Louis Decazes, sitting quietly on the sofa waiting for the meeting to end, felt a sudden blankness in his mind upon hearing Jerome Bonaparte's appointment. Even Minister de Luyis, sitting beside him, showed a fleeting expression of surprise.

As per common sense, a task like this that could potentially affect diplomatic relations between two countries (although the France-Russia relations aren't quite good now either) should rightfully be assigned by the Emperor to a trusted member of the Imperial Family.

At the very least, a trusted minister should be appointed to ensure that the entire task poses no risk of leakage.

However, Jerome Bonaparte unexpectedly chose to appoint Louis Decazes to execute this task.

It's hard to say whether the Emperor values Louis Decazes greatly or intends for Louis Decazes to become a sacrificial pawn.
