Chapter 40 - Madness in the Making

Madness in the Making

With Drake defeated and his network shattered, Gerard turns his attention to the rest of Horizon's operations. But the system's hunger grows more demanding, pushing Gerard toward a darkness he can barely contain. And while Gerard fights to maintain his own mind, Meiying's schemes continue to take root.

---

03:00 – The Abandoned Hotel – Picking Through the Wreckage

The air was thick with the stench of blood and decay. The abandoned hotel lay in ruin, its upper floors sagging under the weight of their own destruction.

Gerard sifted through the scattered documents and devices left behind by Drake's men, his movements mechanical, his focus razor-sharp. The cold of the night had settled into his bones, but he ignored it.

Jian rummaged through the bodies with gleeful enthusiasm, his blood-slicked knife spinning between his fingers. "You know, boss, if we keep up this pace, we'll paint the entire city red by the end of the week."

Gerard didn't respond. His mind was too busy piecing together the information Drake had given him. Horizon was larger than he expected. More deeply rooted.

The system's new ability, Fear Manipulation, itched beneath his skin, begging to be unleashed. But he held it back. Controlled it.

---

[Ding! System Notification – Embrace Your Power]

- The system requires use of the Fear Manipulation ability.

- Suppressing your abilities may result in degradation of combat effectiveness.

- Fear is your ally. Use it. Control them all.

---

Gerard clenched his jaw, a low growl rumbling from his throat. The system's demands were growing more frequent, more invasive. The pressure was like a vise tightening around his skull.

But he would not be controlled. Not by anyone. Not even the damn system.

---

03:30 – The Road Back – Silent Battle

The drive away from the hotel was a silent one. The city lights flickered in the distance, their glow muted by the early morning fog.

Gerard's fingers drummed against the steering wheel, his thoughts a tangled mess of rage and calculation.

Jian sat beside him, cleaning blood from his knives with slow, deliberate strokes. "You know, you've been a lot more... driven lately. More fun, too."

Gerard's eyes narrowed. "What's your point?"

Jian shrugged, his grin casual. "Just saying. Whatever's gotten into you? I like it."

The words dug into Gerard's mind like hooks. Was he changing? Losing control to the system's influence?

He gripped the wheel harder, his knuckles turning white. "I'm still me. That's all you need to worry about."

Jian's chuckle was a lazy, amused thing. "Whatever you say, boss."

But the doubt lingered. And the system's demands only grew louder.

04:00 – Wei Estate – The Twisting Knife

Meiying's hands trembled as she entered the data Gerard had requested. Her eyes burned from lack of sleep, her mind swirling with plans she barely understood.

The constant threats from Gerard were grating at her nerves, his demands increasing with each message. The man had become something else. Something monstrous.

But her mother's rage was an even greater terror. If Madam Wei found out what Meiying was doing... death would be a mercy.

She finished compiling the files, her breathing ragged. Her hatred for Gerard burned bright, a searing rage that threatened to consume her.

---

[Ding! Mission Progress: Seeds of Betrayal]

- New information acquired from Meiying.

- Her loyalty remains uncertain.

- Next Step: Destroy key assets within Madam Wei's empire.

- Reward: $1,000,000 + New Ability: Digital Phantom – Increased proficiency in technological manipulation and hacking.

---

Meiying's phone vibrated with a new message from Gerard:

"If you're lying to me, I'll know. And if that happens, you'll wish your mother had killed you first."

Her hands trembled with equal parts fear and fury.

One day, she would make him pay. One day, she would tear him down just as ruthlessly as he had torn her life apart.

04:30 – Gerard's Hideout – The Growing Influence

The hideout was dimly lit, the curtains drawn against the encroaching daylight. Papers and maps littered the room, each one marked with notes scrawled in Gerard's sharp, precise handwriting.

He sat hunched over the table, his eyes red-rimmed and bloodshot from lack of sleep. His thoughts drifted, twisting into dark, endless spirals.

The system's voice was a constant hum, its words like acid pouring into his ears.

---

[Ding! System Notification – Submission or Suffering]

- Your refusal to embrace the system's power weakens you.

- Use your abilities. Spill blood. Sow fear.

- Mercy is weakness. Mercy will destroy you.

---

Gerard's fists clenched. His breathing came in ragged bursts.

"I'm not your damn puppet."

The words spilled from his lips, venomous and defiant. But the truth clawed at him.

The system was right. He had been holding back. Trying to maintain some semblance of control. But at what cost?

He rose from his chair, his body trembling with barely-contained rage. His eyes moved over the scattered documents, the names and faces of his enemies.

They would all pay. But he would do it on his own terms. Not the system's.
