Chapter 33 - Chapter 28 : Into the Shadowed Wilds ( Season 2 ) #7

The morning sun had barely crested the jagged eastern peaks of the academy's sacred mountain range, yet the lower labor quarters were already engulfed in their usual damp, bone-chilling mist. While the rest of the weary labor servants prepared themselves for another grueling day of physical toil under Overseer Lin's watchful and tyrannical eyes, Railin moved silently through the long, dark shadow of the lower perimeter wall.

His sudden, forced assignment to the infamous Waste Purification Vaults had granted him an unexpected, highly valuable privilege—a temporary wooden movement pass that allowed him to travel along the outer edges of the labor grounds to dump inert residue. To Overseer Lin, Railin was merely a doomed soul dragging out his final miserable days before succumbing to poisonous fumes. To Railin, however, this simple wooden pass was his long-awaited ticket to absolute freedom.

He had spent the early hours before dawn meticulously preparing for this excursion. Hidden beneath his inner tunic were the refined, potent contents of the failed pill cores he had processed during the dark hours of the night. The extra vital blood energy circulating through his body had given his muscles a subtle, explosive spring and rendered his sight and hearing with a deadly, predatory clarity. However, he was sharp enough to understand the absolute limits of alchemy waste. The Vaults contained immense energy, but to truly break through his physical limits and build a flawless foundation for his soul cultivation, he needed raw, living spirit herbs—herbs that had never been scorched or corrupted by an alchemist's furnace.

For that, he needed to enter the Dark Mist Forest.

The ancient, dense forest bordered the back of the Cultivation Academy, acting as a wild, natural barrier against the untamed mountain ranges beyond. While inner disciples frequently ventured into the regulated inner zones for official trials, combat practice, and hunting low-tier spirit beasts, the outer perimeter—choked with poisonous flora, treacherous terrain, and dangerous low-level monsters—was strictly off-limits to uncultivated labor servants. Entering without authorization meant brutal punishment, if the beasts didn't claim your life first.

Railin paused at the edge of the treeline, where the manicured stone paths of the academy abruptly gave way to a chaotic web of gnarled roots, damp earth, and ancient, towering pines. The air here was radically different—thick, cool, heavy with the scent of wet soil, decaying foliage, and the subtle, metallic tang of unrefined, wild spirit qi flowing from the deep veins of the earth.

He slipped the wooden pass deep into his pocket, took a long, steady breath to calm his beating heart, and stepped beneath the dense shadow of the ancient canopy.

The oppressive darkness of the forest swallowed him instantly. High above, the morning sunlight struggled to pierce the thick, intertwined layer of leaves and branches, leaving the forest floor shrouded in a perpetual, eerie twilight gloom. Moss-covered boulders, towering ferns, and dangerous thorned bushes lined the muddy ground, while the distant, echoing calls of strange, avian beasts resounded through the mist-laden trees.

Railin did not wander aimlessly into the wild. Harnessing the vast knowledge from his past life and relying on his heightened soul perception, he mentally mapped out the geography of the forest's outer ring. He deliberately avoided the clear, marked trails used by the academy's routine patrol units, choosing instead to navigate through dense, untouched thickets where rare, wild herbs were far more likely to take root undisturbed.

If I can find a single root of Three-Leaf Shadow Grass or a healthy stalk of Iron-Vein Vine in these outer reaches, I can synthesize a true Body-Forging Elixir, Railin thought, his dark, calculating eyes scanning the undergrowth with surgical precision. My current physical strength is more than enough to handle bullies like Gu Kang, but against an outer disciple who has opened their spiritual sea, I am still far too vulnerable.

He moved like a phantom through the thick brush. His footsteps were entirely soundless, a lethal discipline perfected through weeks of hiding his true breath and energy in the cramped labor quarters. Every few dozen yards, he came to a complete halt, extending a razor-thin thread of his Ashen Devouring Qi into the damp air to sense the subtle, invisible fluctuations of natural spirit energy vibrating through the foliage.

After nearly an hour of deep, methodical navigation, his heightened soul sense picked up a faint, distinct tremor in the surrounding spirit qi.

It was a sweet, slightly metallic aroma lingering near a misty, shadows-draped cliffside up ahead. Railin instantly altered his trajectory, creeping cautiously through the dense fern growth toward a deep, narrow ravine carved directly into the ancient granite face of the mountain.

There, growing precariously inside the dark crevices of the wet cliff wall, was a lush cluster of pale, silver-veined plants. Their delicate leaves shimmered with a soft, ethereal light in the gloom, quietly absorbing the rich moisture from the mountain mist.

Silver-Vein Ghost Grass.

