Chapter 17 - Erik is travelling

Erik rode towards the border, the dust kicking up beneath his horse's hooves. He was relieved to be leaving the castle, escaping the constant teasing and banter with Sophia. She was his wife, for goodness' sake! He shouldn't be feeling this way about her.

Meanwhile, back in the castle, Sophia sat in her chamber, reading a letter from her sister, Princess Aria. The letter was filled with longing and nostalgia, Aria missing Sophia dearly.

"Sophia, dear sister,

I miss you so much! The castle feels empty without you. I hope you're doing well in Valtor. Write back soon, I need to hear about your adventures.

With love,

Aria"

Sophia smiled, feeling a pang of homesickness. She took out a piece of parchment and began to write a reply.

"Aria, dear sister,

I'm doing well here in Valtor. The journey was... eventful. I've had many adventures already. The food is amazing, and I've met some interesting people.

You wouldn't believe it, but vampires aren't much different from humans. They have markets, dine together in the dining hall, and even have balls like we do! It's almost like they're... normal.

I met Lady Diana, Erik's ex-fiancée. She's... complicated. Erik had to leave for the border, so I'm a bit relieved he's gone. I'll be staying here for a while longer.

Take care, and write back soon.

With love,

Sophia"

Sophia finished writing and handed the letter to her handmaid. "Please send this to Princess Aria," she said.

The handmaid nodded and took the letter, leaving Sophia to her thoughts.

Sophia lay in bed, her eyes fixed on the ceiling as she tried to chase away the thoughts of Erik. She turned onto her side, punching her pillow into shape, and told herself to sleep. The castle was quiet, the only sound the occasional creak of the old wooden beams.

As she drifted off, Sophia's mind began to wander again, this time to the training sessions with Erik. She remembered the way he had corrected her stance, the way he had smiled when she did something right. Sophia's heart skipped a beat as she recalled the way Erik's eyes had crinkled at the corners when he smiled.

"No, no, no," Sophia whispered, shaking her head. "Stop thinking about him." She turned onto her other side, trying to get comfortable, but her mind refused to cooperate.

Just as Sophia was starting to drift off, a faint noise caught her attention. She sat up in bed, listening intently. It sounded like... footsteps. Sophia's heart began to beat faster as she wondered who could be walking around the castle at this hour.

The footsteps stopped outside her door, and Sophia held her breath. She heard a faint knock, and then a soft voice called out, "Sophia? Are you awake?"

Sophia's eyes narrowed. Who could be calling her at this hour? She threw off the covers and got out of bed, padding softly to the door. She opened it a crack, and a sliver of light from the hallway fell across her face.

"Yes?" Sophia whispered, her eyes adjusting to the light.

It was one of the castle servants, a young girl with a worried expression. "Lady Sophia, I'm so sorry to disturb you, but there's... there's someone here to see you."

Sophia's eyebrows rose. "Who is it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The servant hesitated, glancing nervously down the hallway. "It's... it's Lady Diana, my lady. She says it's urgent."

Sophia's heart sank. What could Lady Diana want with her at this hour? She hesitated for a moment, wondering if she should ignore the woman, but her curiosity got the better of her.

"Tell her I'll be right there," Sophia said, closing the door and reaching for her robe.

Sophia put on her robe and quickly got dressed, her mind racing with thoughts of what Lady Diana could want. She made her way to the sitting room, where Lady Diana was waiting.

As Sophia entered the room, Lady Diana turned to face her, a sly smile spreading across her face. "Sophia, dear," she said, her voice dripping with sweetness. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything."

Sophia raised an eyebrow, her instincts on high alert. "What do you want, Lady Diana?" she asked, her tone cool.

Lady Diana's smile faltered for a moment, but she quickly recovered. "I just wanted to... chat," she said, her eyes gl sparkling with mischief. "About Erik, of course."

Sophia's heart skipped a beat, but she kept her expression neutral. "What about him?" she asked, her voice steady.

Lady Diana laughed, a low, throaty sound. "Oh, Sophia, don't play coy with me. You know exactly what I'm talking about. You're his wife now, but we both know that's just a formality. He'll never truly be yours."

Sophia felt a surge of anger, but she kept her cool. "I don't know what you're talking about," she said, her voice icy.

Lady Diana's smile grew wider. "Don't you? Well, let me enlighten you, dear. Erik and I have a history, a history that can't be erased by a simple marriage. He'll always love me, no matter what."

Sophia felt a pang of doubt, but she pushed it aside. She wouldn't let Lady Diana get the better of her. "I'm not afraid of you," Sophia said, her voice firm. "You may have been engaged to Erik once, but you're not his wife. I am."

Lady Diana's face darkened, her eyes flashing with anger. "We'll see about that," she hissed, before turning and sweeping out of the room.

Sophia watched her go, her heart pounding in her chest. What had just happened?.

Sophia stood frozen for a moment, her mind racing with thoughts of what Lady Diana had just said. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. What was Lady Diana playing at? Did she really think she could get Erik back?

Sophia shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. She wouldn't let Lady Diana get under her skin. She was Erik's wife, and she would make sure he knew it.

With newfound determination, Sophia walked back to her bedroom, her eyes scanning the room for any signs of disturbance. Everything seemed normal, but Sophia couldn't shake the feeling that Lady Diana was up to something.

As she got back into bed, Sophia's mind kept wandering back to Erik. She wondered what he was doing at the border, if he was safe. She pushed the thoughts aside, telling herself she didn't care. But the feeling lingered, and Sophia knew she wasn't as unaffected by Erik as she thought.

Just as Sophia was starting to drift off, she heard a faint noise outside her window. She sat up, listening intently. It sounded like... whispering. Sophia's heart began to beat faster as she wondered who could be outside her window at this hour.

She threw off the covers and got out of bed, padding softly to the window. She pulled back the curtains, and her eyes met the gaze of a hooded figure standing in the shadows.

Sophia's breath caught in her throat as the figure raised a hand, beckoning her to come closer. Who was it? And what did they want?

The figure leaned forward, and Sophia saw a flash of silver in the moonlight. A note was being pushed through a small opening in the window.

Sophia's heart racing, she took the note and unfolded it. The message was brief, but it sent a shiver down her spine:

"Meet me in the garden at midnight. I have information about Erik."

Who was the mysterious messenger, and what did they know about Erik?
