Chapter 39 - The First Surrender

The first surrender was simple—no battle, no thunder, yet it pulled her under, for she turned to the dark… and asked what it could offer.

~~~~~
The forest had not been the same since the night he came. Even the wind moved cautiously as if it feared disturbing something unseen.
And when night returned again.... it did not come alone.
Gyanwati sat beneath the tree, lost in thought, she hadn't been able to sleep for nights.
The memory of the king of Patallok returned to her mind.
his words from the previous night.
She shook the thought away.
"No" she muttered to herself.
"He is devil."
But even as she said it..... the questions he planted refused to leave her mind.
A faint breeze passed through trees.
Then his voice rose from the shadows.
"You look tired, Gyanwati."
Her head lifted at once.
He stood a few steps away...exactly where he had appeared the night before.
The king of Patallok watched her with the same calm expression as if he were simply there to continue a conversation left unfinished.
For a moment, Gyanwati said nothing.
Then she exhaled sharply.
"You again."
"I told you to stay away"
A faint smile touched his lips.
"Why?" he said softly "I am not here to harm you."
His movements slow and unthreatening.
"I know you tried everything you could to restore your powers… and nothing worked."
His gaze lingered on her face before he spoke again.
"You must feel forsaken."
Her eyes filled with anger.
"I am not forsaken."
"Of course" he said gently. "But you did call to Him, didn't you?"
Her jaw tightened.
"You prayed."
"You begged Him to help you complete your ritual"
His voice remained calm, almost kind.
"And yet…He did nothing."
The words struck deeper than she expected.
"He had His reasons" she replied quickly.
"Did He?"
He stepped forward, with his hands behind his back.
"Let us think about this…together."
His tone was patient, almost thoughtful.
"Your God controls everything in this universe.... doesn't he?"
"The wind moves because He allows it."
"The rain falls because He commands it."
"Life begins when He wills it and ends when He decides."
Gyanwati looked away "That is how the world works"
"Exactly" he said quietly.
"Which means your ritual did not fail by chance."
She slowly turned back toward him.
"If He truly wanted you to succeed, He could have made it happen."
His words settled heavily in the air.
"You are powerful, Gyanwati" he continued.
"You had knowledge others could not even imagine."
He paused.
"And yet…the moment you tried to step beyond the limits set for you…"
"Everything was taken away."
Her breathing slowed.
He watched her carefully.
"Tell me something," he said softly.
"Why would god refuse power to someone as capable as you?"
Gyanwati's voice was quiet when she answered. "I made a mistake."
"Did you?" His eyes held hers.
"Or did you simply try to become more than what He allowed?"
The question lingered.
"You wanted to master a power that could change the world."
He took another slow step forward.
"And for that…He forsaken you."
Her heart began to race. "No" she whispered.
"He didn't forsake me."
But her voice no longer held the same certainty.
The devil's expression did not change.
"Perhaps" he said calmly "He simply did not want you to have that power."
"Perhaps He feared what you might become."
Gyanwati's thoughts twisted.
It carried a strange, unsettling logic.
"Why should your destiny be decided by someone who sit above the heavens?" he continued quietly.
"Why should your power depend on whether a god choose to grant it?"
He studied her face once more.
"You were not meant to live your life begging for permission."
"You were meant to rise."
The forest wind stirred around them.
For a long moment, Gyanwati remained silent.
Her mind replayed everything....
the ritual,
her prayers,
her failure,
the silence that followed.
And slowly… the anger she had carried began to shift into something else.
A question.
She lifted her eyes towards him.
The king of Patallok stood watching her calmly, he had been waiting for this moment all along.
This time she did not ask him to leave.
Instead, she spoke quietly—
"Then tell me…"
She hesitated for only a breath.
"What can you offer me?"
