin felt letting them fetch an egg for their newest sibling would be no trouble.

Even Ikit was roused from his writing, even if he seemed more irritated about it, but nonetheless he allowed Jace and Luke to lead him from the room. Harwin knew better than trying to do the same for the surly Driftmark heir, following at a more leisurely pace behind them. Even seeing the three brothers walking together down the halls made the differences apparent with Luke and Jace were chatting happily to one another, Luke clinging to his brother's arms while Ikit remained slightly behind them and silent.

Ikit stalked, for lack of a better word. His steps feather-light, shoulders hunched and hands partially spread at his sides akin to claws. Like he was ready to pounce on anyone he came across, in sharp contrast to the lackadaisical manner of his brothers. Almost like he wasn't a child at all, instead some hunting dog loping along at their heels.

Harwin had to shake off that uncharitable thought; regardless of how antisocial and introverted Ikit was along with his strange mannerisms, the boy was one of Princess Rhaenyra's sons. It would do him no good to be swayed by the petty rumours that already swept through the Red Keep by a certain vindictive queen. If anything, Ikit's more volatile personality in contrast to his gentle brothers could be a boon in some years, as Harwin was no fool as to what could happen.

Keeping to his duty, Harwin followed the trio as they made their way to the immense Dragonpit looming over the city. The air was calm and clear, yet the instant they passed through the huge doors of the great dome the air shifted, growing heated and stifling as the scent of brimstone and burnt meat. Harwin was never particularly fond of the Dragonpit, the grand creatures of House Targaryen were not for the likes of him. So he stayed back at a respectful distance as Jacaerys talked to the head dragonkeeper, an older man whose dark skin was marred by several long-healed burns scarring his face.

The head dragonkeeper only spoke in High Valyrian, the ancient language well fitting for the Dragonpit even if Jace's round features were furrowed and confused when the man finished.

"He says pick-choose from these five," Ikit translated irritably, green eyes flashing in the dim lighting as he pointed to a line of braziers at the wall. It was odd, how even being the same age as Jace Ikit, with his cold expressions, seemed years older.

"Can I pick?" Lucerys asked, reaching out to tug on Ikit's hand. His brother huffed, fingers flexing oddly, but didn't knock him away.

"I don't care," was the blunt response.

"Jace? Can I?"

At Jace's nod and push, Luke all but ran over to the spread of dragon eggs to hem and haw over which to present to their newest sibling.

The egg Lucerys eventually picked was a pale violet with deep purple swirls across the scaled shell. A brazier was lit for them with the egg sealed within, carried by two of the dragonkeepers as they returned back to the chambers to await Rhaenyra. Lucerys wondered aloud how the dragon would look when hatched, like his Arrax which had hatched pure white until his wings grew crimson when he reached a year of age so maybe the colouring could change. Jace also spoke of Vermax- there had been further dragon training planned, but their excitement over a new egg had insisted they take it and then wait for their mother right away. Harwin hadn't the heart to scold them for skipping a lesson. Like before Ikit followed behind. Observing more than anything, his angular features giving nothing away.

"You'll get your dragon one day, my prince," Harwin murmured.

A flicker of a green stare as Ikit cocked his head to the side before he smiled at Harwin. It was an unpleasant expression.

Back at the rooms the dragonkeepers settled the brazier in place before returning to the pit, with Jacaerys swearing to head there for Vermax as soon as Rhaenyra returned with their newest sibling. Ikit spoke in a brief flicker of Valyrian before the keepers left, and Harwin was curious as to how they bowed to him before closing the door. Ikit then went to sit in the chair by the window, obviously choosing to go back to his odd writings in his book, while Jace and Luke chattered to each other about the potential hatchling.

They were interrupted once by a maid bearing a tray of fruit, bread and small meat pies which Harwin took, his mood substantially lifting when the young girl informed him of Rhaenyra's birth to a healthy baby boy and she should return soon.

A son. Wondrous news.

There was a pang of longing in his chest as he fed the three princes, trying to struggle with his hope that just perhaps this one may be his. Yet most of Rhaenyra's sons favoured her Arryn blood, as Ikit's Velaryon silver hair was gleaming bright at his position at the window. Will there be another set of green eyes, of Laenor's line? Harwin wondered yet ultimately did not care- he would love and guard them all the same.

