Chapter 496: Route 214

~Third POV~

[Sinnoh Region, Next Day, Route 214 – Campsite]

The morning sun crawled over the jagged horizon of the Sinnoh region, casting long, amber shadows across the tall grass and rocky road of Route 214. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of dew-heavy pines and the faint, metallic tang of ozone that still seemed to cling to their clothes.

For Azure, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the calm was a jarring contrast to the chaos of the previous night.

"Sizzle… crackle!"

The sound of a portable camping stove was the only thing competing with the morning bird-call of Starly. Diamond, ever the dedicated chef of the group, stood over a wide skillet, his eyes half-lidded but his hands moving with practiced precision as he flipped rows of perfectly golden-brown Oran Berry pancakes.

Dia murmured, his voice thick with the remnants of lack of sleep, "Breakfast is almost ready, guys."

Beside him, his Munchlax, Lax, was vibrating with such intensity that his fur seemed to hum, his mouth already agape in anticipation. Azure sat on a fallen log, his posture relaxed but his eyes constantly scanning the perimeter.

On his right shoulder, his partner Pikachu was busy grooming his yellow fur, his ears twitching at every rustle in the grass. Perched precariously atop Azure's head, an Eevee let out a tiny yawn, stretching its paws forward until its claws poked slightly into Azure's hair. And tucked deeply into the oversized pocket of his tactical jacket, a small Pichu (Mew) snored softly, a tiny bubble of saliva expanding and contracting with its breath.

Pearl said, his voice dropping an octave as he looked back toward the distant silhouette of Veilstone City, "Still can't believe we're actually sitting here…"

He was frantically polishing a Poké Ball, his hands shaking just a fraction as he continued, "That explosion… Azure, I thought for sure he was done for. I saw the light. I felt the ground shake like the world was splitting open."

Platinum, sitting on a folding chair with her back straight and her expression regal despite the dirt smudging her cheek, nodded solemnly. She was holding a brush, gently smoothing the pristine, cloud-like wings of her newly evolved Altaria.

The dragon-bird cooed softly, though it flinched occasionally where the singe marks of the previous night's battle had been treated. Platinum whispered, her eyes narrowing, "The Galactic weapon… To fire such a device in the middle of a populated city… they have no regard for life. If it wasn't for Azure's Porygon-Z…"

Azure reached into his pocket and pulled out his Arc Phone. The screen flickered, and the digital face of Porygon-Z winked at them.

Azure said, his voice cool but flavored with a hint of grim satisfaction, "Five seconds. The countdown gave us just enough of a window. Porygon-Z synchronized with the Rotom Phone's internal lattice and boosted the Teleport range to its absolute limit. We were two miles away by the time the shockwave hit the Gym district."

A soft, melodic chime drew their attention to the center of the camp, "Bliiiis-sey! (There! That should do it!)"

Azure's Blissey, the veteran medic of his team, moved with surprising grace between the resting Pokémon. She was currently waving her tiny hands over Azure's newly evolved Infernape.

The great fire ape lay on a bed of soft moss, his flame crown flickering at a low, resting simmer. Beside him, Scyther, Hisuian-Liligant, and Froslass were draped in bandages soaked in Potion and Revive-shards.

Platinum's Lopunny sat nearby, her ears drooping as Blissey applied a cooling gel to her bruised joints. The battle against the Veilstone Gym Leader and the subsequent ambush by Galactic Grunts had pushed them all to the brink without any aid.

Azure said calmly, standing up and dusting off his trousers, "We were lucky. But luck isn't a strategy. Team Galactic is escalating. They aren't just using Pokémon anymore; they're using heavy ordinance. If we're going to get you to Mt. Coronet, we need to stop being targets and start being a force they're afraid to touch."

Pearl looked up, his eyes flashing with his usual fire as he asked in a confused tone, "How? My Chimler is strong, and Tauler is a beast, but those Grunts… they just keep coming. Like Zubats in a cave."

Azure smirked, a look that usually meant a grueling training session was imminent, as he replied in a cool voice, "Quantity is countered by Quality. You three picked up some heavy hitters at the Game Corner. It's time they stopped being 'additions' and started being 'monsters'."

Azure stepped into a clear patch of dirt, his hand sweeping toward his belt as he added, "I'm calling in the instructors."

