[Two minutes before the announcement]
High above the roaring stadium, tucked behind layers of reinforced glass and polished steel, the viewing box offered a perfect, almost detached perspective of the chaos below. From here, the duels looked smaller, cleaner, reduced to patterns of light, motion, and strategy rather than the explosive spectacle they truly were. Several instructors stood or sat in quiet focus, observing the ongoing matches with the practiced eyes of professionals.
At the center of it all, Chancellor Sheppard remained seated, posture relaxed, fingers loosely interlaced as he watched the arenas with calm interest, as if nothing unfolding below could truly surprise him.
Not far behind him, however, one teacher was clearly... less composed.
Slam!
Dr. Crowler's palms struck the glass hard enough to send a dull vibration through the panel. His face was twisted into a mixture of outrage and disbelief, his mustache practically quivering.
"Mamma mia…! How is that Slifer slacker this strong!?" he burst out, voice echoing sharply through the room.
A few of the other instructors glanced over, mildly startled, but Sheppard merely chuckled under his breath.
"Careful there, Crowler." he said lightly without even turning around. "At this rate, you might actually crack the glass."
Crowler stiffened, the anger on his face faltering as embarrassment crept in. "Ugh… Yes, Chancellor Sheppard…" he muttered, straightening his coat and stepping back with forced dignity, though his eyes still flicked downward toward the arena with clear irritation.
Sheppard rose from his seat at a leisurely pace and walked closer to the glass, hands folding neatly behind his back. His gaze settled on a single arena, his expression thoughtful.
"So..." he began casually, "what do you think of him?"
"Who?" Crowler blinked.
"Jaden Yuki," Sheppard clarified, tone almost amused. "The student you attempted to reject for arriving late to the entrance exam. The one you challenged using your personal deck… instead of the standard test deck." His lips curved faintly. "And lost to."
Crowler visibly deflated. His shoulders sank as if something heavy had just been placed on them.
"And then..." Sheppard continued, his voice carrying a soft, knowing edge, "it happened twice."
"I get it, alright!?" Crowler snapped, spinning around with a flushed face, his composure cracking again despite his efforts.
"Ha ha ha!" Sheppard let out a warm laugh, clearly entertained. "Ah, no need to be so defensive. I'm simply asking, what do you think of him now?"
Crowler hesitated this time. His gaze drifted back to the arena, where Jaden last dueled against Snazz. When he finally spoke, his tone had lost its earlier arrogance, replaced by reluctant acknowledgment.
"Being able to summon multiple high-attack monsters in a single turn… achieving what is essentially a one-turn kill by Turn Two… and coordinating that many effects and combos without hesitation…" He exhaled slowly. "It's… absurd."
"Indeed." Sheppard agreed with a small nod.
"In fact, I believe Jaden Yuki doesn't merely deserve a promotion to Ra Yellow."
He paused just long enough for Crowler to glance at him in confusion before continuing, "No… he is the first student in Duel Academy history worthy of a double promotion. Straight to Obelisk Blue!"
"HUH!? Wha—wha—uhhh—" Crowler's brain visibly short-circuited.
His mouth opened, closed, then opened again as if trying to assemble a rebuttal, but nothing came out. His pride clearly wanted to protest… but the image of that duel still lingered too vividly in his mind. In the end, he could only stand there, stunned into silence, unable to argue with the fact.
Sheppard laughed again, clearly pleased. "Ahahaha! Truly inspiring, isn't it? This new generation of duelists…" He turned slightly, his gaze shifting toward the darker corner of the room.
"…quite wonderful, don't you think?"
From the shadows at the back of the viewing box, a man stepped just enough into the light for his presence to be felt, though not fully revealed. His arms were crossed, posture rigid, his voice flat and unimpressed.
"Hmph. How boring." His eyes remained fixed on the arena, cold and critical. "You said there would be a student here who would pique my interest. Was that it?" His tone sharpened slightly. "I'm a busy man, Sheppard. I don't appreciate having my time wasted."
Sheppard didn't seem offended in the slightest. If anything, his smile deepened. "Well, while Jaden is certainly one of our finest… I assure you, the next one will be far more… intriguing."
Almost on cue, a low electrical hum rolled through the stadium, followed by the familiar crackle of the announcement system.
