Yeda set her grip against the trunk and worked the branches one line at a time. Each fed a different ward. Opening one left the other eight shut behind it.
"I am not cutting the seam, I open one branch and pinch it back before it drains," Yeda said, her hand steady on the trunk. "Give me your smallest column, first ward takes its own share and nothing else."
Vasa ran her columns and marked the lightest one, the ward whose patients could survive the fastest return. She fed the name up the line and set her ledger to watch the figure fall.
"West recovery, forty-one names, the shallowest wounds on the floor," Vasa said, turning the column toward the trunk. "Open that branch and forty-one readings leave his channel, I call the seam shut the instant the column reads empty."
Yeda opened the branch a finger's width and the load began to slide down the trunk toward the depot.
