Chapter 28 - Quiet Truths

Alan didn't speak as he drove.

Neither did Emily.

The silence between them felt heavier than the road itself, like something unspoken was sitting in every breath they didn't take.

Emily kept her eyes on the window, but her thoughts refused to settle.

Veins of Lanta.

Her father.

And the way the mayor had looked at her — not like someone revealing truth, but like someone studying a reaction.

That detail stayed with her.

Alan's hand tightened slightly on the steering wheel, then relaxed again.

He was aware.

Of everything.

But still, he said nothing.

Emily finally broke the silence.

"...Alan."

He glanced at her briefly.

"Yes?"

Her voice was careful.

"You were watching me back there."

A short pause.

Then Alan exhaled lightly.

"I was listening."

"That's not what I asked."

He didn't answer immediately.

That alone was enough.

Emily turned slightly toward him.

"You already knew, didn't you?"

Alan's jaw tightened.

The car continued moving.

"I knew parts," he admitted finally. "Not everything."

Emily leaned back slowly.

That answer didn't comfort her.

It only confirmed what she already suspected.

She wasn't being informed.

She was being measured.

The rest of the drive ended in silence.

When they arrived at the orphanage, Alan didn't get down immediately.

Emily hesitated before opening the door.

"Alan."

He looked at her.

This time, his expression was harder to read.

"Be careful," he said again.

Emily frowned slightly.

"That's all you keep saying."

Alan didn't respond.

After a moment, she stepped out.

And the car drove off behind her.

The orphanage felt unusually still that evening.

Even the laughter of the children sounded distant, like it didn't fully belong in the air anymore.

Emily sat with them for a while, forcing a smile, answering questions, pretending nothing had changed.

But her mind wasn't there.

It kept drifting.

To names.

To questions.

To things that didn't fit together yet.

Later, she walked alone toward the quieter side of the yard.

The same oak tree.

She sat beneath it again.

But peace didn't come this time.

Only thoughts.

Only weight.

Somewhere across the city, the mayor stood in his office.

The lights were dim.

Alan had already left hours ago.

A file sat open on his desk.

Old.

Marked.

Sealed and reopened more than once.

He stared at it for a long time before speaking.

"Has there been any confirmation?" he asked.

A voice from behind him answered.

"Not direct. But the pattern is increasing."

The mayor's fingers tapped lightly against the desk.

"And the girl?"

A pause.

"She is not reacting the way we expected."

That made him go quiet.

Finally, he leaned back slightly.

"So she is aware... but hiding it."

The man didn't answer.

But he didn't deny it either.

The mayor exhaled slowly.

"Watch her closely," he said at last.

"No pressure. No interference."

A pause.

Then softer:

"Just observation."

Back at the orphanage...

Emily's phone buzzed again.

She looked down.

Unknown number.

Her fingers paused for a second.

Then she opened it.

One line.

"They are watching you now."

Emily stared at it.

Longer this time.

No panic.

No reaction.

Just silence.

Then she locked her phone slowly.

And looked up at the night sky.

Something had changed.

Not loudly.

Not suddenly.

But enough for her to feel it.

Like a door had quietly begun to open...

And she was already standing too close to it.