"Krsssk—In Arena Number Three… Justin Mash… versus… Chazz Princeton."
"Oh ho…?" Sheppard's eyebrow lifted in mild surprise, though the glint in his eyes suggested something closer to amusement.
"And just when things were settling down." He slowly turned his head toward Crowler. "It seems someone has been… scheming behind my back?"
Crowler froze mid-step, caught like a child with his hand in the cookie jar. A bead of sweat slid down his temple as he forced a stiff, awkward laugh.
"Ah—uh—it seems I… may need to go explain a few things! Yes! Important matters!" he rambled, already inching toward the door.
Before Sheppard could say another word, Crowler spun on his heel and bolted from the room with surprising speed.
Meanwhile, the man in the shadows let out a quiet scoff. "An Obelisk dueling a Slifer..." he said dismissively.
"And this is what you consider noteworthy? Your 'chosen one' is facing a Red?"
"Ha ha ha ha... Nope." Sheppard let out a soft chuckle, shaking his head. "Actually… it's quite the opposite, sir."
He turned back toward the glass, eyes gleaming with interest. "The 'special' one is the Slifer. And he's the one dueling the Obelisk."
A brief silence followed. Then, almost imperceptibly, the man's eyes narrowed.
"…Did you plan for this?" he asked.
"Of course not." Sheppard replied easily, lifting his hands in a mild shrug. "I was just as surprised as you when I heard the announcement. But now…" His gaze locked onto Arena Three below. "…let's simply watch how this unfolds. I trust you're comfortable..."
The man finally stepped fully into the light.
Tall, composed, and radiating quiet authority, he wore a long white sleeveless coat bearing the unmistakable design of KaibaCorp. Sharp shoulders, a high studded collar, black sleeves beneath, and matching dark attire that contrasted starkly with the pristine white coat. His presence alone seemed to shift the atmosphere of the room, as if the air itself had grown heavier.
"Sir Seto Kaiba."
Seto Kaiba's eyes, cold and piercing, fixed themselves on the arena below.
"Let's hope." he said flatly, "he's worth it."
[Back down at the Arena...]
Arena Number Three felt different.
Maybe it was the lighting, just a little harsher under the dome. Maybe it was the crowd, louder, sharper, like they could already smell something big about to happen. Or maybe it was simply the two duelists standing at the center of it all.
Mash stood with his usual lazy posture, arms crossed, a smug grin plastered across his face like he had already seen the ending of this match and found it amusing. Across from him, Chazz Princeton stood rigid and focused, shoulders squared, eyes locked in with a cold intensity that didn't match his usual arrogance. This wasn't the same guy who looked down on Slifers for fun, this was someone bracing himself for a boss fight.
Up in the spectator stands, tension was already building.
"Jay… who do you think's gonna win?" Syrus asked, leaning forward with nervous energy, fingers gripping the edge of his seat.
Jaden didn't even look away from the arena, casually tossing a handful of popcorn into his mouth. "Obviously Mash will win!" he said through a crunch, completely unbothered. "No way he's losing this one."
"I agree," Bastion added. "Given his… rather aggressive 'hunting' of Obelisk Blue students lately, the statistical likelihood of his defeat is quite low. Not to mention the sheer power of his deck for a 'Trap based' deck..."
Alexis remained silent for a moment, arms folded as her eyes narrowed slightly at Chazz's stance.
"Well… it could go either way." she said at last. "Look at Chazz over there. That's not his usual arrogant expression he usually have everyday. He's definitely got something planned… something he thinks that can actually win him this duel."
The boys paused, glancing at each other, then back at the arena.
"Or Mash just wipes the floor with him again like last time." Alexis added dryly a second later
Bastion blinked. "I'm sorry, what?"
Down on the field, Mash squinted slightly, studying Chazz more carefully now. The guy wasn't posturing. He wasn't sneering. If anything, he looked… composed.
[What's with him…?] Mash's grin thinned just a bit. [This isn't his usual 'I'm better than you' attitude.]
"Well, well, well."
The moment stretched then shattered as a familiar voice cut through the tension. Dr. Crowler strode dramatically into the center of the arena, coat flaring behind him as he struck an exaggerated pose like he had just stepped onto a stage.
"Oh, Justin, you-"
"Please, Just call me Mash." Mash cut in flatly without even looking at him. "'Justin' sounds kinda gay."
