Chapter 46 - The Forest of Death

Whilst waiting inside training ground 44, the sixty remaining participants studied each other, unlike the first exam no one tried to mingle with other teams, this was because in the Chūnin Exams done by Konoha— The Forest of Death is very well known as the benchmark for separating the mediocre and the qualified participants.

Shinra swept his gaze across the clearing, mentally cataloging the surviving teams.

'The team that looks the most composed is Team Five', Shinra thought, narrowing his eyes. 'Two Uchiha and an Aburame. I don't know what kind of sick joke put that lineup together, but they might be a problem.'

His eyes shifted to the opposite side of the clearing.

'And the Sunagakure team. Despite being the only squad sent by the Sand, they made it through and all appear to be cocky. I can't read their combat styles yet, but it's safe to assume Wind Release, puppet arts, and lethal poisons are standard for their shinobi.'

'Aside from those two, I don't see anyone else standing out as an immediate threat, but I can't let my guard down.'

Ever since his harrowing encounter and narrow escape from Sasori, Shinra had slipped into a habit of ruthless overanalysis. He refused to ever be pushed to his wits' end in a life-or-Death scenario again.

As the genin continued sizing each other up, the heavy crunch of boots echoed from the shadowed tree line of the forest.

A tall man wearing a heavy trench coat and dark sunglasses strolled out from the gate of the training ground. He swept a sharp gaze across the gathered genins.

"I am Kirigawa Mura," the proctor announced, his voice carrying an effortless weight. "And I will be overseeing the second phase of the Chūnin Exam."

He paused, letting the silence settle before continuing.

"As many of you already know, this exam carries a very real risk of death. Therefore, before I explain the rules of this phase, every single one of you must sign these consent forms."

A genin from Tanigakure, visibly unnerved and unfamiliar with Konoha's Chūnin exams, raised a hand. "What exactly are we consenting to by signing these?"

Mura looked down at the boy, his expression completely blank.

"By signing this form, you acknowledge that you are entering this phase entirely of your own free will, fully aware that you may lose your life. If you die in this forest, Konoha will not be held accountable."

The genin swallowed hard, pressing further. "Does that apply to Konoha's own genin? If one of them dies here, will their killers walk away without consequence?"

Mura nodded slowly. "That's right. Death is a daily reality in the shinobi world, and this exam is no exception. Even if you kill a Konoha shinobi, you will not face prosecution."

The proctor's eyes swept over the crowd once more. "This is your final chance to turn back. By signing, you volunteer to lay your life on the line. If you die here, nobody will seek justice for you."

With a flick of his wrist, Mura tossed a stack of sixty papers into the air, letting them scatter into the hands of the waiting teams at the front.

Mura observed the participants keenly, 'There are many more Konoha teams this time than the previous exams, the more of our teams that makes it to the 3rd phase the better it will be for Konoha.'

Moments later, all sixty forms were signed and handed back. Not a single genin backed down. Whether fueled by village rivalry, wartime grudges, or sheer ambition, every single participant was ready to kill or be killed.

Mura collected the last of the papers, stepped up to the front gate, and raised two fingers.

"Listen closely," Mura commanded. "For this phase, every team will be given a single scroll. Ten teams will receive a Heaven Scroll, while the remaining ten will receive an Earth Scroll.

To qualify for the next phase, you will have to reach the tower at the center of the forest with both Heaven and Earth scrolls. The tower is located ten kilometers away from every gate, as soon as you reach the tower you will be unable to exit or fight until the end of this exam.

You have five days to collect the scrolls and reach the tower with your entire team.

If one of your teammates dies or fails to reach the tower with you, your team will be disqualified. If you exit the perimeters of the training ground you will be disqualified. If you look at the contents of the scrolls you will be disqualified. In the forest, there are many plants and animals available to eat."

Mura scanned the crowd. "Are there any questions?"

A Sunagakure genin stepped forward, a dangerous glint in his eye. "If a single team manages to hunt down and collect every single scroll in the forest, what happens?"

Mura let out a dry, chilling smirk. "On the off-chance that such an absurd feat is accomplished, only that team will advance to the finals. Next."

A Konoha genin raised his hand next. "You mentioned that opening the scrolls results in disqualification. Can a scroll still be traded at the tower or taken from another team if they've already opened theirs?"