"Will Mother be here soon?" Jacaerys asked, as he gave the last pie to Ikit who snapped it down whole with a flash of his overly sharp teeth.

"When the princess is ready," he assured them. "Now, why don't you play some games or see to your toys in the meanwhile? I have no doubt she will be here soon."

"Can you tell us another one of your stories to help pass the time, brother?" Lucerys then asked Ikit, sitting on the floor before him.

"What about the Nagash one? The Great Necromancer. The one where the world almost ends," Jace said, joining Luke.

"Hmm," Ikit tapped one of his long nails against his chin before shutting his book and saying, "No, this time I will tell you about the War of Eight Peaks. Of the Dwarf fortress-stronghold falling, the taking the fabled Karak Eight Peaks with the slaughtering within. How the great Clan Skryre was the one to break-submit the Dwarf fortress when all others failed."

"What's a Dwarf?"

Regardless of any other criticism for Ikit, he was a marvelous storyteller and Harwin found himself also heavily engrossed in Ikit's wild fable about a fantastical battle between inhuman races and their otherworldly weapons like warpfire throwers which seemed to be handheld devices that breathed magical fire like dragons.

Even if some aspects of the story were more unrealistic than others, like Ikit talking about how the Dwarfs were assaulted by great legion of feral rats the size of horses. It could be an effective fear strategy even if he had to bite his tongue to avoid scolding Ikit for making his fable too scary and otherworldly for Lucerys as he spoke of the battles that resulted in the crumbling of the great Everlasting Realm of the Dwarfs.

Then just as the tale came to a conclusion the door opened and Rhaenyra entered the room, sweat-slicked and exhausted with Laenor close behind with a blanket-wrapped bundle in his arms.

"Mother!" Jace jumped to his feet, quickly running to the princess with Luke at his heels. Ikit rose at a more sedate pace, eyeing Laenor as he sniffed several times.

Meanwhile Jace and Luke seemed oblivious to the way Rhaenyra was shaking as they moved past her to the covered brazier, minute tremors making her grip weak on the chair she leaned against it. Harwin offered his arm to her, which she gratefully latched onto.

"We chose an egg for the baby," Lucerys explained, even as Jace tugged up the dense lid to show the scaled egg nestled within.

"Ah, that looks like the perfect one," Rhaenyra's smile was strained, even as she slowly lowered herself down into the chair with Harwin's aid.

"It's not every day a dragon egg leaves the pit, princess," Harwin said in formal tones as he moved closer to Laenor. "I thought it best to escort the lads."

"Laenor and I thank you, Commander," Rhaenyra was sweaty, hair damp and loose around her face with her clothing rumpled, yet Harwin never thought her more beautiful. Ikit moved ever closer, footsteps silent.

"Another boy, I heard," Harwin continued. Rhaenyra gave him a soft smile and a nod.

"What a fine knight you're going to make, hm?" Laenor was cooing down at the slumbering infant, features bright with adoration.

After a moment of hesitation, Harwin asked, "Might I?"

As Laenor looked up, almost confused, Rhaenyra said gently, "Ser Harwin wishes to be introduced to Joffrey."

Ah, so the newest edition was named for the companion Laenor lost so many years ago. It was still something that stung with Laenor, Harwin knew, even if there were rumours about his newest companion Qarl. Yet the shadow of Ser Joffrey's murder was still known to many and still bore some wounds. At how Ser Criston was allowed to murder a highborn guest before everyone yet suffer no consequences for Queen Alicent swooped in. The fact she surrounded herself with open murderers made him far less inclined to ever listen to her whispers. Harwin would never speak ill of his king yet his leash was far too long on his wife.

Pushing away the tide of morbid thoughts, Harwin focused back upon the present where the delicate newborn was being carefully deposited into his arms. So small, so perfect. The babe was a soft weight in his arms, asleep and wrinkled. Such a stranger.

"Father, can I please hold Joffrey?" Lucerys asked to Laenor, already reaching for the baby.

Laenor scolded him, quickly fending off both Lucerys and Jacaerys as they tried to reach for their newest sibling regardless of their pleas.

"No!" Laenor said sternly, herding the two towards the doors. "Back to the Dragonpit for you, especially you Jace. You haven't tended to Vermax and they're liable to send out a search party. Ikit, you go along as well. Your mother needs rest."