Crowler's eye twitched violently.
"Ahem! Yes, Mash, then." He cleared his throat, trying to recover what little dignity remained. "You must be wondering why you've been paired with an Obelisk Blue student for this exam. Well you see, you are-"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah." Mash interrupted again, "I get it, with my higher than average skill (and deck). No one is Slifer Red is a balanced match for me, and since I've been hunting so much of your precious Obelisk Blue so much. You decided to pit me with the 'top dog' of Obelisk blue, isn't that right?"
Crowler sputtered, clearly not expecting to be summarized so bluntly. "Ugh… w-well, when you put it that way-"
"Cool, cool, great speech." Mash cut in again, already losing interest. He jerked his thumb toward Chazz. "So can we start already? Pretty sure this guy's just as done listening as I am."
Crowler glanced over his shoulder right into Chazz's cold glare and immediately flinched at the sheer intensity behind it.
"Urgh! Fine! Have it your way!" he snapped, throwing his hands up before storming off the field in a huff.
With the interruption gone, silence settled again, heavier this time.
Mash and Chazz faced each other.
"You're looking pretty different, Chazz…" Mash tilted his head slightly with a smug expression. "Not looking down on me this time, huh? Unlike when we first met?"
Chazz's eyes narrowed, something sharp flickering behind them.
"Oh… I will," he said quietly, raising his Duel Disk into position. "After I trample you."
Mash's grin widened. "Ha! As if you could. Especially when you're dealing with me and..."
He paused.
Looked to his left.
Then to his right.
"…Sigh. LOVELY!!!"
Up in the stands, Lovely Labrynth was currently nowhere near the duel because she and Mindy were far too busy fussing over a very unwilling Jasmine.
"Hold still, Jassy~!" Lovely chirped, happily dabbing powder onto Jasmine's cheeks.
"I said let go of me!" Jasmine struggled, trying to pull away. "Why are you even doing this!?"
"Because if Jassy is looking good~ Maybe some boys would start to flock to you and be you boyfriend~!" Lovely explained. "With a boyfriend, Jassy will surely be happy~!"
"Ha ha ha!" Mindy gave an enthusiastic thumbs-up. "Looking good~!"
"LOVELYYYYY!!!"
"HEY!" Jasmine snapped, twisting her head toward Lovely. "I know your makeup might be amazing, but your boyfriend is literally yelling for you from the arena!"
Lovely froze. "…Eh~!?"
She turned, spotting Mash below, and immediately tossed her makeup kit aside like it had never mattered. "Oh! Alright, Darling~! I'm coming~!"
With a light "Hup~!" she leapt high and clean over the spectator seat towards arena 3.
Gasps rippled through the crowd as she descended gracefully, her form cutting through the air like a swan before landing neatly beside Mash without so much as a stumble.
"Sorry, Darling~" she said sweetly, brushing imaginary dust off herself.
Mash smiled faintly. "It's fine, Lovely."
Chazz's expression soured instantly at her arrival. But the moment their eyes met, Lovely's grin stretched into something far more mischievous.
"Ohohoho~! The brat wants a rematch~?" she teased, tilting her head. "My, my… how big is your pride, really? Oh, I know~ It must be as big as your mother~!"
The moment she arrived, the crowd exploded in reaction.
"Look, look! It's Lovely Labrynth!"
"She's got so much sass!"
"I LOVE YOU LOVELY LABRYNTH!!!"
Chazz clicked his tongue in visible disgust at the noise. "Tch."
"Ohohoho~!" Lovely twirled a strand of her hair, clearly enjoying herself. "Aww~ is someone upset I'm stealing the spotlight?"
"Alright, enough," Mash stepped forward, cutting through the chaos before it could spiral further. "How about we actually start this duel? I'LL GO FIRST—"
"No." Chazz interrupted, but he was smirking now.
"We'll let fate decide." He pulled a coin from his pocket, holding it up between two fingers.
Mash's expression instantly shifted.
[Oh no... My one and only weakness... LUCK!]
"Heads." Chazz declared.
"Head- ugh, goddangit. Alright. Tails."
Chazz flipped the coin.
It spun high into the air, glinting under the stadium lights as time seemed to stretch just a little longer than it should. Then it dropped, hit the ground with a sharp clink, and settled.
