The three of them continued through the labyrinth.
Charles walked ahead, inscriptions glowing faintly across his arms as he scanned the surrounding darkness. Kennedy followed close behind, his eyes darting between the walls, searching for anything that resembled a pattern.
Ian walked silently.
His sword rested against his shoulder.
For once, he wasn't looking for an enemy.
He was listening.
The labyrinth had changed.
Or perhaps they had.
After everything they'd endured, the silence no longer felt completely empty. It felt like something was watching them from just beyond the darkness.
Then—
A familiar orange glow appeared ahead.
Charles stopped.
Kennedy nearly walked into him.
"What?"
Charles pointed.
Someone was standing in the distance.
A girl.
Her clothes were torn, her orange aura still flickering around her body, but she was standing upright.
Sonia.
Kennedy's eyes widened.
"Sonia!"
She turned.
For a moment, her expression was pure relief.
"Charles?"
Ian immediately lowered his sword.
"Sonia!"
She ran toward them.
The four met in the middle of the corridor.
Charles grabbed her shoulders.
"Are you alright?"
Sonia breathed heavily.
"Yeah. I'm fine."
She looked behind them.
"Where are the others?"
"We don't know," Kennedy answered. "We've been looking everywhere."
Sonia nodded slowly.
"I was looking for them too."
Ian noticed something.
"You've already fought something."
Sonia looked down at her hands.
The red residue of her Avian aura still lingered around her fingers.
"Yeah."
Her expression hardened.
"I found one of the Ghouls."
Charles studied her.
"And?"
"I won."
Kennedy smiled faintly.
"Of course you did."
Sonia almost smiled back.
Almost.
Then—
A laugh echoed through the corridor.
Soft.
Almost playful.
Sonia's expression immediately changed.
Charles froze.
Ian's hand moved toward his sword.
Kennedy whispered—
"No..."
The darkness behind Sonia distorted.
A figure slowly emerged.
Tall.
Thin.
Wrong.
His body seemed to shift between several forms before finally settling into something vaguely humanoid.
Hegroth.
The high-level Ghoul smiled.
"Congratulations."
Nobody moved.
Hegroth tilted his head.
"You defeated your little nightmare."
Sonia's fists tightened.
"You."
"Me."
His smile widened.
"You all seem to think you've accomplished something."
He looked at Sonia.
"You fought the manifestation of your anger."
Then Charles.
"You questioned the architecture of your own mind."
Then Kennedy.
"You confronted the parts of yourself that wanted to rewrite reality."
Finally, his eyes settled on Ian.
"And you..."
His smile became almost sympathetic.
"You finally stopped fighting your father."
Ian's eyes narrowed.
"Don't."
Hegroth chuckled.
"Relax. I'm not here to ruin your little victories."
He spread his arms.
"I'm here to congratulate you."
The walls around them trembled.
Sonia looked around.
"What is this?"
Hegroth's grin returned.
"The next stage."
A deep rumble traveled through the labyrinth.
The corridor behind them stretched.
The ceiling disappeared into darkness.
The walls moved farther apart.
Charles immediately activated several inscriptions.
"No..."
The symbols projected around him.
He scanned the environment.
His expression slowly fell.
"That's impossible."
Kennedy looked at him.
"What?"
Charles swallowed.
"The structure is changing."
Hegroth laughed.
"Of course it is."
The labyrinth shifted again.
A corridor became a staircase.
The staircase became a canyon.
The canyon folded inward and became another corridor.
Doors appeared where there had been walls.
Walls appeared where there had been doors.
The very concept of distance seemed to lose meaning.
Sonia stared.
"You said we defeated our horrors."
"You did."
Hegroth shrugged.
"And now?"
He smiled.
"There's another."
Ian stepped forward.
"Another Ghoul?"
"Perhaps."
Hegroth's voice echoed from every direction.
"Perhaps your mother."
A whisper came from the darkness.
"Perhaps your father."
Another voice.
"Perhaps your regrets."
Another.
"Perhaps your fears."
Another.
"Perhaps something you haven't even discovered about yourself."