Ikit lingered behind for a brief movement, moving forward so he could sniff at Joffrey like an inquisitive hound. Harwin had to fight off the strange ripple of fear he felt, at seeing Ikit's partially open mouth with his abnormally sharp front teeth so close to the baby as he sniffed.

Luke and Jace were already out the room, Laenor waiting in the doorway for his more temperamental son, when Ikit said to Rhaenyra, "You are bleeding, den mother. You should see to that."

Then he was gone, leaving Harwin watching at the now shut door in concern before looking to Rhaenyra from where she was slumped in the chair.

The princess flushed, "I will have the maids see to me soon enough. Birth is not without pain or blood."

It was obvious she didn't want him to press it further, already exhausted, so Harwin made his attention shift to the warm bundle in his arms. Joffrey was in slumber, small face lax and soft.

Harwin had to wonder if Joffrey's eyes were brown like Jace and Luke's, or if he had taken a more unnatural hue like Ikit. Or purple like his mother.

"You're asleep in front of the Commander of the City Watch," he chided the babe gently. "Terrible lack of respect."

"I'm afraid a certain insolence runs in the family," was Rhaenyra's tired, yet fond, reply.

Harwin smiled, so many of his troubles seemingly ebbing away in her company.

Yet soon enough there was a knock at the door, Elinda waiting silently and faithfully. Harwin, though reluctant, passed Joffrey to the maid and then took his leave. Rhaenyra no doubt would rest and with her sons at the Dragonpit, Harwin saw to his duties to the goldcloaks.

The following day he ended up taking the boys down to the courtyard of the Red Keep to continue their sparring lessons. It would help stop them from bothering Rhaenyra, as while she never complained Harwin had seen how wan she looked that morning so he quickly shepherded her sons away with him.

Apparently yesterday Ikit had left before returning to the Dragonpit, instead choosing to spend his afternoon with the king. From some whispers, that caused some strife with Queen Alicent but the king had all but sent her from the room like a misbehaving child. Harwin tried not to feel too pleased at the rumour, instead sticking back into professionalism as down in the courtyard Prince Aegon and Aemond were also getting ready, with Ser Criston Cole as their minder.

"Why are they wearing green?" Ikit asked loudly the moment he spotted his uncles as Harwin shepherded them forward. "Are their sewing servants too stupid-dumb to know dragon clan is of black and red?"

Lucerys giggled at his brother's side while Aemond's face flushed.

Ikit didn't bother partaking after his intital words however, instead sitting on one of the benches against the wall and going back to writing in one of his numerous journals. Harwin saw no need to antagonize the prince or press him into it, considering he already knew of the boy's prowess, so he focused his attention upon Jacaerys and Lucerys.

He was aware of Aegon and Aemond as well, keeping a close watch on them as they struck at the straw-filled training dummies while Ser Criston directed them. Aegon was more sure, if only from more experience in sparring due to his age, and Harwin had to wonder how well he would truly be in a fight if only he dedicated himself. It was an uncharitable thought, vindicated when the young prince was distracted by a gaggle of maids passing through the courtyard which he paused to leer at.

Harwin wasn't the only one to notice, Ser Criston snapping at Aegon to focus. He then chose to spar with the two princelings, easily dodging both Aegon and Aemond's strikes with the wooden swords, quick and sure on his feet to move with a fluidity many in the courtyard eyes with envy. Regardless of his bloody history or distasteful personality, Harwin knew Ser Criston had gained his reputation across Westeros as a exceptionally skilled warrior for a reason.

"Weapons up, boys," Harwin chided to the duo gently as before them Ser Criston soundly trounced the two princes. "Give your enemies no quarter."

Both Jace and Luke quickly fixed their grips upon the training swords, looking abashed at the scolding. Aemond and Aegon shuffled back after being beaten with Aegon rubbing at his arm and pouting.

"It seems the younger boys could do better with a bit of your attention, Ser Criston," Harwin then said, finishing his sharpening of the sword.

Ser Criston instantly glared, "You question my method of instruction, ser?"

"Oh, I merely suggest that method be applied to all your pupils," Harwin countered easily, walking past the Kingsguard to place the sword upon one of the displays.

"Very well," the Kingsguard said, before stepping forward and grabbing Jace roughly by the collar of his armour. "Jacaerys come here. Spar with Aegon. Eldest son against eldest son."

