Back in Azura, Princess Aria lay in bed, her handmaid, Margaret, squatting beside her bed. The dim light of the morning sun peeked through the curtains, casting a faint glow on Aria's worried expression. "My lady, try to have some food. Even Princess Sophia will not want to see you in this situation. Even if you want to get in touch with her, you need to have some strength left in you." Margaret paused, her eyes filled with concern, then continued, "I'm sure she has been busy settling down and has not gotten the chance to write to you. Valtor is far, and the roads can be rough, especially at night."
Aria sighed, her eyes welling up with worry. "Margaret, it's easy to say. It has been three days since they departed from here. I'm really worried about her. I hope that jerk didn't do anything to my Sophie. Valtor is a vampire kingdom, after all."
"My lady, he dare not do anything to our princess," Margaret comforted, her voice soft and reassuring. "It is written in the agreement that they cannot force the princess to do anything out of her will. And also, the hour to Valtor is so long that it might take days, maybe they might have been delayed. Besides, King Kael is a fair ruler, and Prince Erik is said to be honorable."
Aria's expression softened slightly. "Just eat something, your complexion is not good. After eating, you can write to her. Perhaps she'll reply."
Aria gave Margaret a weak smile. "Okay, Margaret, I'll comply. But you have to make a promise to me that you will let me write to her."
"I promise, my lady," Margaret said with a gentle smile. "That's my princess!" she added cheerfully, helping Aria out of bed.
Meanwhile, in Valtor, Sophia woke up to the warm rays of sunlight filtering through the curtains, a rare sight in a vampire kingdom like Valtor. She groggily turned to her other side, feeling uncomfortable, and finally got up. Rubbing her face with her palms, she tried to shake off the sleep. As she opened her eyes, she saw Kate, the maid, tidying up the room.
"Good morning, Your Highness," Kate said with a curtsy, her voice low and melodious.
Sophia smiled. "Good morning, Kate. You're up early. Why didn't you wake me when you arrived?"
"I didn't want to disturb your sleep, Princess," Kate replied. "You had a long journey getting here. Besides, the sun is barely up. Valtor's vampires are not fond of daylight, as you might have guessed."
Sophia nodded, taking in her surroundings. She was a princess from Azura, married to Prince Erik of Valtor as part of a peace treaty between their kingdoms.
"Kate, I've been meaning to ask you," Sophia said, as Kate helped her into the bath. "Would you be willing to be my handmaid here in Valtor?"
Kate's eyes widened in surprise, then a smile spread across her face. "I'd be honored, Princess."
Sophia smiled back, feeling a sense of relief. "Good. I want you to tell me everything about the royal family, especially Prince Erik's siblings."
Kate nodded, settling in to tell Sophia all about the siblings. "Prince Adrian is the eldest, he's quiet and reserved. Prince Erik is the second, you've met him. Princess Helena is the third, she's cold and distant. Princess Liana is the youngest, she's sweet and friendly. And Prince Lucas is...well, he's a bit of a troublemaker."
Sophia listened intently, taking in all the information. As she finished her bath, Kate helped her into a light blue lace dress, her golden hair cascading down her waist in waves. Sophia smelled like jasmine, fresh and floral, a scent that seemed almost...human.
Kate led Sophia to the dining area, where she met Prince Erik's siblings for the first time. The youngest sister, Princess Liana, around 13, greeted Sophia warmly. "Good morning, Sophia. It's nice to finally meet you. I've heard so much about you." Liana's eyes sparkled with curiosity, her smile genuine.
Sophia smiled, liking Liana instantly. "It's nice to meet you too, Liana. Thank you for the warm welcome."
The other sister, Princess Helena, gave Sophia a cool glance. "Good morning," she said curtly, clearly prefering Lady Diana, Erik's former partner. Helena's eyes narrowed slightly, her expression disapproving.
Erik's brothers, Prince Adrian and Prince Lucas, barely acknowledged Sophia's presence, looking uncomfortable with their brother's marriage. Prince Adrian, the eldest, seemed lost in thought, his eyes fixed on some point beyond Sophia. Prince Lucas, on the other hand, glanced at her with a mix of curiosity and hostility.
Erik's mother, seated at the head of the table, watched Sophia with disapproval. Her eyes were a deep, dark red, almost black, a trait common among the older vampires. King Kael smiled kindly at Sophia, trying to ease the tension.
"Good morning, Sophia," Prince Erik said, standing as she entered. "Welcome to Valtor."
Sophia's heart skipped another beat as she met his gaze. His eyes were a deep, dark red, almost black, like the night sky without stars. They seemed to bore into her soul, making her feel small and vulnerable.
The breakfast was a tense affair, with small talk about the weather and the upcoming ball. Sophia found herself grateful for Liana's friendly chatter, which broke the awkwardness.
As they finished breakfast, Prince Erik spoke up. "Sophia, I hope you'll join me for a walk in the gardens later. We have much to discuss."
Sophia felt a flutter in her chest but nodded politely. "I'd like that, thank you."
With breakfast over, Liana eagerly took Sophia's hand. "Let's go, Sophia! We have so much to do! I want to show you the gardens and maybe we can pick dresses for tonight's ball."
