Chapter 122 - The Mire Keeps Its Promises

The clearing accepted him a second time.

Not as it had before—quiet, watchful, curious.

Now it knew him.

The air shifted the moment Elex crossed into it, pressing closer, testing the edges of something it had not expected to meet again so soon. The trees did not move, but their shadows deepened, gathering as though drawn inward by his presence.

Kael remained at the boundary.

He did not argue this time.

He only watched.

Elex stepped forward alone.

The silence thickened.

Then—

They were there.

Not arriving.

Not emerging.

Simply standing where the space decided they belonged.

Three figures.

Still.

Veiled.

Unmoved by his return.

"You came back," one of them said.

Her voice carried no surprise.

Only quiet acknowledgment.

Elex stopped a few paces away.

"I didn't get what I came for."

A pause.

"Nor will you," another replied.

There was no edge to it.

No challenge.

Just certainty.

Elex's gaze moved between them, measuring, patient in a way that did not soften him.