From his bench Ikit looked up.

"It's hardly a fair match," Harwin said, walking back towards the dummies. Both Aemond and Lucerys stood to the side, Luke looking nervous while Aemond eager. Meanwhile in the small sparring ring the comparison between Aegon and Jacaerys was apparent, Aegon a head taller than his nephew.

"I know you've never seen true battle, ser, but when steel is drawn a fair match isn't something anyone should expect," Ser Criston replied arrogantly.

Harwin scowled but didn't argue.

"Blades up," Ser Criston barked.

The fight was, as Harwin expected, quite one sided. Jace was a good student but he was still just a lad and facing a larger opponent.

When Aegon shoved Jacaerys down, Harwin was pleased that Jace didn't just give up and instead forced himself back to his feet to reengage the fight. It was only when Aegon used one of the straw dummies, pushing it over to try and knock Jace down, did Harwin intervene. At the very least Ser Criston agreed with his protest and scolded Aegon for it as they briefly separated the two.

Ikit was still watching silently from his seat, book open on his lap as his green eyes narrowed.

The spar resumed in much the same way, Harwin struggling to stop himself from intervening as Aegon struck hard and fast. He ended up kicking Jace in the chest from the encouragement of Ser Criston, but it was when Aegon started beating at Jace with the wooden sword as the boy lay helpless on the ground did Harwin move.

"Enough!" he thundered, easily seizing Aegon and hurling him away from Jacaerys.

Immediately Aegon started shrieking, "You dare put hands on me?!"

"Aegon!" the shout from the king, who had been watching the spectacle from the ramparts with Lyonel, made Aegon snap his mouth shut.

"You forget yourself, Strong," Ser Criston sneered. "That is the prince."

Harwin glared back at him, "As is Jacaerys."

The two men stared at each other, Harwin in contempt and Ser Criston all bloated arrogance. Off to the side Jace, Luke, Aemond and Aegon were glancing between them. Jace was also rubbing at his arms, Luke pressed close to his side, which made Harwin's temper flare.

Then another idea came to him. Perhaps it was out of spite or confidence, but after a moment Harwin spoke loudly, never breaking eye contact with Ser Criston as he called, "Prince Ikit. You have spent all this time training with your book. Come join us here."

Ser Criston seemed to be heavily restraining the urge to roll his eyes as he said, "I know how highly you speak of Prince Ikit's talents to curry favour with the princess but I do not dole out praise so easily." An ugly look twisted up Ser Criston's features as he continued, "Your interest in the princeling's training is quite unusual, commander, as is your constant praise and flattery. Most men would only have that kind of devotion towards-"

"I am here," Ikit interrupted in decidedly bored tones. He held one of the sparring poleaxes, wooden and blunt like every other sparring weapon.

"You said first born against first born, so now let us see the second sons spar," Harwin said, gesturing to where Aemond was watching.

Ser Criston glared before his features shuttered away to controlled blankness, stepping back as he beckoned Aemond forward.

Harwin only briefly paused to lean down to Ikit's ear, voice barely a whisper, "Remember this is a spar, young prince. Do not draw blood. Seek to defeat him quick and clean and show them how competently you can do so. Humilate without harm."

A snort from the silver haired prince but he nodded, so Harwin felt comfortable to retreat from the sparring circle. He noticed how near all of the people in the courtyard, from the guards, maids, and assorted servants, were now also watching. King Viserys and Lord Lyonel were still watching from the ramparts along with the remaining Kingsguard. Both Luke and Jace seemed more anxious for their brother.

Yet not even after ten seconds of the match starting, Ikit had defeated Aemond. He quickly dodged several swipes from Aemond's sword, moving with unerving fluidity before he ducked underneath a lunge. He then smacked Aemond hard in the side of the head with the blunt head of the poleaxe, knocking Aemond over to go sprawling in the dirt. His sword went skidding off to the side and Aemond lay on the ground, stunned.

When he finally got up there was a red welt along his left temple, the prince looking almost shocked as Ikit rested his poleaxe across his shoulders and gave his uncle a toothy grin.

"I do not dole out praise without cause, Ser Criston, as you can see," Harwin declared. The Kingsguard glared at him, expression showing only contempt.

"Perhaps. Then Aegon should be a fit for him."

