Chapter 55 - Chapter 4

I disembarked in the Haruka system. It was a planet called Akari. The locals were humans. The young were bold in their outfits but the adults were modestly dressed. They had red stones studded on their foreheads. I counted seven stones arranged in a semicircle. The center one is larger. The others on either side get smaller as it reaches the end. When the sunlight hits their face the freckles on their nose and cheeks start to glitter. Their eyes ranged from smokey to mahogany. The majority were red haired but a minority were brunettes. I saw street performers playing different instruments and trying different things. Protestors preaching about oppression and a few pickpockets too. The buildings were of different heights and each one was different from the other. Some were circular. Others had unusual angles. Some looked spiralized. There was one resembling sticks. One resembled a crumpled paper thrown vicariously. This city looked like someone was constantly using a strong psychedelic substance had designed it.

The pavement moved like a conveyor belt. One side went in one direction and the side went in the other direction. The traffic was divided into three sectors. The ground vehicles were to commute to and from work to home. The levitation vehicles were used for emergencies only. As in first responders in disasters and medical transportation. The sky train was used to transport people to and from the space port and the interplanetary commuter. The people spoke in either melodic, velvety or piercing voices. I was taken to the guesthouse via the sky train. The train was attached to a metal rod with the help of magnets. It snaked the skyline going in two different directions. The buildings nearby were used as support. The maglev train glided by the city center where I saw a huge building surrounded by different colored flags and statues facing away from it. They seemed to be on guard duty.

The guesthouse was helix shaped and made mostly from glass and metal. The tourists were permitted to stay in such places. The other places were the pleasure house and volunteer community. I was on board a pleasure barge once. And once is more than enough so I asked nicely where the volunteer community was since I was a licensed medic. The information bot gave me the general directions. I requested transportation. A few minutes later a drop service picked me up and transported me wherever the building was. It is a fully autonomous vehicle on two wheels. I asked for the scenic route so I appreciate and decompress from space travel and adjust to the local time zone. I got to see the city. Like I said. The architect was someone who was using some serious hallucinogens before he sat down to design the city. Two hours later I arrived at a building called the starlight union. It was a building resembling a crescent moon.

Some of the volunteers were there to repair medical bots. Some had basic knowledge of first aid. Others were uploading medical data. They stared curiously as I walked in. I walked in and the organizer asked me what my skill set was. I showed him my credentials. He was smiling as he asked me to go against a medic bot to see who is better. We were given two patients with identical symptoms. I diagnosed him and started to treat him. The bot scanned him and began treatment. I checked the pulse every so often and adjusted accordingly. My patient recovered faster. The organizer was shocked. The others were unimpressed so they wanted a rematch. Then a patient was brought here to stabilize so he could be fit for transportation. He was here because of a falling debris from a construction site lodged in his throat. The bot scanned him and said that he is not going to treat him since there is a great risk that he could die. The family started to cry. The programmers were embarrassed.

The organizer mentioned that no one wants to hire a bot that refuses to treat a patient. Probability based thinking is not something that is allowed in the medical field. Refusing patients is proof of arrogance and would automatically revoke the medic's license. I ignored the bot as I treated him. I used Quikclot to stop the bleeding and then checked his trachea. I made an incision just below the injury and stuck a breathing tube and then I tied off the damaged vein before checking muscular damage. I took care of him a step at a time. Once the bleeding stopped I used a test strip to check his blood type and got a match to begin the transfusion. An hour and a half later he was transferred to an actual medical facility. The organizer and a few locals gave me a round of applause as he was hauled out. The engineers were staring at me jealously. The family gave me a hug as tears of gratitude flowed down their faces. I asked if I could have a room for the night since I am going to catch the floatilla. I was hoping to be a volunteer.

I was given a room on the second floor. The view was decent. Nothing like Arcan during frost season or the Mist season in the third quarter of the year. Cabalistic is where I spent the most time in one place. The Yue architect had constructed it to look like it came directly from a children's book. With each passing season it would transform into a scenery straight from folklore. Children would ask their parents if their childhood heroes or villains would appear out of nowhere to start fighting. The response was usually laughter. The affluent district of Recondite was a feast for the senses. I have only been there once during Earth manipulation training. The few minutes roaming around the place made me feel like I didn't deserve to see it. The decorum here was dull by comparison. The room was small but functional with peeling and chipped paint. A small bed, a table and a rickety chair, a storage unit with a broken lock and tiny bathroom.

I took a shower and came down to have dinner. A few gave me dirty looks but they are just kids. In a few years they won't exist. I am not immortalizing them in my memory. The mayor came to ask me if I was serious about the floatilla. I simply nod my head between bites. The man stared for a few moments before he made up his mind and moved away. I looked up to see a plain clothed officer from Tenten. I almost set him on fire. But I was raised to be more considerate. So I decided to see if he was here for me or not. I walked back to my room and meditated. I flitted into his head and discovered he was here to see if I was the killer. So far he has only seen me as a medic. So far he has no proof only a theory. He was going to do something when a message came telling him to come back since the real killer was caught. He packed his belongings and walked out. I waited till he was away before using my technopath abilities to make contact with the general. He was pleased to hear the death of the crook. He spoke while I thought of the answer which the communicator converted to words and announced.

He made sure to send a fake message saying my family was in an accident so I have to return home immediately. I waited till it was evening before I called my supposed relative. She pretended to lose her composure as she explained how Gramsy was in an accident and I needed to come home immediately. I arranged transport and boarded the Aurora cruiser and they transported me back to Hae. The general was particularly interested in how I managed the task. I was as vague as possible. I mentioned how I made the security feed convert my image to a shadow. But I shorted the computer I took with me. Which is why replicating it will be difficult. He looked dejected. He passed it on that the officials of Tenten believe that Nox was still in the area. They are searching for her. He was hoping that I was Nox. But so far I have done ordinary things that any rational person can do. The discreet observe in Tenten confirmed my statement. She sent the forensics report and the general stormed off. He had such high hopes. Now that was dashed. So he was going to spend the rest of the day in the shooting range. I guess I will need hardcore ear protection. By the time he is finished half the base will visit the medical tent with hearing issues. I could talk to one of the special services divisions and go off world. I need to find Hyrax and he will handle the rest.
