Chapter Text
Helaena #1
It took them four days before they went to visit Aemond and the Sorceress, and by that time Helaena was done with her embroidery.
It had come to her in a dream, this winged creature. It had fascinated her enough, the image of this green-eyed woman on the back of this winged-being, that she'd wanted to make art of the creature. For even if it was neither spider nor insect, it was still something to behold. Something magic lay about it, and while it was no dragon Helaena imagined it would be a pleasure to ride. They reminded her of the winged golden horses that were said to live in the land of Yi Ti, or sometimes said to be seen in the shadows of Asshai.
Then the green-eyed woman from her dreams had shown up, and Helaena had decided that it was to be for the woman. She had ridden the beast, so it made sense to give her the image of the beast.
"It is very beautiful." Mother told her as they gathered to leave, and Helaena gently put the embroidery in a bag for the servants to carry to the ship.
Helaena knew that her mother wanted her to make pretty things, even though she only pushed it with gentle encouragement, but she found that she just simply couldn't. Embroidery, when she liked the subject, was something she delighted in. She could spend hours and hours just working on her stitching and it felt like nothing, she had to be reminded to eat and to sleep and to rest her fingers and hands as she did not even feel the cramping until she was prompted. When she cared little for the subject, like flowers and birds, it was something she could not force herself to do.
This did not offend her. Mother did not seem to understand her fascination with her friends, but that was alright. She asked questions and made sure that Helaena could find her friends from all around the world, so it did not matter if Mother really understood. No one else seemed to understand, anyway. Mother also always complemented her work as well, and complimented her skill with a needle. She had even stopped trying to touch Helaena. She did not like that it hurt Mother to not be able to touch her, but Helaena found that when another touched her she felt too strongly. Like something was leaking out of that other person and into her, and she had no choice but to feel as they felt and to hear a thought as it strayed from their head and into hers.
It was too much. She loved Mother, but Mother was all worry and pain, a tight ball that only wound tighter and that made Helaena feel as if she were to burst. She could not handle that.
"There are many ways to fly in the sky." Helena told her mother, because the woman had flown on this beast, flew on a dragon, and she had seen flashes of others riding on brooms, or just in the air on nothing, but strangely sat as though on a horse.
Mother seemed to struggle with what to say for a moment, but Aegon didn't have that problem. "Like many ways to skin a cat, yeah?"
He laughed at his own joke even as neither Helaena, Daeron, or Mother laughed. Instead, Mother shot him a pointed look and told him to behave, and Daeron leaned over to Helanea to ask nervously about skinning cats.
"He doesn't mean it." Helana told him and he nodded, his hand still woven tightly in Mother's dress.
He had not cried the day he left with Grandfather, but Helanea had heard him cry the night before. She was glad he was back. She had a dream about him, once. Or she thought it was about him. Some of her dreams were clear, and some were just symbols that she could not place. This dream had been warm, hot, fire and a sense of longing. There had been a dragon out in a storm, struggling to fly, that did not look around nor return to where she'd been standing despite the fact that she had screamed for him to return. She had already lost so much then, there was a cracked and broken dragon eggshell at her feet and her other eggs had been taken.
She had cried when she had woken, because she did not want to see the dragon go, but she had not been able to explain to her Mother or the servants why the tears flowed.
Mother told Helaena of her own dreams, when Heleana could not be consoled. She dreamed often about flying high up in the air, through the eyes of a bird -- as if she was a bird. The ground was always so far away and she never wanted to land because the air was where she was meant to be, flying so high that no one could touch her.
"You see, dreams mean nothing -- they cannot hurt you. They are just things that we make up as we sleep." Mother had explained to her, softly.
Helaena had dreams of that, as well. Of a little green bird that flew, flew, flew out into an endless sky and never turned around or stopped until it was cruelly caught in a net and forced to land on a white tower, be a faceless man.
Daeron was back, now, though. Mother was happy, and Helanea was happy to see him again and to see Mother happy.
"I'm sure that Lady Hariel will be delighted with your gift." Mother told her, smiling, although she did not touch Helaena's shoulder.