Sophia smiled, feeling a sense of relief at escaping the tense atmosphere. As they left the dining hall, Sophia caught Prince Erik's gaze, and for a moment, she felt like he was sizing her up.
The day passed in a whirlwind of dress fittings and preparations for the ball. Sophia found herself enjoying Liana's company, the young princess proving to be a delightful companion.
As the sun began to set, Sophia returned to her chambers to prepare for the ball. Kate helped her into a stunning silver gown, her hair styled in intricate braids. Sophia felt like a true princess, but a sense of nervousness lingered in the back of her mind.
What would tonight bring? The shadows seemed to grow longer, the air thickening with anticipation. Valtor's vampires were known for their elegance and cruelty, and Sophia was about to step into their world.
As Sophia prepared for the ball, Kate chatted excitedly about the evening's events. "The guests are starting to arrive, Princess. The king and queen are already in the grand hall, receiving them."
Sophia nodded, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement. She had never attended a ball in Valtor before, and she wasn't sure what to expect.
Kate handed her a small, intricately carved box. "This was given to you by Prince Erik, Princess. He said it's a gift for tonight."
Sophia opened the box, revealing a delicate silver necklace with a small, shimmering crystal pendant. The crystal sparkled in the light, sending shivers down her spine.
"He wants you to wear it tonight," Kate said softly.
Sophia's eyes met Kate's, a silent understanding passing between them. This was it. Tonight was the night she would officially become a part of the Valtorian royal family.
With Kate's help, Sophia put on the necklace and adjusted her dress. She took a deep breath, feeling a sense of determination wash over her. She was a princess, and it was time she acted like one.
As they entered the grand hall, Sophia was greeted by the sound of music and laughter. The room was filled with vampires, all dressed in their finest attire, and a few humans who served as guests or servants.
Prince Erik stood by the throne, his eyes fixed on Sophia as she descended the stairs. He looked dashing in his formal attire, his dark red eyes gleaming with approval as he took in her appearance.
Sophia felt a flutter in her chest as he approached her, a small smile playing on his lips. "You look stunning, Sophia," he said, offering her his arm.
Sophia smiled, feeling a sense of gratitude towards him. "Thank you, Erik. You don't look so bad yourself."
Erik chuckled, leading her to the throne where King Kael and Queen Victoria sat. "Welcome, Sophia," King Kael said, his voice warm and welcoming. "You look lovely tonight."
Sophia curtsied, feeling a sense of relief at the king's kind words. "Thank you, Your Majesty."
The ball continued, with Sophia dancing with various vampires and humans. She found herself enjoying the music and the company, despite the initial nerves.
As the night wore on, Prince Erik led her to the gardens, the cool night air a welcome respite from the crowded hall.
"Sophia, I wanted to talk to you about something," Erik said, his voice serious.
Sophia looked up at him, her heart racing. "What is it?"
Erik's eyes seemed to bore into her soul, his expression intense. "I want to make sure you're happy here, Sophia. Valtor can be a difficult place, but I promise to do everything in my power to make you feel at home."
Sophia felt a surge of emotion, her heart swelling with gratitude towards him. "Thank you, Erik. I'm happy to be here."
Erik's expression softened, his eyes gleaming with a hint of warmth. "I'm glad to hear that, Sophia."
As they stood there, the music from the hall drifting into the gardens, Sophia felt a sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, she could make a life here in Valtor.
The night continued, with Sophia feeling more and more at ease. She danced with Prince Erik, laughed with Princess Liana, and even managed to charm the disapproving Queen Victoria.
As the evening drew to a close, Sophia felt a sense of exhaustion wash over her. It had been a long day, and she was ready to retire to her chambers.
Erik walked her back to her room, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "You did great tonight, Sophia. I'm proud of you."
Sophia smiled, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. "Thanks, Erik. I had a great time."
As they reached her door, Erik leaned in, his voice low. "I'll see you tomorrow, Sophia."
Sophia nodded, feeling a flutter in her chest as he turned and walked away.
Kate was waiting for her inside, a smile on her face. "You did great, Princess. You're going to do just fine here."
Sophia smiled, feeling a sense of hope and belonging. Maybe, just maybe, she could make a life here in Valtor.
Back in Azura, Princess Aria sat at her desk, quill in hand, trying to compose a letter to Sophia. She had promised Margaret she would write, and she was determined to send a letter to her sister as soon as possible. The dim light of the evening sun cast a warm glow over the room, and Aria's eyes wandered to the window, lost in thought. She missed Sophia terribly and hoped that her sister was doing well in Valtor.
As she began to write, her thoughts flowed onto the page. "Dearest Sophia, I hope this letter finds you well. I've been thinking about you nonstop since you left. I wish I could be there with you, but I'm glad you're getting to experience life in Valtor. Please be careful, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything. I love you, sis."
Aria sealed the letter and handed it to Margaret, who was waiting by the door. "Please make sure this gets to Sophia as soon as possible," Aria instructed, her voice filled with concern.
Margaret nodded and took the letter, curtsying before leaving the room. Aria watched her go, feeling a sense of relief wash over her. She knew that Sophia was in good hands, but she couldn't help worrying about her sister.