*Click x5*

Five Poké Balls soared into the air, enlarging in flight before bursting open in a symphony of brilliant white light…

*BOOM*

The first to materialize was a Tyranitar. The ground beneath the campsite groaned under his massive weight. He stood tall, his green, armor-like hide scarred from a hundred battles in the Johto League. He let out a low, vibrating growl that caused the milk in Dia's cereal bowl to ripple, "Gwaaaa-rrr… (Top of the morning to ya!)"

*Screee-shoo*

Next came a Dragonite. Unlike the friendly, mail-delivering versions often seen, this female Dragonite carried an air of absolute authority. Her wings were powerful, her eyes sharp. She landed with a deceptive lightness, a soft thud that spoke of immense muscle control, "Drao! (Hello again little ones. Do you need a thrashing again?)"

A flash of purple and a chill in the air signaled the arrival of Azure's Shiny Gengar. Her ghostly form drifted out of the shadows, her crimson eyes glowing with mischievous malice.

She stuck her tongue out, tossing a Shadow Ball like a stress ball between her paws, "Kikiki! (Who's the fresh meat!)."

*Schwing*

A Scizor appeared next, its metallic red exoskeleton gleaming in the morning sun. He didn't make a sound, simply snapping his massive shears with the speed of a guillotine. Finally, a massive Arcanine manifested with a cry, "Awoooo-ruff! (Good to meet you all again. Hopefully you do better young ones.)"

His fur was a thick mane of cream and orange, and the heat radiating from his body was like standing next to a furnace. He immediately began sniffing the air, his tail wagging once before he settled into a high-ground sentry position.

The three Dex Holders stared, their breakfast forgotten. Even Platinum looked stunned. These weren't just Pokémon; they were paragons of their species.

Azure called out, "Dia. Bring 'Tar' over here."

Diamond blinked, wiped a stray bit of pancake syrup from his chin, and let his Larvitar named Tar out. The little rock-skin Pokémon looked up at the towering Tyranitar with a starry-eyed expression of awe.

The difference was comical—a pebble standing before a mountain. The Tyranitar looked down, gave a smug, toothy grin growled, "Grrr? (So I get to teach my own student like Big Sis. Here let me show you something cool!)"

*WHIP-CRACK*

... and then suddenly slammed his tail into the ground. A small tremor shook the earth, and a localized Sandstorm began to swirl around the two of them.

Azure explained with Tar's awed expression at Tyranitar, "Tyranitar is going to teach Tar how to command the ground, not just live on it. He'll also be showing Platinum's Gible how to utilize Ground-type energy for more than just digging holes. If you can't control the battlefield, you shouldn't be on it."

Azure turned to the blonde boy as he stated calmly, "Pearl. Your Dratini, Ryu. Bring her to Dragonite."

Pearl's Dratini slithered out, looking intimidated by the massive orange dragon towering over her. Dragonite leaned down, nuzzling the small Dratini gently before her expression turned stern.

She let out a sharp cry and pointed toward the sky. Azure explained, "Dragonite will teach Ryu how to use Dragon-type moves, which aren't just about raw power; they're about the internal energy of the heart. She'll also help Gible with his Dragon-type foundations. Gible has the potential, but he's sloppy. Dragonite will fix that."

Platinum stepped forward, her eyes landing on the shimmering Gengar, asking, "And for my team?"

Azure acknowledged as he began explaining to them, "Your Alakazam is brilliant, but he lacks the unpredictability of a Ghost. My Gengar is going to work with Dia's Hush and your team. She'll teach them the moves they don't teach in textbooks. Pain Split, Destiny Bond… the kind of moves that make an opponent regret ever starting a fight."

Gengar let out a cackle and disappeared into the shadow of a nearby tree, only to reappear behind Diamond, poking him in the ribs before vanishing again. Azure continued, petting the massive fire-dog's muzzle, "Arcanine is our shield. His nose is better than any radar. If a Galactic Grunt even thinks about approaching within a mile, he'll know. While he's on watch, he'll be tutoring your Fire-types. Chimler, Sol, and Platinum's Ponyta. He'll show them how to condense their flames. Most trainers let their fire spread thin. Arcanine will teach them how to make it burn white-hot."