Heads.
"Dangit!" Mash groaned, dragging a hand down his face before immediately pointing accusingly up at the stands. "This is your fault, Jaden!"
From the stands, Jaden blinked and pointed at himself. "What did I do!?"
Chazz casually pocketed the coin, his smirk returning in full force. "Looks like I'm going first," he said, voice edged with satisfaction. "Scared?"
Mash exhaled slowly, rolling his shoulders as he tried to steady himself. "No. Of course not."
[FUCK.]
Chazz raised his Duel Disk. "Good. Then let's begin."
"Good luck, Darling~!" Lovely called, her form already dissolving into shimmering particles as Mash calmly slid her card into his deck.
Mash smirked again, confidence snapping back into place like a switch flipping.
"Don't worry," he muttered. "I never needed it anyway."
"DUEL!" they both shouted.
{Chazz LP: 4000 | Mash LP: 4000}
"It won't be as easy as last time, Mash. Draw!" Chazz declared, snapping a card from his deck with a practiced motion.
His eyes flicked over it for barely a second before a sharp grin tugged at his lips, confidence bleeding back into his posture.
"Looks like I got lucky today… As I just drew one of the rare cards in my deck! Go on and feast your eyes on {Magical Mallet}!" The Spell Card materialized in front of him.
Up in the stands, Bastion leaned forward, eyes widening in genuine surprise. "That card… it was part of the showcase card of the newest booster pack released."
"Wait, seriously!?" Syrus nearly yelped. "Didn't all those packs get bought out by some mysterious student!? Then how did Chazz even get one!?"
Down below, Chazz didn't bother answering—he simply selected three cards from his hand and slid them back into his deck with a smooth motion before drawing three fresh ones.
His expression tightened slightly as he scanned them. [Not here… tch. Still, this'll do.]
"Heh! Now, I'll use this {Pot of Greed} to draw two cards from my deck!" he continued, immediately following up.
Mash let out a sigh, "...how fuckin' lucky."
Chazz ignored him, now holding a full hand as his gaze sharpened. For a brief moment, something like irritation flickered across his face. [Still not here…] His fingers tapped once against his cards before he made his next move.
"Fine! Then I'll start setting up the field." He thrust a card in the slot. "I summon {V-Tiger Jet}! Now sharped you claws in attack mode!"
With a metallic roar, a blue-and-yellow tiger-shaped jet materialized on the field, its engines flaring as it crouched low like a predator ready to pounce.
{V-Tiger Jet|4 Star|Light|Machine/Normal|ATK: 1600 DEF:1800}
"And now check this out!" Chazz continued, sliding another card into place. "I activate the Spell Card {Frontline Base}! This lets me Special Summon another Level 4 or lower monster from my hand. So come on out {W-Wing Catapult}!"
A sleek twin-barreled aircraft shimmered into existence beside the tiger jet, hovering steadily with a mechanical hum.
{W-Wing Catapult|4 Star|Light|Machine/Union Effect|ATK: 1300 DEF: 1500}
Mash raised an eyebrow, watching the familiar setup come together. [So... it's the exact same opening as is from the anime. What a lazy author.]
"Now then," Chazz said, voice rising with confidence as he spread his arms wide, "with these two machines on the field… I can combine them!"
Both machines surged upward at once, engines screaming as they ascended into the air before colliding in a blinding flash of light.
"Come forth…! {VW-Tiger Catapult}!"
The light cleared, revealing a massive fusion machine part jet, and part artillery platform. It hovered on the field with overwhelming presence.
{VW-Tiger Catapult|6 Star|Light|Machine/Fusion| ATK: 2000 DEF: 2100}
Chazz smirked, clearly pleased with himself as he slid one final card face-down. "Finally I'll set one card… and end my turn!"
{Chazz Hands: 3 | Chazz fields: 1 Set, 1 Continous, 1 Monster.}
Mash rolled his shoulders, stepping forward slightly. "Alright then… my turn."
"Draw!" He drew his card with a casual flick, then glanced over his hand, which is:
{Mirror Force}, {Waboku}, {Magical Cylinder}, {Arias the Labrynth Servant}, {Lady Labrynth of the Silver Castle} and {Lovely Labrynth of the Silver Castle}.