Mura shook his head. "The moment the seal is broken, the scroll becomes entirely worthless for entry. Furthermore, anyone foolish enough to glance inside will be disqualified on the spot." A subtle, cruel smile touched his lips. "As for how the examiners will know... you'll find out soon enough if you try it."

"Any other questions?"

This time no one stepped forward to ask a question.

"Very well," Mura said, turning sharply toward the massive iron gates. "Behind this fence is the distribution center. After every team receives a scroll, an examiner will escort you to your assigned gate."

Deep in thought, Shinra stood motionless. 'Should we rush the tower immediately after securing both scrolls and conserve our strength, or should we hunt down more scrolls? If we can wipe out the major threats in this forest now, it saves us the trouble of fighting them in a one-on-one bracket during the third exam.'

Within minutes, the distribution concluded. Shinra glanced down at the Earth Scroll in his palm, quickly concealing it inside his jacket before returning to his teammates.

Shinra flashed a sharp hand signal. Hyori and Inumaki acknowledged it instantly.

Hyori stepped behind Inumaki, closing her eyes and activating her Byakugan. Veins bulged around her temples as her field of vision expanded across the gathering point. She began whispering the identities of the teams holding Heaven scrolls directly to Inumaki.

Equipped with the intel, Inumaki scooped up Yoshimaru and strolled casually near the flagged teams until the pup locked onto their distinct scents.

Inumaki and Yoshimaru drifted back to Shinra and Hyori, giving them a sharp, silent nod.

A group of twenty Chūnins simultaneously arrived at the training ground and each lead a team to their gates, Team Eight followed behind one of the Chūnin to the gate they were assigned.

Shinra glanced at the gate number which was 27 and frowned. 'The proctor said the tower is ten kilometers from every gate. Assuming there are at least thirty gates, then this forest is roughly circular. That gives it a circumference of about sixty-three kilometers… meaning each gate is just over two kilometers apart along the edge. Bigger than I expected.'

"Are we still sticking to the plan?" Hyori asked quietly as they waited for the gates to open.

Shinra nodded firmly, "We bolt straight for the center and have Yoshimaru track the scents of the teams who carry the Heaven scroll, if we manage to secure a scroll early then we will enter the tower and conserve our chakra for the next exam."

As soon as the gate opened every team rushed through with many having the same plan in mind: rush to the center and ambush the enemy teams.

Yet, as the teams scattered into the dark wilderness, an invisible phenomenon rippled through the trees, one that only trained sensory-nin could pick up on.

One of those sensors was Aburame Muta of Konoha's Team Five, moving alongside Uchiha Ren and Uchiha Mira.

Muta froze mid-stride, dropping into a crouch. He frowned deeply, lifting his hand as a dense cloud of microscopic bugs swarmed around his palm.

"What is it?" Ren asked instantly, his hand dropping to his weapon pouch.

"We are being tracked by an enemy team." Muta replied as a cluster of insects flew from beneath his clothes into the open and began circling the surrounding, next a smaller group of bugs dug beneath the ground and began moving searching for chakra signatures.

"My Kikaichu are jamming the signal to confuse their sensor, while a secondary swarm tracks the origin of their probe," Muta explained, his voice entirely steady as Ren and Mira shifted into fighting stances.

A minute later, the subterranean bugs surged back to the surface, crawling frantically back onto Muta's skin. He brought them close to him, to process their feedback.

"Incredible," Muta murmured, his eyes widening slightly. "Whoever is tracking us is using a remarkably basic sensory technique... yet their range is absurd. My bugs pushed out two full kilometers and still couldn't reach the edge of their chakra field."

Mira glanced down at the bugs crawling over her teammate's hand. "Can't you push further?"

Muta shook his head. "The Kikaichu feed on my chakra. They can't maintain a connection at this distance for long. For now, we keep moving and keep our jamming active. If their sensor gets any closer, I will be able to sense him back."

Eight kilometers away.

Shinra stopped abruptly atop a thick oak branch. He turned to his squadmates.

"I've got four teams chakra signatures," Shinra said quietly. "Let's close the distance. Yoshimaru, find us a Heaven Scroll."