"Yes, who wouldn't want some weird cloth?" Aegon said, dismissively, and Mother turned to give him another scolding about being on his best behavior for their trip.
Helaena did not mind. Aegon often said things he did not mean, but that were meant to be mean, when Mother's eyes were turned away from him. When it had been just them, earlier, he had told her that he wished he could see a creature such as the one she had created.
"Sometimes we wish for things we cannot have, and they never come to pass. Sometimes our wishes are so strong that we force them to be." She had told her brother, softly, and he had remained silent.
She flew on Dreamfyre, close by to Aegon, who flew Sunfyre. Her dragon remained a good distance away from her sister, Rhaenyra, who flew with Joffrey strapped to her chest, and her husband, Laenor.
She did not know how to feel about the two of them. It was nice to have a sister, or it would have been if Rhaenyra was sister to her. Aemond was sweet, as was Daeron, and when Aegon was not busy being bitter he could be nice too. Sometimes he had a joke that was funny, but then he made a comment about Father never being around that made Helaena sad. Then, of course, there were the unhatched dragon eggs that were in her vision, fuzzy and uncertain, but she did not know about them yet.
But she did not know Rhaenyra well, who often looked at her as if she was looking through Helaena. Many people did not know how to speak to her, or with her, but her sister did not even try.
Her children were nice, though. All were much younger than her, but Jacaerys was kindly, and Lucerys was bright and full of energy. Joffrey was too young to know, but he had such a cute face that Helaena did not mind smiling at it.
Daeron, Mother, and Father were on the ship alongside Helaena's nephews, Jacaerys and Lucerys. Too young to ride, or their dragons too young to ride, or they did not have a dragon yet -- either way, they had been forced to sail instead of fly, but not for too long, mayhaps.
They landed a few hours before the ship arrived, and their dragons were led to the volcanic underground while Aemond eagerly awaited them. He waited outside of the giant underground cave, where Princess Rhaenys stood by his side.
She embraced her son, deeply, while Aemond moved to greet them excitedly. By his side was a dog-sized dragon with silver scales that glittered and glistened brightly. When the dragon moved, Helena thought she saw a rainbow on its scales.
"Look! Look! I have a dragon!" Aemond was grinning from ear to ear, his eyes glancing down at the dragon excitedly. "Her name is Starlight."
"Congratulations, brother." Helaena told him. He was always lamenting about not having one even though she and Aegon had claimed their own. Even Daeron had a dragon, although Tessaron was small as he had only hatched when Daeron was two.
There will be three to hatch, and there will be two to claim, she thought, but she did not speak it.
This would be nice. Mayhaps it would make Mother less stressed, too. She had not been as desperate as Aemond, no, but Mother knew that she wanted them all to be the best. To be something no one could argue against. Greens and blacks, spinning, spinning, spinning to see who would sit on top, but do not mind the lost thread - for there would be too much to gather. It would float in the wind, lost to the outstretched hands that longed for it.
"So they do have four legs." Rhaenyra mused, and stared at the little dragon for a moment before she turned her gaze away to speak once again with her husband and Princess Rhaenys.
"Yes, all of the dragons laid by Artemis have four legs." Princess Rhaenys agreed. "How was your flight in? I expect my cousin is not too far away?"
Helaena tuned out the sound of the adults speaking. She wanted to go looking for the Dragonflies that called Driftmark home, or the Silver Spotted Spiders that wandered on the ground. Mayhaps even the little fire crabs that only lived in the thick, warm sand of the volcanic ashes. She hoped that they would stop speaking soon, so that it would not be rude to wander away.
"How are your lessons?" Helaena asked Aemond, as the adults continued to speak despite her sending thoughts to them to hurry.
"Ours are still boring as fuck." Aegon said, although he looked up to see if the adults would care, or if they were even listening.
They either did not care, or did not hear.
"How can they be boring when you do not go?" Helaena asked.
Aegon scowled at her a little, but said nothing in response.