[The trap cards could be a bit better… But at least I am able to do this.] Mash grinned as he revealed one of them with flair.
"I'll start things off by activating the effect of {Arias the Labrynth Servant} from my hand!" He revealed the card with a flourish. "By sending her to the Graveyard, I can Special Summon a 'Labrynth' monster straight from my hand!"
his grin sharpened, "And you probably already know who's coming out, right?"
Chazz's expression darkened. "Tch…"
A towering silver door materialized behind Mash, ornate and imposing, its surface gleaming under the stadium lights. Arias appeared beside it, bowing slightly before pulling it open. From within, an elegant figure stepped forward with regal poise, her presence immediately dominating the field.
"O HO HO HO HO HO HO~! Lovely Labrynth has arrived on the battlefield~!"
{Lovely Labrynth of the Silver Castle|8 Star|Dark|Fiend/Effect| ATK: 2900 DEF: 1900}
"Whoa!? she's already out!?" Jaden leaned forward, nearly spilling his popcorn.
"That was fast…" Alexis muttered, eyes narrowing slightly.
"I'm… really jealous of Mash deck." Bastion admitted under his breath. "Being able to summon that 2900 ATK monster with that level of ease…"
"Reminds me of my brother's plays…" Syrus added quietly.
"Oh, I'm not done yet," Mash said, clearly enjoying himself now. "Since a Labrynth effect just activated, I can Special Summon {Lady Labrynth of the Silver Castle} from my hand in Defense Mode!"
Another silver door creaked open beside the first, and from it emerged Lady Labrynth, crouched low with twin blades crossed before her, her presence cold and dangerous.
"Hey there, other me~!" Lovely waved at her other self with a playful grin.
{Lady Labrynth of the Silver Castle|8 Star|Dark|Fiend/effect|ATK: 3000 DEF: 2900}
Chazz instinctively took half a step back, his confidence wavering as the field shifted dramatically against him. Two high-level monsters... just like that.
Mash didn't give him time to recover. He pointed forward sharply. "Alright, let's get violent. Lovely, go! Attack that oversized mechanical cat!"
"With pleasure~!" Lovely purred, already moving.
She surged forward, her massive axe spinning as she leapt into the air, bringing it down with lethal grace. "Take this!"
"Not so fast!" Chazz smirked, slamming his set card open. "I'll activate a trap card! {Magical Cylinder}!"
"FUCK!" Mash barked instantly.
"AWAWAWAWA~!!! I can't stop it~!" Lovely shrieked mid-swing.
A magical cylinder materialized in front of VW-Tiger Catapult, absorbing the full force of her strike. For a split second, everything went silent then the attack reversed, blasting straight back toward Mash in a violent surge of light.
{Mash LP: 4000 -> 1100}
The impact forced Mash to stagger back a step, the force of his own attack slamming into him.
Chazz laughed sharply, confidence snapping back into place. "Ha! How does it feel being on the receiving end for once!?"
"Sorry, Darling~!" Lovely called out, wincing slightly.
Mash steadied himself, exhaling as he rolled his shoulder. "Tch… yeah, that hurt." Then he smirked again. "But you just triggered one of my monster effect! Since you activated a Trap Card, Lady Labrynth lets me set any Normal Trap directly from my deck."
He slid a card into place with a snap. "I'll set {Big Welcome Labrynth}."
"Tch." Chazz narrowed his eyes slightly. "More traps…"
"Yep," Mash said casually, already setting the rest of his hand face-down one after another. "I'll set three more… and end my turn."
{Mash hands: 0 Cards | Mash field: 4 set cards, 2 monsters}
Across the field, Chazz narrowed his eyes and drew with a sharp, almost aggressive motion. "My turn… Draw!" The card slid into his hand, and for a brief moment his expression soured.
"Tch. Not what I needed… but it's enough. I still have a chance." His gaze lifted, sharp and certain. "I activate {Cup of Ace}!"
Mash's eyes widened. "WHY WOULD YOU HAVE THAT!?"
"Normally? I wouldn't, because it's too risky." Chazz replied coolly, already placing the Spell onto his Duel Disk. "But against you? I think luck's on my side when dueling you."
"…bitch," Mash muttered under his breath, jaw tightening.