Sonia's orange aura flickered.
Charles looked at the walls.
"They're endless..."
"Now you're understanding."
Hegroth walked toward them.
"There is no final room."
His footsteps echoed.
"There is no final boss."
Another step.
"There is no magical door waiting for you at the end."
Another.
"There is only you..."
He pointed at them.
"...and whatever you haven't accepted yet."
Kennedy's expression hardened.
"So what? We just keep fighting?"
Hegroth smiled.
"That's the problem."
He leaned forward.
"You still think this is a battle."
Silence.
Charles narrowed his eyes.
"Then what is it?"
Hegroth's smile disappeared.
For the first time, his expression became completely serious.
"An infinite torment structure."
The words seemed to sink into the labyrinth itself.
"You defeat one manifestation, and another takes its place."
He gestured toward Sonia.
"You overcame anger."
Then toward Ian.
"You overcame the need for your father's approval."
Then Charles.
"You questioned your obsession with preventing mistakes."
Then Kennedy.
"You confronted the parts of yourself that wanted the world to validate your creativity."
His eyes glowed.
"But the labyrinth doesn't care."
The walls began closing around them.
"It will simply find another question."
Sonia stepped forward.
"And if we answer that one?"
"Another."
"And another?"
"Another."
Charles clenched his fist.
"So there really is no escape."
Hegroth smiled.
"Now you're getting it."
The four looked around.
The darkness seemed infinite.
No exits.
No landmarks.
No direction.
Nothing.
Hegroth slowly turned away.
"But there is a way."
Charles immediately looked up.
"How?"
Hegroth stopped.
He glanced over his shoulder.
The smile returned.
"Simple."
A pause.
"Surrender."
Silence.
Kennedy blinked.
"...What?"
"Surrender."
Ian's grip tightened around his sword.
"To you?"
Hegroth laughed.
"Oh, no."
He turned around completely.
"That's what you people always misunderstand."
His voice became strangely calm.
"I'm not asking you to surrender to me."
Charles stared at him.
"Then what are you talking about?"
Hegroth pointed toward the endless darkness.
"Stop trying to conquer it."
Sonia's eyes narrowed.
"You expect us to just give up?"
"No."
Hegroth shook his head.
"I'm asking you to surrender the idea that you must defeat everything inside yourself."
That sentence hit differently.
Charles said nothing.
Kennedy's eyes narrowed.
Ian looked down at his sword.
Sonia remembered her other self.
Her rage.
Her fear.
Her refusal to become that person.
Hegroth continued.
"You've been fighting yourselves since you entered this place."
His voice echoed.
"You fight your trauma."
"You fight your memories."
"You fight your regrets."
"You fight your fears."
"You fight your identities."
"And every time you defeat one..."
He snapped his fingers.
The labyrinth changed.
A dozen new doors appeared.
"...you expect yourselves to finally be complete."
His grin returned.
"But you're not."
The doors opened.
Behind each one was a different version of them.
Charles saw himself as a child.
Kennedy saw himself standing before an empty studio.
Ian saw his father.
Sonia saw her alternate self.
They all stared.
Hegroth whispered:
"You cannot kill every version of yourselves."
Sonia's fists slowly loosened.
Charles lowered his inscriptions.
Kennedy stopped reaching for his framework.
Ian's sword descended from his shoulder.
Hegroth watched carefully.
"That's the difference."
He smiled.
"The Ghouls want you to surrender yourself."
His eyes gleamed.
"But perhaps..."
He stepped backward into the darkness.
"...you need to surrender the fight against yourself."
And then—
He vanished.
The four remained standing.
Nobody spoke.
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then Charles finally broke it.
"...That bastard."
Kennedy exhaled.
"Yeah."
Ian looked around.
"So..."
He slowly raised his sword again.
"...what exactly does surrendering look like?"
Sonia stared into the endless labyrinth.
She smiled faintly.
"Maybe that's the point."
The darkness trembled.
And somewhere far away—
something laughed.
The labyrinth had heard them.
And for the first time...
it didn't attack.