"They are good! Dragonspeech is hard, but I am learning. I have learned a few potions as well, there is this one that lets you drift a few feet into the air as if you are flying, and it is fun. We do not have all of the ingredients from sister's home, though, so we cannot make everything. Still, it is so much fun."
"You leave for a few days and have a new sister already?" Aegon snorted. He then leered. "Or is it a sister-wife, for the little child who thinks himself a man?"
Aemond glared a little at Aegon, and he straightened his body out -- to look taller, Helaena knew, for he was shorter than even her. He did not take the taunt, though.
"Yes, my dragon, Starlight, calls Lady Hariel sister and because we are one I have decided that she is my sister, too." He said this as if it was a challenge.
"One and the same." Helaena agreed. "The fire sparks deep within you both. You shall burn brighter than ever."
Aemond beamed at her even as Aegon rolled his eyes.
"So then this woman really talks to the dragons? I had thought that a fantastical lie made up by the adults so that they could fight about something else." Aegon rolled his eyes. "As if they needed more to fight about, anyway. Whatever, it's just more we will need to learn if Mother has anything to say about it. As if High Valyrian isn't bad enough, what use is a dead language spoken only by the dead?"
Despite his statement, he looked back at where Sunfyre had been taken away, to take shelter in the volcanic underground.
"We speak it too, brother. We must keep our blood strong and our family stronger." Aemond said, firmly. If only mother would wed us. Helaena heard, somewhere deep in her head.
"She must not tell lies." Helaena told him, because it had been another thing that came to her in a dream, after the women had left.
There had been many dreams since then. A ground full of the skeletons of dead dragons, their bones burning, the ground soaked with blood. A single seed that withered and died. The sigil of House Targaryen slowly being split into little pieces, the pieces scattered so that only one tiny little corner remained, precariously over a fire. A stream filled with rubies. A tower, off in the distance, and a woman's screams that turned into the cries of a baby.
And then it had all melted and swirled and turned into a sky full of dragons, out in the air. Soaring high, some with four legs, some with two. They passed under and over one another, one taking the lead and then another taking the lead from that one, but never did they fight. They all flew towards the same location, out in the distance. The sun lingered high in the sky, the water glittered clear and bright below them and it reflected green, black, red, and gold.
These dreams could not live together. It was one, or it was another. But she did not know which would land on top.
She did not want to lose the thread. Spool of green, spool of black. She did not want to lose the thread.
She had more dreams about the Lady Hariel, as well. A dark forest, with spiders the size of horses (and she would have to ask Lady Hariel about this). Seven individuals with the same face, flying in a storm, stradling brooms like horses. A man with red eyes. A man with a skeleton face. Stairs that moved. Paintings that moved. Nothing made sense, as they all came in snippets, but they had the feel of the Lady Hariel to them.
"Everyone lies." Aegon dismissed. He looked more interested than he had before, though. "If this is true, say something, brother." Aegon commanded.
Aemond scowled at him, but he turned to the dragon at his side and said something in a hissy, thick language that made the hair on Helaena's arm stand on its end.
The dragon responded with the same hissy language.
"It's true, then." Aegon looked more awake, and he even grinned. "I guess this isn't a waste of time after all."

Alicent #2
-
Alicent was glad to get off the boat when they arrived. It was only a trip of a few hours, but she still did not like to be so out of control. Sure, she could direct the ship's Captain, she could give orders to the sailors -- but she could not control the sea, she could not control the weather. They would do what they willed, regardless of the consequences for others.
Daeron clung to her skirts as they exited, and Alicent enclosed her hand over his as he smiled brightly at her. Oh, how she missed him. Her sweet little Prince, always so eager to be close and to touch her. Alicent loved all of her children, but Daeron was the one she felt closest to, that she understood best.
Aegon was….bitter, to say the least, and although Alicent was frustrated by that she knew why. Viserys did not look at him so much as he looked past Aegon, for he was not Rhaenyra and did the King truly have five children or just one? Alicent did not like that she had to press upon him the importance of being King to save their lives, lest they be put to the sword when Rhaenyra would be crowned Queen, but she had to! Their lives were not to be played with, this was a matter of life or death!
