Chapter 51 - Chapter 51 : Between Protection and Possession

The news spread quietly through the classroom that morning.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just whispers between desks.

"Vienna is back."

Claire's hand froze slightly above her notebook.

Vienna.

Gone for months to stay with her parents' family in her hometown.

No calls except short messages.

No long conversations.

And now—

she was finally back.

For the first time in weeks, something inside Claire eased.

Not because the situation around her changed.

But because the only person she trusted completely had returned.

After school, the sky was painted in soft shades of gold and orange. Students walked out in groups, chatting and laughing.

Claire walked alone toward the small café across the street.

The familiar bell chimed softly as she pushed the door open.

And there she was.

Vienna sat near the window, calm as ever, stirring her drink slowly as if she had always been there.

Her presence was quiet.

Composed.

Steady.

Safe.

The moment Vienna looked up and saw her, her eyes softened.

"Claire."

Claire stopped for a second.

Then walked toward her and sat down across the table.

"…You're really back," she said softly.

Vienna gave a small smile. "I told you I would be."

They didn't hug.

They didn't overreact.

But the silence between them felt comfortable instead of empty.

Vienna observed her closely for a few seconds.

"You look more tired," she said bluntly.

Claire let out a faint breath. "A lot happened."

"I figured," Vienna replied calmly. "Your messages became shorter after the second month I was away."

Of course she noticed.

She always did.

The waiter placed their drinks and left. A quiet atmosphere settled around their table.

Vienna leaned forward slightly.

"…Tell me everything."

Not "Are you okay?"

Not "What's wrong?"

Just—

Tell me everything.

And that alone made Claire's guarded expression soften just a little.

She wrapped her fingers around her cup.

"…You remember Randy, right?" Claire began quietly.

Vienna nodded. "Your childhood friend. Our families know each other."

"Yes," Claire said slowly.

A small pause followed before she continued,

"But that's not the full truth."

Vienna didn't interrupt.

She simply listened.

"I only started remembering properly recently," Claire admitted. "About my past. About my childhood."

Her voice grew softer.

"My father… is in prison."

Vienna's eyes sharpened slightly, but she remained silent.

"He caused the accident," Claire continued, her gaze lowering. "The one that almost killed my mom and me."

The café suddenly felt quieter.

"I survived," she said. "But the trauma was severe. I lost a large part of my memories after that."

A long silence followed.

"I don't remember half of my childhood clearly," Claire added. "Faces, events… even emotions. Everything became fragmented."

Vienna's expression turned serious now.

"And Randy?" she asked calmly.

Claire's fingers tightened slightly.

"He was there during that period," she replied. "His family helped my mother. Supported us. Stayed close."

Vienna nodded slowly, processing the information.

"So to you, he wasn't just a friend," she concluded. "He was someone connected to your survival period."

"…Yes."

Another quiet pause.

"But recently," Claire continued, "as my memories started returning bit by bit… I realized something."

Vienna's gaze didn't waver.

"Randy isn't just a kind childhood friend," Claire said softly. "He's someone who has always been watching over my life more closely than I realized."

The words were calm.

But heavy.

"He always knows things he shouldn't know," she added. "Small details. Conversations. Movements."

Vienna rested her chin lightly on her hand.

"And that made you cautious."

"Yes."

Claire exhaled slowly before continuing.

"And then there's Miko."

Vienna's eyes flickered slightly in interest.

"The boy who always stays near you after class?" she asked.

Claire looked slightly surprised.

"You noticed even through messages?"

"You mentioned him more than once before your texts became shorter," Vienna replied simply.

A faint silence passed.

"Randy asked me directly yesterday," Claire said. "He knew I had been getting closer to Miko."

Vienna's expression grew colder.

"And you never told him."

"I didn't."

"Which means," Vienna continued calmly, "someone informed him."

Claire nodded slowly.

"Yes. Most likely Diana. She observes a lot."

Another pause.

"And Randy…" Claire hesitated slightly. "He doesn't like Miko."

"Jealous," Vienna concluded immediately.

Claire didn't deny it.

"He hides it well," she said quietly. "But his tone changes whenever Miko is mentioned. His questions become more specific. More possessive."

The word lingered in the air.

Possessive.

"I think," Claire continued, "that he feels threatened by Miko's presence near me."

Vienna leaned back, analyzing every detail.

"And because of your past," she said, "you cannot easily cut Randy off."

Claire's grip tightened around her cup.

"…Yes."

Her voice softened.

"My memories are incomplete. And Randy is one of the few people connected to the part of my life I don't fully remember."

Silence fell between them.

Deep and understanding.

"So you're staying close to him," Vienna said calmly, "not out of affection, but to recover missing pieces of your memory."

Claire looked up.

"…Exactly."

For the first time, someone understood her strategy without her needing to explain every layer.

"And distancing yourself from Miko," Vienna added, "is to avoid triggering Randy's jealousy and unnecessary attention."

Claire nodded faintly.

"Miko did nothing wrong," she whispered. "He's kind. Observant. And honest."

A small pause.

"But the more I'm openly close to him, the more Randy watches."

Vienna's gaze sharpened.

"And you don't want Miko dragged into something complicated."

"Yes."

The answer came without hesitation.

For a moment, Vienna stayed silent, then spoke in a calm but firm tone,

"You're carrying trauma, incomplete memories, a protective childhood friend with controlling tendencies, and a growing jealousy dynamic."

Claire blinked slightly.

"That sounds… serious when you say it like that."

"Because it is," Vienna replied simply.

Another silence followed, softer this time.

Then Vienna looked directly into her eyes.

"But one thing is clear."

Claire waited.

"You're not acting cold," Vienna said. "You're acting strategically."

The words landed gently.Accurately.

"I had no one I could tell," Claire admitted quietly. "If I talk about my father, my trauma, or my missing memories… people would only see me as unstable."

Vienna shook her head slightly.

"You're not unstable," she said calmly. "You're traumatized and cautious. That's different."

Claire's chest tightened faintly.

Relief.

Understanding.

Trust.

"And Claire," Vienna continued softly, "you don't trust many people."

"…No."

"But you still chose to tell me everything the moment I returned."

Claire looked down at her cup for a second before answering honestly,

"You're the only one I trust."

A gentle silence settled between them.

Then Vienna gave a small, steady smile.

"Good," she said.

Claire looked up.

"Because now you're not dealing with this alone anymore."

Outside the café window, the evening light slowly dimmed.

And for the first time in months,

Claire felt her mind quiet slightly.

Not because her problems disappeared.

Not because Randy's presence became less complicated.

Not because her memories suddenly returned.

But because the one person who knew her past,

understood her trauma,

and saw through her strategic distance—

Was finally back by her side.
