I walked away before I could change my mind.
That was the hardest part.
Not leaving.
Not putting distance between Brandon and me.
But forcing my feet to keep moving when every part of me wanted to turn around.
I could still feel his eyes on my back.
I didn't have to look to know.
There had been something in his voice when he apologized.
Something broken.
Something that sounded dangerously close to the boy I remembered.
The boy who used to make me laugh when I wanted to cry.
The boy who had once looked at me like I was the safest place in the world.
And that was exactly why I couldn't stay.
Because I knew what happened when I let myself get close to him.
I knew how quickly my heart forgot every reason I had built walls around it.
So I kept walking.
My fingers tightened around the strap of my bag as I moved through the courthouse corridor.