When her own Father had pressed upon her the importance of Aegon being prepared to rule, and the consequences, she had shed tears, yes. But she had buckled up and done the right thing to ensure that they all lived! But Aegon did not care to do so, was bitter at being asked to do so.
(Alicent wanted to believe that her former friend wouldn't do that, but she'd also sworn on her mother's blood that she had not slept with Daemon and what had that been but a clever diversion? Rhaenyra could not be given the chance to put them to sword. Alicent would be the better of the two. After the succession was established, she would impress upon her children the importance of mercy to those they had bettered, and then they could work on reconciling -- but it would only work if Aegon worked!)
Helaena, her sweet Helaena, was obedient and quiet. She was also strange, spoke things that did not make sense, and did not like to be touched. Her interest in insects was queer, but Alicent would not allow her Father or husband to take that away from her (would only her husband look at Helaena long enough to see the queer hobbies!). It had hurt Alicent at first, when her sweet daughter had turned away from her touch -- even as a baby she had been temperamental at touch and would only let herself be held sometimes --- but she was still Alicent's daughter. Her blood, her love, her sweet daughter.
Aemond was bright, brilliant, energetic -- but also prone to outlandish things without thinking. Prone to strike out in anger and only then, afterwards, think of the consequences. It was frustrating, as he was smart. Alicent had high expectations for him, second son or not, but he needed to curb his impulses! He was all fire and no control, and Alicent prided herself on her control. He carried Viserys' strong desire to be loved by others, and it would be his downfall if he did not learn to control it, Alicent feared.
Daeron, though. Only four -- close to five -- but quiet, obedient, loved to be near Alicent and to hold her hand or her skirts. Father had not liked that he was so reliant on her, but Alicent loved it. She wished he would stay a baby longer that she could hold him forever. He was so much like her, too, Alicent could mistake him for herself as a child. Eager to listen, eager to follow the others, he had a kind heart (but a kind heart could be trampled, she despaired, a kind heart could trust too much and be lied to, she knew). He even shared her fascination with birds, and had taken the little yellow bird that the Sorceress had conjured as a pet. Had named it Tweet.
"Oh, but to be able to fly again." Viserys told her as they landed and he stretched out his arm above his head. "Balerion was so large he burst through the clouds before they could even touch me."
He spoke of flying to her infrequently. He had been uncertain on Balerion, he was so big, but he'd been able to taste the sky, fly through the clouds when he'd ridden his beast. Alicent knew that he mourned Balerion for what he was, the symbol of his old home land, and for the fact that he took the sky with him when he died.
Viserys had never taken another dragon, although Alicent knew it was not for a lack of wanting.
"Were the clouds fluffy?" Daeron asked, shyly behind her skirts. He peaked his wide purple eyes out from Alicent's side to gaze up at his father.
Viserys looked startled, then looked down to see Daeron and smiled blandly. He would not have forgotten Rhaenyra, if she had been there, Alicent knew. Oh, but she knew.
"I never felt them myself as Balerion was so big he always burst them wide open before I could do so, but they seemed more solid to me than fluffy. Although mayhaps a little soft as Balerion's scales would scarefly touch them and they would burst." Viserys told their son.
They were cold, and they felt like mist, Alicent wanted to say. When she dreamed of being a bird, flying high out in the air, she loved to fly through the clouds. They dissipated like smoke, and they felt like mist on her feathers. Cool and clean.
She did not say that, though, as it was only a silly dream and Viserys had touched the real thing. Or his dragon had, at least.
Daeron nodded and hid his head back in Alicent's skirts, and when she laid her hand against the soft down of his white hair he smiled at her. On his shoulder, the little bird Tweet sang high and clear, and did not move away from either Alicent's hand nor her son's hand.
Princess Rhaenys and Lord Corlys came down to greet them, although Alicent made note that Rhaenyra did not. Lady Hariel was just finishing up her Common lessons, and would be joining them very shortly.
"How have lessons being going, cousin?" Viserys asked as they settled into the sitting room. He leaned forward eagerly, his face bright and pain free.