Pearl asked, watching the red Pokémon sharpen his claws on a nearby rock, "And the Scizor?"

Azure said bluntly with an eager grin, "He's your nightmare. For the next hour, and every time we stop to rest, you're going to cycle your teams against him. He's faster than you, stronger than you, and he won't go easy. You need to learn how to strategize on your feet when the opponent is vastly superior."

The seriousness of the situation settled over the group. The breakfast plates were cleared in record time. With that began their training…

The campsite transformed into a battlefield of disciplines.

In the sandy pit created by Tyranitar, Tar the Larvitar was struggling. The massive Tyranitar stomped the ground, forcing the ground to buckle and heave.

Azure shouted over the howling wind of the sandstorm, "Focus, Dia! Tar needs to sense the vibrations! Don't look with your eyes, look with your feet!"

Diamond took a deep breath, mimicking his Pokémon's stance as he commanded, "Tar! Deep breaths! Feel the pulse of the vibrations!"

The little Larvitar gritted its teeth. Its small feet dug into the churning soil. Suddenly, its eyes glowed a faint brown…

*Rumble*

… A jagged pillar of rock erupted from the ground, intercepting Tyranitar's next stomp. The veteran Pokémon paused, giving a slow, approving nod.

Azure noted, "Good. Now, again! Louder!"

Nearby, the air was shimmering with Draconic energy. Dragonite was hovering ten feet in the air, her wings creating rhythmic gusts of wind. Ryu the Dratini was coiled on a flat rock, trying to mimic the glow emanating from Dragonite's orbs.

Pearl commanded, "Ryu, use Dragon Breath!"

The Dratini unleashed a thin, flickering wisp of purple flame. Dragonite barely moved, swatting the attack away with a single claw as if it were a Pesky Combee. She let out a sharp, disappointed bark and then demonstrated.

*WHOO-OOM*

Dragonite opened her maw, and a beam of concentrated violet energy tore through the air, vaporizing a boulder fifty yards downstream. The sheer pressure of the move sent Ryu tumbling backward.

Pearl whispered in awe, his eyes wide, "See that? That wasn't just a move. That was... that was like a laser."

Azure called out, walking over, explaining, "She's condensing the aura. Ryu is trying to 'spit' the fire. Tell her to breathe it from her center, not her throat."

In the shade of the forest edge, the atmosphere was much creepier. Platinum's Alakazam sat in a meditative pose, but his spoons were vibrating. Gengar was circling him like a shark in the water, manifesting dozens of illusory copies of itself.

Diamond called out to his Duskull, "Hush, use Night Shade!"

*Zap*

Hush fired the beam of dark energy, but Gengar simply opened her mouth and swallowed it. She then winked, tapped the Duskull on the head, and suddenly, Hush's body began to glow with a strange, flickering light.

Platinum observed, her scholarly mind recording every detail as she murmured, "She's showing him Pain Split… She's teaching him how to link his life force to the opponent's. It's… morbid, but incredibly efficient for a defensive Pokémon like Duskull."

Azure said knowingly, joining in on their conversation, "Exactly. In a battle, the goal isn't just to win. It's to make sure the other guy can't take you down with him—or if he does, you take him with you."

The most intense part of the camp was the 'Gauntlet.'

Scizor stood in the center of a grassy clearing. One by one, the trio's primary Pokémon were rotated in.

*Clang*

Pearl's Heracross, Herc, charged with a Megahorn, his massive horn glowing with green energy. Scizor didn't even move until the last millisecond.

*Zipp*

With a burst of speed that left an afterimage, Scizor appeared behind Heracross…

*Thwack*

A blunt hit from the back of his claw sent the beetle-Pokémon skidding across the grass. Pearl yelled, though he was frustrated, "Too slow! Herc, again! Aerial Ace into a Close Combat!"

Scizor parried every strike.

*Ting*

*Tang*

*Clang*

The metallic sounds echoed through the valley like a blacksmith at work. Scizor was a blur of crimson, moving with a terrifying grace. He wasn't just fighting; he was teaching them the futility of mindless aggression.

Platinum whispered, watching her Empoleon try to pin the Scizor down with Whirlpool, "He's waiting for the opening… He's baiting the attack."