Chazz casually flicked a coin into the air, the same one from earlier, letting it spin high above them, catching the stadium lights as it flipped again and again. "Cup of Ace has a simple effect. Heads, I draw two. Tails… you draw two."
The coin spins midair, glinting as it spun and finally landed on… you guess it, heads.
"HAHA! Better luck next time, Mash!" Jaden called from the stands, leaning over his seat with way too much enthusiasm.
"Kys, Jay."
Chazz didn't even acknowledge them. His hand hovered over his deck now, fingers trembling ever so slightly not from fear, but anticipation. [Please… just give me that one single card...!]
He drew.
And the moment his eyes met what he pulled, everything changed.
A slow, dangerous grin stretched across his face.
[I got it!]
Mash felt it instantly. That shift. That smug, suffocating confidence creeping back in. His eyes narrowed, instincts screaming as something cold crawled up his spine. Beside him, Lovely stiffened, her playful expression vanishing.
"Darling~!" she called sharply.
"Yeah, I know!" Mash fired back without hesitation, already moving. "I activate my Trap Card, {Big Welcome Labrynth}! It lets me Special Summon a Labrynth monster from my deck, hand, or graveyard, then bounce one I control back to my hand. So I'll bring out another Lady in Attack Position and return the one on the field!"
A silver door exploded open behind him, ornate and imposing, and from within stepped another {Lady Labrynth of the Silver Castle}, blades gleaming as she took her place. At the same time, the first dissolved into shimmering particles, returning neatly to Mash's hand.
"And since a monster left my field because of a Trap effect…" Mash continued, pointing forward, his grin sharp again despite the tension, "Lovely's effect activates! And it allows me to destroy one card on your field or in your hand!"
His eyes locked onto Chazz. "You already know the drill, Lovely."
"Ohohoho~ now this is going to be fun~" Lovely hummed, already stepping forward.
She didn't rush. She strolled.
Each step was slow, deliberate, almost theatrical as she walked straight past the towering fusion monster like it didn't even exist, her attention fixed entirely on Chazz himself. The stadium buzzed immediately, whispers spreading like wildfire.
"Look, look—it's that walk!"
"She's doing it again!"
"They say she reads your expressions to find your most important card!"
"No, no, it's worse than that! I heard she can see straight into your soul! My cousin swears she sniped his {Heavy Storm} through a perfect poker face!"
Mash couldn't help but snort, because they all are WRONG!
[Fools. That was so old-school, reading your expression and stuff. Lovely's now has leveled up, she can now just see through the the cards by the literal reflections IN YOUR EYES!]
Lovely stopped right in front of Chazz, her gaze lowering toward the cards in his hand. Chazz, for his part, didn't flinch. He simply raised his hand, presenting the backs of his cards calmly, as if inviting her to try.
Lovely leaned in slightly. "Ho ho ho~ Let's see what card you drew-"
Then paused.
And her expression shifted to horror.
"Darling…" she called, a hint of uncertainty slipping into her voice.
Mash blinked. "Hm? What's wrong, Lo—" He stopped mid-sentence, eyes widening as realization hit him like a truck.
Chazz... had simply closed his eyes.
"Hmph!" Chazz scoffed, arms steady, cards still held out. "I know that you're able to detect even the finest subtle hint of micro-expression in a person's poker face. So to counter that… I decided to let fate decide and just not look."
Mash nearly screamed. [That's technically not how it works… but it works both ways for our strategy! which makes it worse!]
"Crap!"
Lovely hesitated, genuinely uncertain for once. "Darling… which one should I pick~?"
Mash panicked. "Pick the middle one- WAIT, NO!"
Too late.
Lovely had already plucked the middle card from Chazz's hand, crushing it into silver dust without hesitation.
It was {X-Head Cannon}.
She spun lightly on her heel, retreating back to Mash's side with a sheepish laugh. "SORRY DARLINGGG~!!"
Chazz's eyes slowly opened.
He glanced down at the remaining cards in his hand, he smirked and then he started laughing. Not the usual smug chuckle, but something louder, sharper, almost manic.
"Hehehe…" It bubbled out before erupting fully. "HAHAHAHAHA! THIS DUEL IS MINE, MASH!"
Mash didn't laugh.
Didn't speak.
Didn't even blink.
Only one word echoed through his mind, loud and clear.
[Fuck.]