"Dragonspeech is coming along, although I must confess it is a difficult language. I have learned that our people, Lady Hariel and ours, have learned it differently as the ability to speak and understand flows down in her blood and only the ability to learn it flows in ours. It would seem that the fact that we mingled blood with the dragons was not a myth, or a figure of speech, but a reality -- as far as Meleys knows." Princess Rhaenys said, and Viserys nodded along.
"It is fascinating how different magic can be, that we have learned in different ways!" Viserys said. "What else?"
"We have discovered something -- my husband is able to learn the art of potions, what we call Alchemy, as well. As are Vaemond and his children. We have been working on some of the basics, on learning how to cut the ingredients and prepare them and such. Lady Hariel only has a few books written in this Latin of hers that we can understand, and the rest are in her mother tongue -- Aenglish, so it is a bit difficult, although things will be easier once the scribes you have sent manage to compose a few copies."
Viserys had sent out only his most trusted scribes -- and only those that did not know High Valryian, that he did not want the secrets to get out -- as soon as their son's letter had been received. Seven scribes in total, like the seven points on her Star. A good, solid number.
Alicent did not know what to feel about Vaemond Velaryon and his sons being able to learn. This was already a dangerous skill -- or so it would seem, for if one could learn to heal could they not learn to harm -- so she said nothing on the subject. But this was Vaemond Velaryon, the Master of Complaints, who sought to see Rhaenyra's sons disinherited.
He should have been her ally, she knew. If Lucerys Velaryon was stripped of his title as future Lord of Driftmark, then the title could be pried ever more easily from Jacaerys and Rhaenyra and Aegon's path to the Iron Throne ever more clear.
Yet….yet Alicent was reluctant in finding an ally in the man who spoke so poisonously of Rhaenyra. She did not like it when Criston, her sworn sword, called Rhaenyra a Cunt and she did not like it when Veamond implied she was a whore, even if it was only in whispers that reached her as gossip.
He was lucky that Viserys had not heard these rumors, or her husband would demand recompensation for this slight. If Daemon heard these rumors….it would not be a sight one wished to see.
She would allow herself time to think it over. A complication she had not foreseen, but that she would adjust to.
"Yes, it hadn't been on purpose -- my nephew Daeron had decided to join in the lesson of my wife and Aemond, and we had discovered that he is able to brew the potions as well." Lord Corlys seemed pleased with this, and Alicent had to resist the urge to scoff. "The language is not entirely the same as our own, this Latin, but we can understand it enough. We will need to do something about the other books, though. Mayhaps we will have to learn this tongue of Lady Hariel, even."
She was surprised that, as arrogant as he was, that Lord Colrys had not tried to join the lesson himself and that it was his nephew who had done so. But if Alicent heard correctly, Daeron Velrayon carried his Uncle's arrogance in his pocket and brandished it as readily and eagerly as he did his sword, as eagerly as his father brandished his complaints.
"What sort of potions have you been making?" Rhaenyra asked.
That was what Alicent wanted to know. They had sent more of the Dittany Ointment two days in, that Viserys had been applying liberally, along with a handful of the headache potions. But what else?
"There was a potion of levitation that Aemond and Hariel made, that allows one to levitate a few inches off the ground for about an hour. We also made the Dittany Ointment, and Headache potion that was sent to you earlier. But we have mostly been focusing on getting our knife work and brewing skills established." Princess Rhaenys said.
"You need to be very precise with what you are doing with this potion work. One mistake can turn deadly, although we have been working on such easy projects we need not fear as much -- children as young as one and ten learn this and we are starting with what they learn." Lord Corlys added.
"Oh, levitation! Splendid! I would love to be able to fly again, even if it is only a few inches off of the ground." Viserys exclaimed.
"Is that not…dangerous? What if one floats too far away?" Alicent asked, although her heart soared at the idea of being able to fly as she did in her dreams.
Princess Rhaenys shook her head. "No, one cannot fly that far up with the potion. Aemond, Daemion, and Daeron tried to potion earlier, and they could not even touch the ceiling all the way. They were able to control themselves as well, going up and down, but they did not go up that far."