The corners of Railin's lips curved into a faint, cold smile. This was a rare, mid-grade wild herb used primarily by high-tier alchemists to refine soul-soothing pills. To ordinary cultivators and standard alchemists, harvesting this plant was notoriously difficult because its volatile spirit energy evaporated within minutes of being plucked from the soil. But for Railin, whose Ashen Devouring Qi could instantly swallow, isolate, and lock away energy without losing a single drop, it was an absolute treasure.

He approached the cliffside with extreme caution, keeping his body low to the wet earth, hidden behind the natural cover of the ferns. He reached out his right hand, his fingers hovering merely inches away from the glowing silver leaves.

CRACK!

The sharp, sudden snap of a dry twig echoed violently through the quiet ravine.

Railin froze on the spot. In a single, fluid, and instinctual motion, he withdrew his hand, shifted his weight back, and completely melted into the deep shadow of a massive, moss-covered boulder standing nearby. He held his breath, pulling his dark energy entirely into the deepest recess of his dantian, suppressing his heart rate until he appeared as lifeless as the cold granite behind him.

A few yards away, the thick bushes were shoved aside with heavy, careless force.

Two young men stepped out into the open ravine. They wore the crisp, dark blue robes of outer disciples, long silver-sheathed swords hanging proudly at their waists. Their posture was relaxed, arrogant, and devoid of any real vigilance.

"I'm telling you, Senior Brother Chen," the younger of the two said, casually kicking a loose rock down the sloping ravine. "The monitoring elder in the outer hall said the array detected a clear anomaly somewhere in this exact sector. A sudden, violent spike in spatial qi."

The taller disciple—the one named Chen—had sharp eyes and a cold, haughty demeanor. He scanned the misty ravine with open disdain. "Spatial qi? In this damp, worthless outer wasteland? The monitoring array must have glitched again. Only high-tier grand elders or ancient, lost relics can disturb the fabric of space. Why on earth would such a magnificent thing manifest in a pathetic outer forest?"

"Still, we are obligated to investigate," the first disciple grumbled, shaking his head in annoyance. "If we actually manage to find something unusual, the contribution points awarded by the Inner Hall will be more than enough for us to purchase a whole month's supply of high-grade Spirit Gathering Pills."

Railin remained completely motionless within the dark shadows, his pulse slow, cold, and steady as ice. Through the tiny gap between the mossy rocks, he carefully observed the two disciples. Both of them were clearly at the third or fourth level of the Spirit Refining Realm. Their spirit qi was stable and refined, their physical movements disciplined—far superior to low-grade bullies like Gu Kang or mid-level managers like Overseer Lin. In a direct, open confrontation, fighting two outer disciples simultaneously without exposing his dark, forbidden Qi would be exceedingly difficult and dangerous.

A spatial anomaly? Railin quietly captured every single word in his mind. The academy's grand monitoring array detected a spatial disturbance right here...

Senior Brother Chen paced around the floor of the ravine, his casual gaze sweeping right past the hidden crevice where the Silver-Vein Ghost Grass grew. "There is nothing here except useless wild weeds and wet mud. Let's head further north toward the restricted perimeter. If we waste too much time down here, the patrol captains will report us for slacking off."

"Fine, fine," the other disciple sighed, turning on his heel. "But if the hall master chews us out later, I'm blaming your impatience."

The two outer disciples turned around, their blue robes rustling as they began walking back up the forest slope, their voices gradually fading into the dense, foggy canopy above.

Railin waited in absolute silence for several long minutes, allowing his heightened soul sense to meticulously track their receding qi signatures until they completely disappeared over the distant ridge. Only when he was a hundred percent certain of their departure did he step softly out from behind the mossy boulder.

He looked down at the pale, shimmering Silver-Vein Ghost Grass, then turned his gaze toward the dark, misty northern ridge where the disciples had mentioned the spatial anomaly.

"A disturbance in the fabric of space..." Railin whispered into the quiet air, his raspy voice laced with a deep, dangerous curiosity.

Moving swiftly, he harvested the Silver-Vein Ghost Grass with surgical care, wrapping it tightly in a clean cloth and storing it securely within the inner folds of his tunic. The fresh, untamed herb essence immediately reacted with the dark embers within his dantian, sending a cool, invigorating sensation washing over his consciousness.

Instead of turning back toward the relative safety of the labor quarters, Railin turned his face toward the shrouded, uncharted woods of the deep north.

The academy was a cage—a place overflowing with arrogant disciples, petty overseers, and blind elders. But out here, buried within the forgotten shadows of the wild mountains, lay ancient secrets and unexpected opportunities that could dramatically accelerate his rise to absolute power.

Railin tightened the leather strap around his waist, his pitch-black eyes burning with an unyielding, lethal resolve.

Without a single moment of hesitation, he stepped deeper into the thick forest mist, leaving the safe boundaries of the academy behind as he forged his way toward the secret heart of the mountain.