"Will he squeal-scream if I touch him like before with Strong?" Ikit asked, making Lucerys giggle and one of the maids watching to hastily cover her mouth.

"I'll make you squeal," Aegon hissed, stalking forward.

The fight ended even quicker than the one against Aemond.

To add to the insult, Ikit didn't even use his sparring weapon. Instead he threw it aside the moment Aegon lunged, with Aegon trying to do the same two-handed overhead blow he had used on Jace.

Ikit simply ducked between Aegon's legs, as quick as a cat, then jumped up to seize the prince's long hair in both hands. He yanked hard, rolling Aegon over his shoulder and back to slam Aegon so hard onto the ground so hard the air was knocked from his lungs. As Aegon lay face first on the ground wheezing Ikit pounced onto his back, yanking Aegon's head up with a fist tight in his uncle's hair and pressing Aegon's own wooden blade against his throat.

There a brief pause of stunned silence and then Luke burst out, "You're so fast, brother!"

Someone clapped over by the gates and Jace was jumping up and down, quickly joining with his own applause. Around them murmurs of astonishment filled the air even as Ikit jumped off Aegon and gave a flourishing bow.

"Wonderful, just wonderful!" King Viserys called out from above.

"Well done, my prince," Harwin praised, catching himself before he could clap Ikit on the shoulder. "As expected of your talents."

Aegon unsteadily got to his feet, looking more confused than angry by what had happened. His pale hair was messy, smeared with dirt, and he shuffled back to where Aemond was while looking like a lost cat.

Ser Criston said nothing for a long moment, even as more people in the courtyard heaped their praises upon the silver haired prince who preened happily. Then an ugly gleam came to the Kingsguard's eyes, one that made Harwin immediately on edge.

"Perhaps, then, I could be a worthy opponent for the prince since he faced no challenge," Ser Criston offered. "As I offered for both Aegon and Aemond."

"Against just a boy it is-"

"I can do such a thing," Ikit said, cutting over Harwin with a wave of his hand. "What shall he do, kill-kill me right here? This is not a wedding."

Someone gasped and Ser Criston's face flushed as hatred flared in his black eyes. Aemond looked shocked while Aegon, Luke and Jace were confused. Harwin himself nearly let out a burst of unseemly laughter himself, completely caught off guard by the audacity.

Ikit grabbed his poleaxe, ignoring everyones reactions, while Ser Criston readied his wooden sword.

It was almost comical, a child of eight years facing a Kingsguard yet everyone, even the king himself, seemed engrossed it in.

They traded blows, Ikit already knowing how to dodge attacks and dance out of reach with his much longer weapon. His delicate Valyrian features were pinched in concentration, eyes bright and unblinking. Ser Criston's face was just as wooden, expression glacial as he kept trying to force Ikit into defeat but unable to pin the prince down. Both Jace and Luke were jumping up and down, cheering on their brother. Aegon looked just as facinated while Aemond seemed the most unsure.

Yet slowly the outcome began to grow apparent, Ikit grimacing as he blocked another blow and had to keep hunching his posture to avoid Ser Criston's sword. For all his faults the Kingsguard was one of the greatest swordsmen in the realm and Ikit was still a child regardless of how valiantly he was fighting.

Harwin felt himself grow more and more tense as Ser Criston struck Ikit several times, hard blows across the front and side. Far too hard to be directed for a child. Ikit flinched each time, hunching his shoulders and grimacing to look no more than the boy he was.

And then Ser Criston did it.

His attention shifted away from Prince Ikit as the boy cringed from another hard blow, arrogance fueling it, as he shot a look at Harwin. A sneer twisting his lips, eyes narrowed, attention completely moved from the silver haired prince before him and then Ikit burst into aburdly fast movement.

He shot forward, darting to Ser Criston's back and jamming the point of his wooden poleaxe into Ser Criston's armour, directly behind his knee. The knight's leg crumbled, the other following suit as Ikit kicked it hard in the near same instant. Harwin saw first hand the look of arrogance upon Ser Criston's face twitch to shock as Ikit knocked him down before the prince slammed his full weight into Ser Criston's back and knocked him down entirely.