Azure watched as he nodded, responding to her question, "Correct. Team Galactic Grunts are predictable. They use sheer numbers and aggressive moves. If you can learn to dance around a Scizor who actually knows how to counter-attack, a dozen Grunts with Stunky and Golbat will feel like they're moving in slow motion."

[Sinnoh Region, 1 Hour Later, Route 214 – Campsite]

An hour passed…

The group was drenched in sweat, their Pokémon panting, but their eyes brighter than they had been in weeks. Azure whistled sharply, "Whewww… good work."

Immediately, the veterans ceased their training. Tyranitar let the sandstorm dissipate. Dragonite landed softly.

Gengar merged into Azure's shadow. Scizor sheathed his claws with a satisfying shick. Arcanine loped back from his sentry post, his tongue lolling out.

Azure announced, "Break time."

The kids slumped to the ground, exhausted but exhilarated. Pearl panted, grabbing a canteen of water, "I've never... seen training like that. I thought I was a good trainer. But your Scizor... he didn't even use a move. He just... moved."

Azure said bluntly, leaning his body against a tree, "That's the difference between a trainer and a Champion."

He pulled a small bag of high-grade Poké-treats out and began tossing them to his veterans. Arcanine caught him in mid-air with a joyful crunch. Azure continued, his voice softening slightly, "You guys have the heart. And you have the talent. But you've been playing by League rules. Team Galactic isn't a Gym Leader. They won't wait for you to make your move. They won't stop when your Pokémon is 'unable to battle'. They took a shot at our lives in Veilstone."

Platinum looked at her Gible, who was currently trying (and failing) to lift a rock half its size, inspired by Tyranitar. She looked back at Azure as she asked, "You've done this before. Not just badges and contests. You've fought people like them."

Azure looked up at the sky, his mind drifting back to the chaos of his life—to the battles against Teams that sought to rewrite reality itself as he replied, "Something like that. Sinnoh is a beautiful place, Platinum. But its myths aren't just bedtime stories. Trust me, some legends and myths do EXIST that can change the world..."

Diamond, who had been uncharacteristically quiet, handed a fresh pancake to Azure's Pikachu and said, "We won't let them. We're going to get her to the peak of the mountain. And we're going to get stronger, just like Tar did today."

Azure smiled. It was a real one this time as he replied knowingly, "I know you will. That's why I'm here."

He checked the time on his Arc Phone, stating, "We've got a long walk ahead of us. Route 214 is long, and the terrain gets rough toward the lake. We'll keep the veterans out. Arcanine will lead the way, and Scizor will bring up the rear. We'll stay off the main path—Galactic will likely be patrolling the paved roads."

Pearl asked, already looking like he wanted another round with Dragonite, "What about the training?"

Azure promised as he replied to Pearl's concern, "Two hours every evening when we make camp. And every time we find a Pokémon Center or a safe house, we pull an all-nighter. By the time we hit the slopes of Coronet, I want your Pokémon to be able to take down a Galactic Commander in their sleep."

Platinum stood up, sheathing her Poké Balls and smoothing her skirt. She looked toward the horizon with a newfound steel in her eyes as she declared, "Then let us proceed. The Berlitz name does not retreat, and with Azure's guidance, we shall not fall."

Azure grinned at her determination as he spoke softly, "Spoken like a champion. Alright, pack it up. Dia, save some of those pancakes for the road. Something tells me we're going to need the calories."

Dia chirped, already packing a thermal container, "Done and done!"

As the group gathered their gear and began the trek south, the atmosphere had shifted. The fear that had followed them out of Veilstone—the lingering trauma of the explosion and the narrow escape—had been replaced by a focused, quiet intensity.

Behind them, the campsite was nothing but trampled grass and charred spots on the earth. But as they walked, the heavy thud of Tyranitar's footsteps and the rhythmic beat of Dragonite's wings overhead served as a constant, reassuring reminder.

They were no longer just refugees. They were an army in the making.

*Crunch-crunch-crunch*

The sound of their boots on the gravel of Route 214 echoed through the silent morning. Azure led the way, his Pikachu sparking slightly with anticipation. Along the way, Azure thought, 'Hmm… I'm lacking a Water Type in my rotation… should I recall one of my older Pokémon or get one from the routes coming up… decision, decisions…'
