Yeda spent the morning in the workshop, and what she carried out was not a pipe. A steel ruler had gone across the grinder until its long edge held light, wrapped at one end in tape and cord.
"It cuts," she said, which was her entire sales pitch, and the truest one he had heard since the Merge.
"Known risks," Nox said, when the party stood at the well's edge with the plan laid flat, "the Broodmother is E-plus, plated forward, and she charges in straight lanes. A train with a grudge."
"Her breathing runs through vents on her flanks," he said, "and her heel cords bare when she rears. Those are the two doors in her."
"The plan has four jobs," he said, "and every one of them has a name on it."
Kendra took the bridge over the well's second level, its supports loosened by her stone shoulders all morning. Vasa held the mezzanine rail with three days of hoarded cold in her hands. Yeda waited at the choke below with the ruler catching what light there was.
Nox walked the whole arena twice before anyone took a final post. Every lane got a fallback point marked in chalk at knee height. Nobody would need to invent a decision when the plate came calling.
The bait went out last, a basket of Emilia's cuttings set in the charge lane's mouth. Rent, paid in advance, from a tenant whose green the landlady already hated.
The Broodmother came up out of the third floor dark like the drag marks promised. She filled the corridor the way a train fills a tunnel, plate from snout to shoulder, six Warders flanking her in escort file.
[ Broodmother: Rank E+. Weak seams: flank vents, heel cords. Function: territory heart's warden. ]
Her head found the basket of green, and the sound she made bent the air. Whatever the mark meant to her, the rival brood's scent in her own charge lane meant more, and she committed the way trains commit.
The lane swallowed her acceleration in three strides, plate low, tonnage gathering. Every chalk mark in the arena waited exactly where the plan had put it.
"Lane," Nox said, and Kendra dropped the bridge.
Stone shoulders hit the loosened supports at a full plant, and the span folded under the charging tonnage mid-stride. The Broodmother went through the bridge deck into the well's bottom level, and the building shook with the arithmetic.
The Warders came off escort file at the party like thrown knives. He met the first two at the choke with Yeda, and the ruler's first working day opened a joint gap the pipe had never managed cleanly.
Its ground edge went through the joint gap without arguing about anything. She looked at the cut for half a breath, recalibrating what her hands were now worth, then went back to work.
Frost took the third's feet, stone took the fourth's charge, and the knife did its old counting. The last pair broke back down the stairwell toward their mother, which was loyal, and doomed them slower.
Below, the Broodmother rose out of the bridge wreck and found the stairs with a patience worse than rage. Her vents ran wide open from the climb, flank plates lifted, the breathing seam bare as an invoice.
"Vasa," he said, and the mezzanine's cold went down the well in one spent line.
Three days of hoarded frost sealed across the open vents while she drew breath. The Broodmother's next inhale met ice, and the exhale after it came out ragged, shortened, taxed.
She reared to break the frost sheet on the rail edge, and the rearing bared her heels. Yeda went in under the plated bulk without hesitating, because dangerous work was hers by contract, and the ruler cut the left cord where it stood proud.
The leg buckled, and the whole plated tonnage sagged toward its wound. Nox was on the flank before the sag finished, both hands driving the knife into the frosted vent seam, and the seam took the blade the way ledgers took final entries.
She fought the arithmetic longer than anything else he had ever killed. Twice she rose, dragging the buckled leg, snapping at shapes her shortened breath could no longer chase.
The party gave her nothing worth spending any of that fury on. Frost renewed where plates lifted, stone met every lunge at its weakest angle, and the ruler visited the second heel while the first was being mourned.
His knife found the vent seam a final time, deeper, and held there. The Broodmother's breathing ran down like the wing's tides at midnight, slower, slower, stopped.
[ Enemy defeated: Broodmother, 6 Brood Warders. ]
[ EXP +3,000. (10,500 total.) ]
[ Level 13 reached. Level 14 reached. Level 15 reached. ]
[ 15 assignable points available. ]
He stood on the plated shoulder while the levels moved through him like weather fronts. Four went to Strength, two to Agility, two to Stamina, three to Endurance, four to Perception, and the well's dark came up another grade of legible.
The body underneath the numbers still carried its full ledger of the fight. His shoulder had reopened against the vent plates, both forearms shook, and the Stamina column had earned its points twice over on the climb alone.
The claim came next, and he made it with the whole party standing in the record. Contribution had names, and he read them into the wing's deed the way contracts deserved.
[ Territory heart unsealed. ]
[ New East Wing claimed. Claimant: Nox. ]
[ Claim contribution recorded. Kendra: charge lane collapse. Vasa: seam suppression. Yeda: tendon severance. ]
[ First wing-conquest reward: Regeneration I. ]
[ Marked signature released. The mark on plant mana has died with its maker. ]
Two floors down, in a water room she had walled in green, a gardener was reading the same line. Whatever leash the wing had tied to Emilia was cut, and she owed the cutting to a basket of her own cuttings.
The skill settled in like a slow tide, and he watched a shallow claw line on his forearm begin its patient closing. Minor wounds, closing slowly, at a cost the System billed against hunger and rest.
"It won't replace blood," Vasa said, reading the skill line over his shoulder, "or stamina. It closes doors, it doesn't refill rooms."
"It ends the bandage economy for scrapes," he said, "which frees the bandages for wounds that matter. That's worth a wing's tax alone."
Kendra flexed her bruised forearms and looked at the skill line with open commerce in her eyes. Rewards that arrived through deeds rather than sponsors were the only kind she trusted, and the wing had just paid one.
The claim did not stay a private fact for longer than a breath. Every surviving screen in the school carried one line of it, and he could feel the building full of people recalculating him again.
[ Territory update: the New East Wing has a claimant. All factions notified. ]
The heart's floor stood open above them, and the wing had changed key the moment the claim registered. Doors that had been sealed clicked through the building in a falling pattern, water pipes hummed a tone lower, and the map's grey went the quiet green of owned ground.
First among the unsealings, the workshop opened to Yeda's hand, as promised. The water room's pipes gave their pressure up to the trough, and two more sealed stores yielded shelf stock from a reality that had labeled everything in sliding script.
Behind the vent seam her core came free, the size of a fist and dense as argument. It sat warm in his palm, and a screen unfolded over it that he had never seen before.
[ Commander core secured: Broodmother. ]
[ Absorption available: sealed. ]
[ Requirement not met: Core Integration. This authority is not yet held. ]
He read the lines three times, and the word absorption stayed exactly where it was. The System had just admitted that cores were not only currency, and that somewhere ahead of him sat the authority to spend them into himself.
"State the known risks," Vasa said, watching his stopped face again, because his stopped face had become a category of weather the party planned around.
"The cores we've been hoarding are a menu," he said, turning the fist of dense dark over, "and the System is telling me I don't own a mouth yet. That's tomorrow's problem."
Today's problem was gentler, and it was called pricing. By evening the wing's border corridor carried a posted sign in Kendra's square handwriting, terms he had dictated between inventory counts.
{New East Wing. Safe passage: one core or equivalent stock per crossing. Hunting rights: by contract only. Trespass: billed at the Broodmother's rate.}
The first customers arrived before dark, two of Ava's crew paying a low core to cross toward the fortress with trade goods. Commerce had begun moving through his territory and leaving its percentage behind at the door.
An hour behind them came a fortress runner with a written request for extended corridor access, payment terms attached. Owen had bought early this time, which meant the man was capable of learning.
"The tax works," Kendra said, watching the traffic from the mezzanine rail.
"The tax is the territory," he said, feeling his wing breathe its owned tides around them, "and everything else was just the down payment."