It was a farce, Harwin realized. Ikit had been smart enough to see the sniping between Harwin himself and Ser Criston, and had intentionally made himself start fumbling and retreating during the spar as it prolonged. Knowing Ser Criston would wordlessly gloat to Harwin, would look away from his opponent to sneer at Harwin and give Ikit the opportunity to strike.

Ser Criston was experienced enough to not release his sword, expression enraged as he quickly shoved himself back up to his feet. By then Ikit had latched onto his back, yanking his poleaxe up in both hands so it slammed against Ser Criston's throat and essentially choking him.

The man stumbled, expression enraged, as he tried to reach up to yank Ikit from him. His sword struck Ikit in the side of the head several times yet the boy refused to release him, seemingly intent on throttling the Kingsguard into unconciousness which, considering how red his face was going, seemed remarkably likely.

"Go, brother! Win, win!" Luke was jumping up and down, but Harwin knew he had to intevene as yet another hard blow stuck Ikit in the head.

"Alright, that is enough!" Harwin bellowed, leaping forward to seize Ikit around the midriff to pry him off.

The boy hissed at him like a wild beast but nonetheless released Ser Criston, the knight stumbling forward with a gasp as both wooden weapons went scattering across the ground. Around them the courtyard burst into noise, people pointing and talking in a sharp drone that began to drown everything else.

"Worthless-incompetent fool. I win," Ikit gloated.

"Twisted creature!" Ser Criston hissed back at the prince, barely audible but the sheer hate in his voice made Harwin shove Ikit protectvely behind him. Ser Criston glared at him, even as the man rubbed at the red mark across his throat, "Digusting beast, no doubt born of that spoiled cunt's deparvity and sin-"

Harwin's fist smashed into Ser Criston's face, shutting him up.

It was quickly followed a flurry of shouts, rage and scolding, until Harwin found himself dragged off Ser Criston's bleeding body to be dragged back into the Red Keep to be froced before his enraged father. Lyonel had sent the guards out, the Lord Hand's expression furious.

"What have you done?" Lyonel demanded.

"He laid insults against the princess," Harwin said, furious as to why that wasn't being understood. His body still thrummed from the fight, the insult so freely uttered. "The things he uttered, if the king himself heard-"

"They heard nothing," Lyonel snapped. "Everyone only saw you beat a man for no reason, to shatter the nose and bloody the face of a knight of the Kingsguard. The queen has demanded action be taken, for you provoking such violence before the princes! In what should be sparring, you drew blood and then continued to beat a man as he lay on the ground defeated. You've already been expelled from your position as Commander of the City Watch, as the queen demanded. Even now she is trying to demand more."

"I only did so to defend the honour of the princess-"

"An honour you lend rumours to with such violent actions," Lyonel said coldly. "You know as well as I do that there are few allies here for her. Many listen to the whispers, want to bring unease and dishonour to Princess Rhaenyra. Rumours you fuel with such actions. They will call her reasoning, her decision making and ability to rule, into question as future queen if she keeps such a man as her swornshield. One who assaults anyone by chance or whim. And then there are those snide insinuations she disgraces her marriage vow with you, with her children as begot as well."

"Spread rumours by who, a queen who keeps a known murderer by her side?!"

Harwin couldn't believe why his father was so insistent upon believing Alicent's lies; anyone with eyes could see Ikit was of Velaryon stock with his silver hair and strange eyes, then his features with their ethereal beauty made it no doubt he was the son of both Valyrian and Velaryon. It did not matter how 'plain featured' his siblings were, Ikit was living breathing proof of Laenor's blood whilst Jacaerys was there showing the late Queen Aemma's Arryn blood. And even Baratheon blood upon Laenor's side, through his grandmother. Both known for their brown or black hair. And now listening to Alicent, as if she hadn't chosen to protect Ser Criston when he blatantly killed a noble guest.

Yet his father was clear; he was to remove himself from King's Landing and return to Harrenhall to take his position as lord considering his role within the goldcloaks was gone and that his position at Rhaenyra's side hurt her integrity and brought her reasoning to question. His actions in bloodying a Kingsguard before the king himself was the final straw.

Harwin's face was wooden as Lyonel lectured him as all he could think was the hatred in Ser Criston's eyes. The rumours of bloody footprints in Rhaenyra's wake.