That was a relief. Then, mayhaps….no, she would not ask. Her dreams would have to suffice.
"Have you received any word from Daemon or Laena?" Viserys asked, and Alicent hoped that the answer was 'no'.
And it was. Of course that didn't truly mean anything, as Daemon came and went as he pleased with neither word nor permission. Still, Alicent hoped that Daemon would be skeptical enough to stay away.
"How is your health, cousin? You seem to be doing better." Princess Rhaenys asked.
"I cannot explain to you the amount of pain that has been erased from my person, cousin. I am a new man. This ointment has cured much, and now that I am healthier my Maester's cures are working."
The ointment worked wonders on the cuts and wounds her husband received on the Throne. The Maesters added little - maggots to consume dead flesh, and bleeding that Viserys now rejected. Her husband's health was returning, and Alicent was all the more glad for it. No more did she have to watch her husband wither and die a slow, painful death.
Lady Hariel's classes ended, then, and they were to join Alicent's children in the volcanic underground that they could see these new dragons, these strange dragons that Lady Hariel had brought with her and one that her son had claimed.
That, of course, is when the sky grew dark and cold as Vhager's massive shadow flew past them. Alicent stared up at the sky, her heart sinking, and spotted the red Caraxes not too far away.
Caraxes and Vhager. Prince Daemon and Lady Laena, returned to Driftmark.

EXTRA:
His heart hammered in his throat and his chest was fit to burst. Aemond stared at the small dragons, the four legged beasts, as they huddled amongst their mother's wing and his world turned sideways.
Something brushed against his mind, against his soul, against his heart -- a subtle, soft touch as hot as fire, as sweet as cake. He reached back out, eagerly, and felt that soft touch turn firm, felt it swallow him whole as he rushed forward and stumbled to his knees to look at the dragon that had likewise stepped forward to him.
Her silver scales rippled with such soft, delicate light that Aemond swore he saw a rainbow dance under them. The dragon peered up at him with eyes the color of blood, and when their eyes connected Aemond felt it -- the claim, the bond, the connection he had dreamed of.
Behind him Lady Hariel chuckled. "She is claiming you as her own, Prince Aemond."
Aemond stared at the dragon wide eyed and breathless. He wanted to know everything -- what exactly was she saying, word for word?
"That is what she said, then? Exactly what she said?" He demanded. He turned to Lady Hariel and caught her eye. "I want to know exactly what she said."
She looked bemused as she spoke. "She said, exactly, 'You smell so good, human. Sister, I will have this one as mine'."
He smelled good? It is true that Aemond bathed the night before, that he would be presentable this day, and that he had borrowed the scent that his Father favored -- a spicy sweet scent called Dragon's Blood. Was that it?
She had chosen him. It was not just Aemond who had chosen her, but she had chosen him as well. They had chosen each other, at the same moment.
"Her name is Starlight." Lady Hariel supplied as he turned back to look at his dragon. Starlight. It fit, for she was as beautiful -- no, more so -- than the twinkling stars.
"Starlight." Aemond breathed. She was Lady Hariel's sister then, was she?
Did that not make them sister and brother as well, Aemond and Hariel? For this dragon, Starlight, was of his soul. He could feel it in the way that her mind brushed and mingled with his, in the way that he could feel her whole presence with everything in him.
He stood, swiftly, and turned to engulf Lady Hariel -- his sweet sister -- in the tightest hug that he could muster. She seemed startled at first, and then her hand came down to press against his back and she hugged him back.
"I will repay you, I promise. I will repay you for all that you have given me." He swore, and he meant it. "Sweet sister, I swear this to you."
Notes:
I wanted to get the Hariel & Daemon/Laena interaction in here but didn't manage to get it in but! They are here and the next chapter, that I am already working on, will have it :) I told someone I would have the Starlight/Aemond bond scene written, and I added it in at the end because it didn't quite fit at first. I tried to write everything in Aemond's voice for the first half, but Helaena wanted to have her chance to shine :)
