Chapter 21 - 21) The Floating Hope

The sea remained a vast, shimmering mirror of glass, its rhythmic pulse against the shore the only sound in the morning stillness. Lucious paced the waterline, his eyes scanning the debris left behind by the receding tide. It was then that he saw it—a tangled, translucent mess half-buried in the wet sand. He reached down and pulled, unearthing a heavy-duty fishing line that had been abandoned to the elements.

Lucious felt a surge of triumph. He found a weathered piece of driftwood and began the methodical process of rolling the line onto it, careful not to let it knot. This wasn't just string; it was a lifeline. The line was incredibly long, capable of reaching 300 meters into the deep blue. Attached to its end was a medium-sized hook, rusted but sharp, and strong enough to haul in a 2\text{ to }3\text{ kg} fish. For a man living off the land, this was the difference between hunger and a feast.

The beach environment was comforting that evening. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of salt and pine from the nearby treeline. Hero, his loyal dog, trotted happily along the dunes, his ears perked at every rustle in the grass. Lucious felt a rare moment of peace as he prepared for the night. He had a simple net to sleep in, but his mind was already moving toward the future.

"We can't stay here forever, Hero," Lucious whispered into the darkening air. They had to leave this temporary sanctuary and find the **Solvania Empire**. Stories spoke of Solvania as a bastion of civilization and safety, a place far more secure than the wild, open territory they currently navigated.

Returning to his camp, Lucious checked on his materials. Beside his hammock lay twenty-five thick bamboo stalks, the skeleton of the craft that would carry them away. He climbed into his hammock, and Hero curled up on the bamboo pile below him. Under a blanket of brilliant stars, Lucious drifted into a heavy sleep within seconds.

The next morning arrived with a pale gold light that danced across the calm shore. Today was the day for structural progress. While the bamboo provided the frame, Lucious knew the raft needed more buoyancy to be truly seaworthy. He needed floating objects—something to act as outriggers or pontoons to keep the craft stable in the swells.

"Come on, Hero! Let's go hunting," he called out.

They set off in a straight line along the coast. For hours, they found nothing but sea glass and broken shells. The sun climbed higher, and the heat began to shimmer off the sand, but Lucious refused to turn back. Finally, in the distance, the silhouette of a small boat appeared, bobbing near the shore.

Lucious's heart hammered in his chest. He rushed toward the vessel, his feet kicking up spray. As he drew closer, he saw a young man on the boat, looking around with a confused expression.

"Hi! I'm Lucious!" he shouted, waving his arms to signal his peaceful intentions.

The young man jumped slightly, startled by the sudden appearance of a man and a dog in such a remote area. He watched as Lucious stopped about ten meters away, giving the stranger space. The young man climbed out of the boat, his boots sinking into the soft sand.

"I'm Jack," the man replied, his voice cautious but friendly. "I'm a local fisherman. I catch fish out there and sell them to the villagers further inland. What are you doing out here in the middle of nowhere?"

"We're on an adventure," Lucious said, his eyes bright with determination. "We're traveling straight to the Solvania Empire. I've started building a raft out of bamboo, but I need floating objects to make it stable enough for the crossing."

Jack looked at the dog, then back at Lucious, his eyes widening in shock. "The Solvania Empire? That's a hell of a journey for a homemade raft. You've got spirit, I'll give you that."

Jack paused, looking at his own boat and then back at the determined traveler. "Listen, I think I can help you out. I like the idea of someone actually making it to the Empire."

Jack turned and tied his boat securely to a large, half-buried stone on the beach. "Follow me. I live nearby, and I've got some gear that might be exactly what you're looking for."

Lucious and Hero followed Jack over a low ridge of dunes to a small, sturdy hut. It was a humble place, built to withstand the coastal winds. Jack led them inside, where the air was thick with the smell of dried salt and cured fish.

"This is my storage place," Jack explained, gesturing to the racks of equipment. "When I have a big catch, I bring the fish here to sort them before I take them to the markets."

He walked to the back of the hut, rummaging through a pile of supplies. After a moment, he emerged, grinning, as he hauled out two massive, empty plastic water cans. They were heavy-duty and airtight.

"Tie these to the sides of your bamboo frame," Jack advised. "They'll give you the displacement you need to keep your head above water, even if the sea gets choppy. Consider it a gift for a fellow traveler."

Lucious took the cans, feeling the weight of the opportunity. With Jack's help and these new floats, the dream of Solvania wasn't just a fantasy anymore—it was a plan. The journey ahead was still long and dangerous, but for the first time, Lucious felt like the ocean was no longer an obstacle, but a path.