"And to stop you from doing anything stupid, I will personally escort you back to Harrenhall," Lyonel said, expression unmoving and making Harwin bristle. "I have already asked for a leave of absence from the king, which he has granted. I will personally oversee your wedding and once a bedding is confirmed, I will return to King's Landing to resume my duties as Hand. You, however, will remain in Harrenhall."

"...As you command, Lord Hand," Harwin answered coldly.

Father and son stared at each other, before Lyonel seemed to see Harwin's bitter reignation, and nodded. Then Harwin was alone.

Such was their haste Harwin was only given a single night of rest until he was to leave. He just felt tired now, Ser Criston's insults childish and snide yet they had worked. He just dispised how much the queen's hate had infested the Red Keep. At how oblivious King Viserys was to his hateful wife and those she surrounded herself with.

But his time in King's Landing was done, he was to be dragged back to his family's keep and there he would stay.

Away from King's Landing.

He would see it again until when Rhaenyra was crowned and he was called to see the coronation, perhaps with his own wife and children in attendence with him. It was a bitter comfort but Rhaenyra was not his. She had let him love her over the years but her sons were of fire and blood, salt and sea, and he was a Strong of the First Men. How long had it been since he had prayed to a heart tree?

Still, as swornshield he was to remove himself from Rhaenyra's service personally. A great insult but both of them would know why. And he had to tell her sons why their mentor was leaving, try to make it plain that he still cared despite being sent away from them.

It stung when Rhaenyra refused to speak to him the entire time when he said his goodbyes at the apartments. Instead she just stared blankly at him, Joffrey's swaddled form held in her arms, so instead he went to where a confused Lucerys and Jacaerys were. Ikit was no where to be found.

"Be good to your mother, lads. I'll visit when I can but that may be some time. I haven't been home for...well, it is time for me to wed and settle down," he tried to explain.

Jace retreated from him, going to Rhaenyra's side while Luke remained sitting next to the braizer with the dragon egg. Both boys were clearly upset, Luke refusing to look at him and instead frowning at the scaled form of the egg as he clung to the table.

"Is it because of what happened in the sparring session?" Jace finally asked quietly, fingers tugging at his sleeve. "I...I should have beat Aegon. If I did, none of this would've happened."

"No," Harwin said immeditely, reaching out to ruffle Jace's hair. "There is...far more at play than that. You did wonderfully, just like your brothers. Just as Ikit did wonderfully. It is simply time for me to return to my House, to marry and rule over Harrenhall as expected of a lord. And when I do return to King's Landing in the future I expect you to have become the fine warrior I know you can be. You can show me."

After a moment Jace nodded, brown eyes still downcast, "Alright. I will train, just like you showed me."

Rhaenyra just gave Harwin a cold look, but Harwin could see the betrayal in her purple eyes. He had let himself be sloppy and easily provoked now her children were at more risk. After a moment Harwin managed to say, "I will take my leave, princess."

She finally spoke, voice distant, "Safe travels, Lord Strong."

The rejection stung and he left the room.

He didn't make himself look back, feeling as if he might do something foolish, so instead he squared his shoulders as he left the apartments.

Only to be accosted by Ikit at the stairs, the boy materializing from the shadows in the archway and nearly making him jump.

"My prince-"

Ikit cut him off with a sharp snap of, "Stupid fool. You should have let him strike me. Beat me in front of everyone and then the king would be sending him away, yes-yes. But you are stupid-dumb and now it is you who is sent away. Idiot."

"I don't understand-"

Ikit walked past himself without another glance, going down the hall that Harwin had just left and obviously not bothering with him anymore. No doubt going back to Rhaenyra and leaving a befuddled Harwin in his wake.

He didn't understand the boy but perhaps that ruthlessness was what was needed.

The queen, the Kingsguard, Ser Criston. Harwin worried, from King's Landing all to Harrenhall he worried like a dog gnawing at a bone.

It was something that still lingered in his mind when they finally reached Harrenhall and he met family he hadn't seen in years, embraced kin he barely remembered and saw once again the twisted ruin of Harrenhall.

Worries still dogged him, worries for a woman he loved but could never have. Worries for children he loved regardless of their lack of shared blood. He went to bed with such worries, not even caring for the potential of his upcoming marriage. He simply wished his father to return to King's Landing as swift as he would as no doubt the queen would seek to influence the king ever more in Lyonel's absence.

Then in the middle of the night Harwin woke up and smelled smoke.
