Nara and Jin-woo assigned us a new task the next day. They wanted us to return to the warehouse in the port area, but this time with more advanced equipment to try to track down the source of the dimensional energy and, if possible, obtain more samples of the dark fragments we had found.
"We believe these fragments are key," Nara explained. "They could give us information about how the Troubles are being modified and who's behind it."
We were given portable scanners that could detect dimensional energy more accurately and special containers to safely collect the samples. We returned to the warehouse with an even greater sense of unease than the last time. We knew the modified Troubles were there, and we didn't know how many more we might find.
This time we were more cautious, moving slowly and checking every corner. The scanners flickered constantly, indicating that dimensional energy remained strong throughout the building. We found more claw marks and some traces of a dark, viscous liquid we hadn't seen before.
As we explored a deeper section of the warehouse, we found a large room with strange machinery in the center. It looked like some kind of industrial equipment, but it was covered in rust and cobwebs and emitted a faint, constant hum. The energy scanners went crazy as we approached.
"This must be the source," Min-ah whispered, pointing at the machinery with her flashlight.
We approached cautiously. The machinery had several tubes and cables connected to a sort of central container that glowed with a faint reddish light, similar to the fragments we had found in the Troubles.
"Looks like they're using this for... something," I said, examining the strange setup.
Suddenly, we heard a noise behind us. We quickly turned around and saw two of the Spiny Troubles we had faced last time blocking the entrance to the room. They seemed to have been waiting for our arrival.
"They won't let us get close," Min-ah said, preparing to fight.
This time we were more prepared. Min-ah unleashed a gust of wind that blew one of the Troubles against the wall, while I focused on a pile of metal bars nearby. I levitated them and threw them at the other Trouble, hitting it hard and knocking it back.
The fight was intense, but we managed to keep the Troubles at bay. Min-ah used her wind to disorient them, and I took every opportunity to attack them with metal. I remembered the burst of energy I'd felt last time and tried to replicate it, but I couldn't. It seemed to only happen in times of great stress.
Finally, we managed to defeat the two Troubles, allowing them to fade into the darkness. We approached the machinery again and began to examine it more closely.
"Look at this," Min-ah said, pointing to a small metal plate on the side of the central container. A symbol was engraved on it, a circle with three lines radiating outward. I didn't recognize the symbol, but I had an unsettling feeling about it.
We took photos of the symbol and the machinery, and collected more samples of the shiny reddish material. We knew this information would be valuable to the Guardians. As we were about to leave, we heard a noise in the distance, a metallic sound that wasn't coming from the machinery. It seemed to be getting closer.
We looked at each other in alarm. We weren't alone in the warehouse.
