Cherreads

Chapter 80 - The Final Stage

The cheers still echoed in Renji's ears long after the gym had emptied.

Seiwa High had done the impossible.

They had defeated Arakawa Prep.

They had survived Nao Yamasaki.

And now—

They were heading to the State Finals.

But victory didn't feel loud anymore.

It felt… heavy.

---

The Quiet After the Storm

The locker room was unusually calm.

No shouting.

No celebrations.

Just exhausted breathing and the sound of tape being peeled from sore fingers.

Yuuto sat with an ice pack strapped to his wrist, staring silently at the floor.

Arai leaned against the wall, completely drained.

Kenta had fallen asleep sitting upright on the bench.

Renji sat in the center of it all, elbows on his knees.

His body hurt everywhere.

But what exhausted him most wasn't the match.

It was the realization that one final challenge remained.

The strongest team in the prefecture.

---

Watching From Above

Coach Sato walked into the room carrying a tablet.

"They were here," he said simply.

Everyone looked up.

"The finalists from the other bracket. They watched your entire match."

Yuuto let out a tired laugh. "Great. So they already know all our weaknesses."

Coach shook his head. "No. They know your strengths."

He placed the tablet down.

On the screen was a single image—

A team in dark blue uniforms standing silently in the arena stands.

Shiratori Academy.

Three-time state finalists.

Known across the prefecture as The Perfect Team.

And standing at the front—

Their captain.

Riku Hayama.

---

The Monster Waiting Ahead

"He's insane," Arai muttered after watching the footage.

Riku Hayama moved with terrifying efficiency.

No wasted movement.

No emotional reactions.

Every spike landed exactly where defenders weren't.

Every serve looked effortless.

And worst of all—

The entire team moved around him perfectly.

"They don't panic," Asuka said quietly. "Even under pressure."

Coach nodded. "Because they've been here before. Multiple times."

Yuuto leaned back against the locker. "So basically, we're fighting a machine again."

Renji's eyes stayed on the screen.

"No," he murmured.

Everyone looked at him.

"They're not like Arakawa."

Riku's eyes in the footage were calm—but not cold like Nao's.

There was something else there.

Confidence.

The kind built from never losing.

---

An Unexpected Visitor

As the team prepared to leave, someone knocked lightly on the locker room door.

Renji looked up.

Nao Yamasaki stood there.

The room went still.

Yuuto raised an eyebrow. "Didn't expect to see you again this soon."

Nao ignored him, eyes fixed on Renji.

"You'll lose if you play Shiratori the same way you played us."

Straight to the point.

Classic Nao.

Coach Sato crossed his arms but said nothing.

Renji stood slowly. "Why are you telling me this?"

Nao looked away briefly before answering.

"Because I want the team that beat us to go all the way."

Silence.

Then Nao added quietly:

"Hayama doesn't just control the game. He controls people. If you hesitate against him even once… he'll own the court."

Renji absorbed every word.

Nao turned toward the door.

But before leaving, he paused.

"You were right," he said without looking back. "Strength isn't silence."

Then he walked away.

---

Late Night Resolve

That night, Renji couldn't sleep again.

He stood alone in the dark gym, holding a volleyball beneath the faint glow of emergency lights.

His reflection stared back at him from the polished floor.

The shy first-year who could barely speak during practice felt impossibly far away now.

But fear?

Fear was still there.

The difference was—

He no longer ran from it.

The gym doors creaked open softly.

Asuka stepped inside carrying two warm cans of coffee.

"Knew I'd find you here," she said gently.

Renji accepted one with a tired smile.

"You ever think about how crazy this is?" he asked quietly. "A year ago, I could barely talk to anyone."

Asuka smiled softly. "And now you're leading a team into the state finals."

He laughed weakly. "That sounds terrifying when you say it out loud."

She stepped beside him, shoulder brushing his.

"You don't have to carry it alone."

Renji looked down at the ball in his hands.

"I know."

And for the first time all day—

He truly meant it.

---

The Final Opponent

The next morning, the finals schedule was posted across the arena.

Students crowded around the board.

Phones flashed.

Whispers spread.

At the very top:

STATE FINALS

Seiwa High vs Shiratori Academy

The entire prefecture would be watching.

And standing on the other side of the net would be the strongest team they had ever faced.

Yuuto cracked his neck slowly as he read the schedule.

Arai grinned nervously.

Kenta swallowed hard.

Coach Sato folded his arms.

But Renji?

He stared at the words for a long moment.

Then smiled faintly.

Not because he thought it would be easy.

But because deep down—

He wanted this challenge.
