Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

Bruno licked his lips and looked down at the necklaces again.

Then he looked back at Adam.

"But if your organization already exists," he began carefully, "then why are yo-"

Adam raised one finger.

Bruno stopped at once.

Adam did not need volume.

"The next time you ask me a question," Adam said, "understand something clearly. Your boss will not be the only one behind your neck. Our people will be there too."

The words landed exactly as intended.

Bruno went silent.

Fear moved across his face so openly that Adam almost pitied him.

Almost.

'Good. Keep him afraid. Fear is the leash here.' Adam thought.

Bruno lowered his head. "Forgive me," he said quickly. "I won't ask another question."

Adam studied him for a moment.

This was why men like Bruno survived as long as they did. They knew when to act vicious and when to kneel.

But this was not enough yet.

Fear faded if it was not fed.

'Leave him with just enough hope to obey, and just enough dread to never relax.' Adam thought.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a card.

It was small, plain, and completely white.

No name.

No symbol.

No address.

Nothing.

He held it out.

"Take it," Adam said.

Bruno looked confused, but he obeyed.

He turned the card over once, then twice, staring at the blank surface as if hidden ink might suddenly appear.

Adam noticed the hesitation and felt a small measure of approval.

The threat had settled properly.

"Write your number on it," Adam said.

Understanding came immediately.

Bruno fumbled for a pen he already had with him, uncapped it, and wrote a number carefully across the blank card. His hand was not steady.

Adam watched every movement.

'You're still scared enough to shake. Good. That means you won't test me right away.' Adam thought.

When Bruno finished, he slid the card back across the table.

Adam took it, checked the number once, and slipped it away.

No extra words were needed.

That was another reason the blank card worked so well. It told Bruno everything he needed to understand.

No identity.

No trace.

Only contact, when permitted.

A blank card looked cheaper than a threat, but to men like Bruno it felt much worse.

Bruno kept staring at Adam, clearly trying not to think about how much an organization with blank cards and underground diamonds might know about him.

Adam saw that fear working and let it grow.

'Good. Keep imagining the worst. It saves me from having to explain anything.' Adam thought.

He rose from his seat.

Bruno followed him with his eyes immediately, as tense as a dog waiting for the next command.

Adam adjusted the cane in his grip and said, "I'll call you."

Then he paused.

Just long enough.

Fear liked silence. Silence gave it room to grow.

Adam turned his head slightly and looked down at Bruno again.

"And one more thing," he said.

Bruno's throat moved.

He swallowed.

"If you even think about betraying us," Adam continued, "or if you even think about trying to find us, you already know the ending."

That was enough.

Bruno did know.

Or, more accurately, he knew enough to imagine something worse than whatever Adam might have said outright.

That was better.

People obeyed harder when their own fear filled in the missing details.

'Never describe the blade if the threat of it already cuts deeper inside their head.' Adam thought.

Bruno nodded quickly. Too quickly. "I understand. I understand."

Adam did not answer.

He turned and began walking away from the table.

Behind him, the coffee shop noise continued like nothing important had happened.

Normal sounds.

And at the corner table, a terrified man sat clutching a bag filled with illegal diamonds and a secret that could get him killed.

'Good. Let the pressure stay on him. That will keep him useful.' Adam thought.

He kept walking.

Adam reached the door and pushed it open.

He did not look back.

The meeting had gone better than expected.

Bruno had folded fast.

Faster than he should have.

That made Adam cautious, not relaxed.

'Fear makes men obedient. It also makes men stupid, desperate, and dangerous when they have time to think.' Adam thought.

That meant he would need to move carefully from here.

Still, the first step was done.

He had a point of contact inside an underground network.

He had a way to move illegal jewelry without putting his own face at the front.

And more importantly, he had done it while wearing a face that did not belong to Adam at all.

That mattered.

'One piece placed. Many more to go. But the next move has to be cleaner than the last.' Adam thought.

Then he disappeared into the street.
