Chapter 82 - Snowfall Over Yukihama

Winter arrived overnight.

Renji woke to silence—not the suffocating silence of frozen time or abandoned reflections, but the soft, peaceful quiet that only came with the season's first snow.

Outside his window, Yukihama had turned white.

Roofs, streets, trees, riverbanks—everything hidden beneath fresh snowfall that glittered under the pale morning light.

For the first time in years, winter didn't feel lonely.

The First Snow

At school, the atmosphere was lighter than usual. Students crowded near windows, excited murmurs filling the hallways.

Kuro arrived late, snow dusting his dark hair.

> "Trains were delayed," he complained, dropping into his seat.

"Apparently snow is society's greatest enemy."

Aoi laughed softly from beside Renji.

> "You say that every year."

> "And every year I'm right."

Renji watched them bicker quietly and felt something warm settle in his chest.

Once, he had believed moments like this were fragile things—temporary happiness waiting to be destroyed.

Now he understood something different.

Fragility didn't make moments meaningless.

It made them precious.

The Rooftop in Winter

At lunch, the three climbed to the rooftop as usual.

Snow covered the concrete in thin layers, crunching softly beneath their shoes. Their breath fogged the cold air.

The mirror still stood in its corner.

Snowflakes gathered gently across its frame.

Aoi brushed some away with her glove and stared at their reflection.

> "You know," she said quietly, "I used to hate winter."

Kuro raised an eyebrow. "Why?"

She smiled faintly.

> "Because everything felt dead."

"But now… it just feels like the world resting."

Renji looked out across the white-covered town.

Yukihama really did look asleep.

Not haunted.

Not broken.

Just resting.

A Small Tradition

That evening, Renji visited the bookstore where he worked part-time. Business was slow because of the snowstorm rolling in, so his manager let him close early.

When he stepped outside, he found Aoi and Kuro waiting beneath the streetlamp.

Kuro shoved a warm canned coffee into his hands.

> "Don't say I never do anything nice."

Aoi held up a small paper bag. "And I brought taiyaki."

Renji blinked. "Did we plan this?"

> "Nope," Kuro said. "Which somehow makes it worse."

They ended up wandering through the snowy streets together, stopping by vending machines, arguing over which convenience store had the best hot chocolate, and throwing snow at each other like children.

No spirals.

No monsters.

Just winter.

The Shrine Under Snow

Eventually, their steps carried them to the old shrine.

Snow rested thick across the stone steps and wooden railings. The world around it felt still and sacred.

Aoi stopped near the offering box.

Quietly, she placed three coins down.

One for Emiko.

One for Shiori.

One for every forgotten person swallowed by the Spiral.

Renji and Kuro did the same without speaking.

The wind moved softly through the trees overhead.

And for just a second—

The shrine bell rang on its own.

Not loudly.

Not ominously.

Just once.

Clear and gentle.

Like an answer.

Snowfall Without Fear

Later that night, Renji stood at his bedroom window watching snow drift beneath the streetlights.

The mirror in his room reflected nothing unusual.

Just him.

A tired boy growing into someone stronger.

He touched the glass lightly.

Once, reflections had terrified him.

Now they reminded him of something important:

> To look at yourself honestly… and still choose to keep living.

Outside, Yukihama slept beneath falling snow.

And inside that quiet winter night, Renji smiled.

Not because the pain was gone.

But because life had continued anyway.
